Epidemiologic features of infantile spasms in Slovenia.

PURPOSE: To determine the epidemiologic features of infantile spasms (ISs) in Slovenia. METHODS: Medical records of all children with ISs in Slovenia in the period from 1985 to 1995, based on community pediatrician referrals to four hospitals, including all pediatric EEG laboratories, were retrospectively studied. The outcome was assessed by a follow-up study in 1998. RESULTS: Forty-seven children with ISs were identified over an 11-year interval. The cumulative incidence was 2.06 per 10,000 live births. Among 29 (61.7%) children with symptomatic etiology, 14 cases had prenatal etiology [tub

Syphilis in Slovenia--on the threshold of the European Union.

The epidemiological situation of early syphilis (ES) in Slovenia is the subject matter of this report. After almost 25 years of decrease in Slovenia, ES is increasing again. The incidence of ES increased from 0.10 per 100,000 inhabitants in 1992 and 1993 to 1.82 in 1994 and 1.90 in 1995. In the years 1996-1998 there was a slight decrease at 1.25-1.45. The higher incidence of infections with ES is presumably the consequence of changed social conditions in the states of the former Eastern bloc and Yugoslavia, and of changing living conditions, and illegal prostitution in Slovenia. Hypertension control and management in Slovenia, Yugoslavia.

Data were collected from 413 questionnaires sent to general practitioners throughout Slovenia, accounting for half the physicians in this discipline. BP was measured most commonly in the sitting position (72%), mostly on the left arm. Most respondents (93%) used only one cuff size. Correction of BP readings according to the patient's arm circumference was used by 63% of the respondents. Seventy-eight percent of the general practitioners recorded phase V of the Korotkoff sounds for diastolic BP. BP was measured more than once at each examination by 55%. BP measurements were performed by nurses

Epidemiology of oral mucosal lesions in Slovenia.

Background Among the diseases of oral mucosa, malignant tumors are the most dangerous, but not the most common lesions that might appear in the oral cavity. Since most of the studies are focused on the detection of cancer in the oral cavity, we were interested in detecting the frequency of benign changes of the oral mucosa in Slovene population. Oral mucosal lesions are important pointer of oral health and quality of life, especially in elderly. The prevalence of oral mucosal lesions, together with information on the risk habits associated with oral health, such as tobacco and alcohol use, can

Epidemiology of hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin in Slovenia.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of allergy to penicillin is highly overestimated. Many patients are labeled as penicillin-allergic, which is often unconfirmed. We report an analysis of patients that were referred for evaluation of suspected penicillin allergy in 2007 and 2008. METHODS: In a 2-year period, 606 patients were referred: 460 (76%) female, average age 42 (14-85) years. The diagnostic procedure started with specific IgE (sIgE) measurement, followed by skin prick and intradermal tests with PPL, MDM, and the suspected antibiotic. If all tests were negative, a drug provocation test was per

Etiology of acute encephalitis in childhood in Slovenia.

The etiology of acute encephalitis was evaluated in a retrospective study of 170 children (98 boys and 72 girls) ages 1 month to 15 years, who were hospitalized during a 13-year period from 1979 to 1991. The etiology was confirmed or considered very probable in 68% of cases. The identified etiologic agents included Central European tick-borne encephalitis virus (28.8%), varicella-zoster virus (17.0%), herpes simplex (10.0%), rubella (2.9%), mumps (2.3%), measles virus, Chlamydia psittaci (1.1%) and some other agents found in individual cases. The etiology remained unknown in 54 children (31.7%

Incidence of congenital toxoplasmosis in the Republic of Slovenia.

Over a 12-month period, 3959 pregnant women were systematically tested with the Sabin-Feldman dye test in order to assess the incidence of congenital toxoplasmosis in Slovenia. The results suggest that this is approximately 3/1000 live births. This relatively high incidence of congenital toxoplasmosis in Slovenia may make the costing of preventive screening programmes justifiable.

Wild Carnivore Survey of Echinococcus Species in Slovenia.

Wild carnivores are definitive hosts and potential reservoirs for the tapeworm Echinococcus sp. which can cause cystic and alveolar echinococcosis. Both are considered neglected and important food-borne pandemics. This study is the first to molecularly test Slovenian wild carnivores for Echinococcus species that can cause disease in humans. Fecal samples from 210 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), 42 wolves (Canis lupus), 39 golden jackals (Canis aureus), 18 martens (Marten sp.), 2 Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), 2 European badger (Meles meles), and 1 Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) were examined for Echinoco

Prevalence of Pertactin-Deficient Bordetella pertussis Isolates, Slovenia.

In Slovenia, primary acellular pertussis vaccines (ACVs) containing pertactin (PRN) were mostly used during 1999-2016; ACVs without PRN were introduced in 2017. Among 123 Bordetella pertussis strains collected during 2002-2020, a total of 48 were PRN-deficient; 44 were collected after 2017. Changes to ACVs could increase PRN-deficient B. pertussis and infections.
