Survey of infectious skin diseases and skin infestations among primary school students of Taitung County, eastern Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: There are no complete records on the prevalence of childhood skin diseases in Taiwan. We conducted a survey of infectious skin diseases and skin infestations among primary school children in Taitung County, which is located in southeastern Taiwan. METHODS: From March 1998 through October 1998, a total of 3,029 students from four rural districts (Changbin, Yanping, Lanyu, and Dawu) and one urban area (Taitung City of Taitung County) were examined by dermatologists. Treatment and instructions for disease care were given immediately after the diagnosis of dermatoses, when appropriate

Research progress on the application of nanobodies in immunity and infectious skin diseases.

In response to the limitations of traditional therapies for immune and infectious skin diseases in terms of tissue penetration, cost, and drug resistance, nanobodies derived from camelids and containing only a single heavy chain variable domain have shown significant advantages: their small molecular weight ensures excellent skin penetration ability, the extended CDR3 domain enables precise targeting of hidden epitopes, and they have excellent stability (tolerance to extreme pH, temperature, protease) and low-cost production potential. In the treatment of immune skin diseases, nanobodies effec

Artificial intelligence in assisting pathogenic microorganism diagnosis and treatment: a review of infectious skin diseases.

The skin, the largest organ of the human body, covers the body surface and serves as a crucial barrier for maintaining internal environmental stability. Various microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses reside on the skin surface, and densely arranged keratinocytes exhibit inhibitory effects on pathogenic microorganisms. The skin is an essential barrier against pathogenic microbial infections, many of which manifest as skin lesions. Therefore, the rapid diagnosis of related skin lesions is of utmost importance for early treatment and intervention of infectious diseases. With the cont

Non-infectious granulomatous diseases of the skin and their associated systemic diseases: an evidence-based update to important clinical questions.

Non-infectious granulomatous diseases of the skin are a broad group of distinct reactive inflammatory conditions that share important similarities. As a group, they are relatively difficult to diagnose and distinguish both clinically as well as histologically. Many of these disorders have significant associations with systemic diseases that impact the patient's overall prognosis. In this update, we offer a discussion of emerging concepts and controversies in this field, as presented through evidence-based answers to seven important clinical questions regarding palisading and epithelioid granul

Ultradeformable Lipid Vesicles Localize Amphotericin B in the Dermis for the Treatment of Infectious Skin Diseases.

Cutaneous fungal and parasitic diseases remain challenging to treat, as available therapies are unable to permeate the skin barrier. Thus, treatment options rely on systemic therapy, which fail to produce high local drug concentrations but can lead to significant systemic toxicity. Amphotericin B (AmB) is highly efficacious in the treatment of both fungal and parasitic diseases such as cutaneous leishmaniasis but is reserved for parenteral administration in patients with severe pathophysiology. Here, we have designed and optimized AmB-transfersomes [93.5% encapsulation efficiency, 150 nm size,

Evaluation of Potential Therapeutic Targets for Bacterial Infectious Skin Diseases: A Proteome-Wide Mendelian Randomization Study.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial infectious skin diseases are common dermatological conditions caused by various pathogenic bacteria. In recent years, their incidence has remained high due to factors such as climate change and the overuse of antibiotics, posing persistent challenges for clinical diagnosis and treatment. This study aimed to identify plasma proteins causally associated with cellulitis, erysipelas, cutaneous abscess, furuncle, and carbuncle through Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. METHODS: We analyzed genetic instruments of 4907 proteins derived from the Icelandic population together

Inflammatory and infectious skin diseases in line-field confocal optical coherence tomography: state of the art.

Line-field confocal optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT) is a new non-invasive dermatological imaging device. We summarized the available data on the use of LC-OCT for inflammatory and infectious diseases. In February 2023, we searched for all articles concerning the use of LC-OCT in inflammatory and infectious diseases. A total number of 14 papers were found and evaluated, and relevant information was extracted. LC-OCT can reveal architectural changes in the skin. Inflammatory cells are barely visible. It can highlight the level of fluid accumulation, the thickness of different epidermal lay

Formaldehyde as an alternative to antibiotics for treatment of refractory impetigo and other infectious skin diseases.

Introduction: Antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria are an increasing problem in hospitals and in the community. This has resulted in bacterial infections such as impetigo becoming difficult to treat. Alternative treatment options are needed. Areas covered: In this paper, a past study that assessed the health burden of scabies in North Queensland is described and from it, the potential for formaldehyde as an alternative antimicrobial treatment is discussed. In doing so, antibiotic resistance, impetigo, permethrin, and formaldehyde are introduced and the current understanding and limitations

Non-infectious environmental antigens as a trigger for the initiation of an autoimmune skin disease.

Pemphigus represents a group of organ specific autoimmune blistering disorders of the skin mediated by pathogenic autoantibodies with well-defined antigenic targets. While most of these diseases are sporadic, endemic forms of disease do exist. The endemic form of pemphigus foliaceus (also known as fogo selvagem, FS) exhibits epidemiological features that suggest exposure to hematophagous insect bites are a possible precipitating factor of this autoimmune disease, and provides a unique opportunity to study how environmental factors contribute to autoimmune disease development. Regression of skin lesions of Kyrle's disease with clindamycin: implications for an infectious component in the etiology of the disease.

We report our experience with the management of a 44-year-old man with manifestations of Kyrle's disease. The patient presented to us with skin lesions of two different types. The old lesions were large hyperkeratotic plaques with burrows without signs of inflammation. The newer lesions were also hyperkeratotic plaques but they clearly had signs of inflammation. The patient was successfully managed with combined surgical and medical management; removal of the large hyperkeratotic skin lesions combined with administration of clindamycin, which led to regression of the smaller skin lesions. The
