Evaluation of smartphone sound measurement applications.

This study reports on the accuracy of smartphone sound measurement applications (apps) and whether they can be appropriately employed for occupational noise measurements. A representative sample of smartphones and tablets on various platforms were acquired, more than 130 iOS apps were evaluated but only 10 apps met our selection criteria. Only 4 out of 62 Android apps were tested. The results showed two apps with mean differences of 0.07 dB (unweighted) and -0.52 dB (A-weighted) from the reference values. Two other apps had mean differences within ±2 dB. The study suggests that certain apps ma

MemScreen: A smartphone application for detection of mild cognitive impairment: A validation study: Smartphone App for MCI Detection.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Primary care is often the first point of contact for patients with cognitive complaints, making initial cognitive screening an essential step to avoid delays in diagnosing Alzheimer's disease (AD) at an early stage. We developed MemScreen, a self-administered smartphone application that assesses overall cognition and verbal memory, and evaluated its ability to detect mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in both general and clinical populations. METHODS: We conducted two validation cohort studies: (1) UK-based Whitehall II cohort study (13th wave, 2018-2022) involving a g

How parental smartphone addiction affects adolescent smartphone addiction: The effect of the parent-child relationship and parental bonding.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent smartphone addiction (ASA) has fueled concerns worldwide regarding the negative health effects. This study aimed to examine whether parental smartphone addiction (PSA) affected ASA, and evaluated the mediating role of the parent-child relationship and the moderating role of parental bonding in the effect from PSA to ASA, among a Chinese sample of parent-child pairs. METHODS: A large-scale cross-sectional survey was conducted among 10- to 15-year-old students and their parents. ASA and PSA were assessed by Mobile Phone Addiction Index (MPAI). The parent-child relationshi

In Patients' Hands: Smartphones as Medical Infrastructure.

This article examines the ways in which smartphones have emerged as essential pieces of medical infrastructure that increasingly connect patients to their health-care providers, directly interface with medical devices, and bear responsibility for care delivery. While clinical care increasingly depends on smartphones as continuously available platforms for monitoring and communication, smartphones themselves are not regulated as components of health-care infrastructure. The authors examine the historical and cultural context for the rise of smartphones into this role and consider the policy and

The Effectiveness of a Smartphone Application for Tinnitus Relief.

BACKGROUND: There has been a growing interest in the provision of smartphone- or internet-based tinnitus management. Studies have shown a positive impact of the smartphone applications on tinnitus symptoms. However, research into a relatively long-term effect of these applications on tinnitus relief as well as sound preferences has been sparse. This study explored the potential benefit of a tinnitus application in tinnitus relief over a period of six months. METHODS: Twenty-two participants with subjective tinnitus were enrolled in the study. Puretone audiometry, tinnitus pitch and loudness m

Smartphone Applications in Dentistry: A Scoping Review.

This scoping review aims to investigate the latest literature concerning the use of smartphone applications (apps) in the prevention, management, and monitoring of oral diseases. Smartphone applications are software programs that are designed to run on smartphones. Nowadays, smartphones are regularly used by people of all ages, and mobile health apps (MHAs) represent an important means of spreading information related to oral health, which is the state of the mouth and teeth, including the gums and other tissues. Several apps have been designed to promote prevention, diagnosis, and therapeutic

Smartphone apps in the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, analog tools such as nasopharyngeal swabs for PCR tests were center stage and the major prevention tactics of masking and physical distancing were a throwback to the 1918 influenza pandemic. Overall, there has been scant regard for digital tools, particularly those based on smartphone apps, which is surprising given the ubiquity of smartphones across the globe. Smartphone apps, given accessibility in the time of physical distancing, were widely used for tracking, tracing and educating the public about COVID-19. Despite limitations, such as concerns ar

Reliability and diagnostic performance of smartphone colposcopy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the interobserver and intraobserver reliability of smartphone colposcopy (SPC) versus conventional colposcopy and to determine diagnostic performance. METHODS: A smartphone back camera was used to capture cervical images before and after application of acetic acid, and after application of lugol solution. Captured images were reviewed independently by two experienced colposcopists and findings were noted as per colposcopy. Smartphone-based diagnostic performance was calculated, and kappa statistics were used for measurement of agreement between SPC and conventional colp

Opioid overdose detection using smartphones.

Early detection and rapid intervention can prevent death from opioid overdose. At high doses, opioids (particularly fentanyl) can cause rapid cessation of breathing (apnea), hypoxemic/hypercarbic respiratory failure, and death, the physiologic sequence by which people commonly succumb from unintentional opioid overdose. We present algorithms that run on smartphones and unobtrusively detect opioid overdose events and their precursors. Our proof-of- concept contactless system converts the phone into a short-range active sonar using frequency shifts to identify respiratory depression, apnea, and

Using a Mobile Smartphone to Perform Laparoscopy.

Laparoscopy has gradually expanded its use in gynecologic surgery over the last 3 decades. In this report, a new laparoscopic setup is presented using a mobile smartphone that allows for a low-cost, portable laparoscopic viewing system. The setup was created with the coupling of a rigid 0-degree, 10-mm-diameter laparoscope via a commercially available adapter with a smartphone. The light source used was also a portable and rechargeable light-emitting diode cold light source. We completed 17 diagnostic laparoscopies for different pathologies such as ectopic pregnancy, ovarian torsion, a luteal

Smartphone monitoring of in-ambulance vibration and noise.

Transferring sick premature infants between hospitals increases the risk of severe brain injury, potentially linked to the excessive exposure to noise, vibration and driving-related accelerations. One method of reducing these levels may be to travel along smoother and quieter roads at an optimal speed, however this requires mass data on the effect of roads on the environment within ambulances. An app for the Android operating system has been developed for the purpose of recording vibration, noise levels, location and speed data during ambulance journeys. Smartphone accelerometers were calibrat

iSignDB: A database for smartphone signature biometrics.

The signature has long been in use for the user verification. These signatures have user specific features that differentiate the individual for authentication. The signature verification can be offline or online. The offline verification considers only the static features of the signatures through the signature image, while the online verification considers various dynamic features associated with the signature such as pen pressure, pen tilt angle, velocity, acceleration, pen up and pen down, etc at various time stamps which are recorded using special digitizing tablets such as Wacom devices

Smartphone aiding in analysis of Hamman's sign.

Hamman's sign refers to an unusual click that occurs in synchrony with heart sounds, and is pathognomonic for left-sided pneumothorax and spontaneous mediastinum. In this case, a 17-year-old man living in a rural area used his smartphone to record an audible clicking sound emanating from his thorax. This occurred following coughing episodes secondary to an upper respiratory tract infection. Initially, this prompted a request for an echocardiogram to exclude structural cardiac anomalies; however, Hamman's sign was also considered. This facilitated the timely diagnosis of pneumothorax to be made

Smartphones, tele-ophthalmology, and VISION 2020.

Telemedicine is an emerging field in recent medical achievements with rapid development. The "smartphone" availability has increased in both developed and developing countries even among people in rural and remotes areas. Tele-based services can be used for screening ophthalmic diseases and also monitoring patients with known diseases. Electronic ophthalmologic records of the patients including captured images by smartphones from anterior and posterior segments of the eye will be evaluated by ophthalmologists, and if patients require further evaluations, they will be referred to experts in the

Assessing verbal and spatial memory via smartphone.

INTRODUCTION: Detecting subtle cognitive decline in chronic central nervous system (CNS) disease is hampered by practice effects, motor confounds, and the lack of premorbid baselines. Smartphone testing offers frequent unsupervised assessments but requires rigorous validation and internal quality control. Therefore, we aimed to develop and validate smartphone-based verbal and spatial memory tasks, derive composite digital biomarkers, and determine their utility for monitoring cognitive impairment. METHODS: In a prospective study (2018-2025) we enrolled 315 adults [41 healthy donors, 217 peopl

Opioid Detection Using Smartphone-Based Eye-Scanning.

Opioids are known to constrict pupils, and mobile phone-based self-administered eye scanning (MPSES) offers a potential method for monitoring opioid use in real-world settings. A clinical trial with 12 volunteers measured pupil size using MPSES under different light conditions (approx. 50 or approx. 500 lux) in the lab and over a week at home. Each participant made approximately 21 home tests, 12 in the lab without oxycodone and 16 in the lab after oxycodone intake. At the second visit the participants received a single dose of 20 mg oxycodone, and their pupil size was monitored hourly for 5 h
