CONTEXT: Solanaceae glycoalkaloids (SGAs) possess cardiomodulatory activity.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the potential interaction between verapamil and glycoalkaloids.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The cardioactivity of verapamil and glycoalkaloids (α-solanine and α-chaconine) was tested in adult beetle (Tenebrio molitor) myocardium in vitro using microdensitometric methods. The myocardium was treated with pure substances and mixtures of verapamil and glycoalkaloids for 9 min with saline as a control. Two experimental variants were used: simultaneous application of verapamil and glycoalkaloi

Lycium minutifolium J. Remy (Solanaceae) is commonly used as an infusion in traditional medicine to treat stomach pain, meteorism, intestinal disorders, stomach ailments, and other severe problems including prostate cancer and stomach cancer. From the EtOAc extract of L. minutifolium bark five known metabolites were isolated using chromatographic techniques. The gastroprotective effects of the EtOAc fraction and edible infusion extract of the bark were assayed on the hydrochloric acid (HCl)/EtOH induced gastric ulcer model in mice to support the traditional use of the plant. The EtOAc extract

This work aimed to boost the valorisation of Lycium intricatum Boiss. L. as a source of high added value bioproducts. For that purpose, leaves and root ethanol extracts and fractions (chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water) were prepared and evaluated for radical scavenging activity (RSA) on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radicals, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and metal chelating potential against copper and iron ions. Extracts were also appraised for in vitro inhibition of enzymes implicated on the

Knowledge about Solanaceae species naturally adapted to salinity is scarce, despite the fact that a considerable number of Solanaceae has been reported growing in saline environments. Lycium humile Phil. inhabits extreme saline soils in the Altiplano-Puna region (Central Andes, South America) and represents a promising experimental model to study salt tolerance in Solanaceae plants. Seeds, leaves and roots were collected from a saline environment (Salar del Diablo, Argentina). Seeds were scarified and 30 days after germination salt treatments were applied by adding NaCl salt pulses (up to 750

Cellular signaling is a key component of both intra- and intercellular communication, playing a crucial role in the development of higher plants as well as in their responses to environmental conditions of both abiotic and biotic origin. In recent decades, molecules such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), nitric oxide (NO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and melatonin have gained significant relevance in plant physiology and biochemistry due to their signaling functions and their interactions, forming a comprehensive cellular communication network. The Solanaceae family includes a group of horticultural cr

Self-incompatibility (SI) is a genetic mechanism to prevent self-fertilization and thereby promote outcrossing in hermaphroditic plant species through discrimination of self and nonself-pollen by pistils. In many SI systems, recognition between pollen and pistils is controlled by a single multiallelic locus (called the S-locus), in which multiple alleles (called S-alleles) are segregating. Because of the extreme level of polymorphism of the S-locus, identification of S-alleles has been a major issue in many SI studies for decades. Here, we report an RNA-seq-based method to explore allelic dive

The highly diverse Solanaceae family contains several widely studied models and crop species. Fully exploring, appreciating, and exploiting this diversity requires additional model systems. Particularly promising are orphan fruit crops in the genus Physalis, which occupy a key evolutionary position in the Solanaceae and capture understudied variation in traits such as inflorescence complexity, fruit ripening and metabolites, disease and insect resistance, self-compatibility, and most notable, the striking inflated calyx syndrome (ICS), an evolutionary novelty found across angiosperms where sep

Ethanol extract (EE) and fractions obtained from the ripe fruits of Solanum lycocarpum were examined in order to determine their phenolic composition, antioxidant capacity, antibacterial activities and cytotoxic potential. High-performance liquid chromatography coupled with DAD analysis indicated that caffeic and chlorogenic acids were the main phenolic compounds present in the EE, dichloromethane (DCM) and ethyl acetate (Ac) fractions. The antioxidant activity assessed by the scavenging ability on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical was significantly more pronounced for DCM and Ac fractions

Floral merism, the number of organs per whorl, is a conserved trait in angiosperms and has significant implications for plant reproduction. Solanum (Solanaceae) presents typically pentamerous flowers, while some species can present meristic variations. S. hexandrum is a species with typical hexamerous flowers, which represents a fixed trait in some population, while its closely related species S. sublentum exhibit the typical pentamerous flower. Importantly, both species show meristic lability, indicating that floral organ number is flexible within the group. This study investigates the develo

In the present study, the apoptosis-inducing potential of a chloroform fraction from an alcoholic extract of Vallaris solanacea aerial parts (VS) was examined using human promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 cells. We discovered a concentration and time-dependent decrease in cell growth using MTT assay. Scanning electron micrographs and fluorescence microscopy were used to observe several well-documented morphological and nuclear alterations, such as reduction in cell size, chromatin condensation, fragmentation, and the creation of cell surface blebs. A considerable rise in the Sub-G0 population was r

The methanolic extract (ME) of Solanum torvum seeds and its ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) were investigated for their antidepressant activity using behavioral (forced swim test, FST and tail suspension test, TST) and biochemical (monoamine oxidase, MAO reduced activity) tests. ME (10, 30 and 100 mg kg(-1)) and EAF (10 and 30 mg kg(-1)) dose dependently inhibited the immobility period, increased noradrenaline, serotonin and dopamine levels and inhibited the MAO enzymes in FST and TST using mice. Furthermore, we have observed antagonism between the threshold dose of ME (30 and 100 mg kg(-1)) and

The size, organization and dynamics of the evolution of plant genomes vary widely among and within evolutionary lineages. The relatively small genus Capsicum provides an excellent system for studying genome evolution because all the species are diploid and possess one of two base chromosome numbers (x = 12 or 13). Here, we report chromosome numbers, genome sizes, and numbers of 5S and 35S rDNA loci for 24 Capsicum taxa representing eight of the nine currently recognized clades and one outgroup species, Lycianthes rantonnetii. The size of the analyzed genomes ranged from 1.66 to 7.79 pg/1C (app

Aqueous suspensions of powder of sun- or freeze-dried berries of the plant Solanum aculeatum (Family Solanaceae), indigenous in Kenya, were tested for molluscicidal activity against Biomphalaria pfeifferi, Bulinus globosus and Lymnaea natalensis under laboratory conditions. One hundred or 50 mg powder L-1 of sun- or freeze-dried berries killed over 60% of the test B. pfeifferi, Bul. globosus and L. natalensis. Whereas 25 mg L-1 of the sun dried material killed less than 60% of the test snails, similar concentrations of the freeze dried molluscicide produced 60-80% mortality in the snails, unde

Mosquito-borne arboviruses, including dengue virus (DENV), Zika virus (ZIKV), and chikungunya virus (CHIKV), represent a growing global health burden, yet no specific antiviral therapies are currently available for most of these infections. This unmet need highlights the importance of identifying novel antiviral compounds from biologically relevant sources such as plant-derived natural products. In this study, a bioactivity-guided approach was applied to methanolic extracts from eight Solanaceae species to identify compounds with antiviral activity against DENV-2 in Vero cells. Five extracts s
