A brief review of the cross-cultural literature on dissociative and somatoform disorders with emphasis on US Hispanic populations has been provided. A brief description of the psychopathology of somatizing syndromes has been given as have some critiques of current nosologic systems. Cultural influences that may color the expression of somatic manifestations have been outlined. Although it is often difficult to disentangle the contribution of ethnicity from other demographic factors, and although there are plenty of methodologic shortcomings, most studies reinforce the view that culture exerts

BACKGROUND: Somatoform disorders are characterised by chronic, medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS). Although different medications are part of treatment routines for people with somatoform disorders in clinics and private practices, there exists no systematic review or meta-analysis on the efficacy and tolerability of these medications. We aimed to synthesise to improve optimal treatment decisions.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of pharmacological interventions for somatoform disorders (specifically somatisation disorder, undifferentiated somatoform disorder, somatoform autonomi

The treatment of a somatoform autonomic dysfunction with a psychogenic form of irritable bowel syndrome will be demonstrated on the example of a 16-year-old girl (Sandra) using cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). After a comprehensive psychological assessment and identification of the dysfunctional cognitive and behaviour patterns, CBT treatment methods will be described regarding the following problem areas: biased somatic attribution, selective perception of interoceptive stimuli, catastrophization as a thought pattern, avoidance behaviour and maintaining factors within the family system.

The authors studied interventions recommended by consultation-liaison (C-L) psychiatrists when they diagnosed somatoform disorder prospectively in a cohort of 4,401 consecutive inpatients referred to the C-L psychiatry service of a general teaching hospital, using standardized MICRO-CARES methodology. A DSM-III-R somatoform disorder was diagnosed in 2.9%, somatoform pain disorder in 1.4%, conversion disorder in 0.7%, hypochondriasis or somatization disorder undifferentiated/not otherwise specified in 0.6%, and somatization disorder in 0.2%. In 3.4%, somatoform disorder was considered a differe

Breath-holding spells (BHS) are commonly seen in childhood. However, there are no case reports of BHS occurring in adolescents or young adults. We report two young adult cases and discuss the pathogensis, both physically and psychologically. BHS occurred for 1-2 minutes after hyperventilation accompanied by cyanosis in both cases. Oxygen saturation was markedly decreased. Each patient had shown distress and a regressed state psychologically. These cyanotic BHS occurred after hyperventilation, and we considered that a complex interplay of hyperventilation followed by expiratory apnea increased

Patients presenting with bodily symptoms and complaints that are not explained by organic pathology or well-known pathophysiological mechanisms comprise a major challenge to any medical care system. From a perspective of psychiatric classification, such medically unexplained somatic symptoms are diagnosed as depressive and anxiety disorders on the one hand or somatoform disorders on the other. In clinical physical medicine a quite different diagnostic approach is taken to conceptualize functional somatic syndromes. Concepts of somatoform disorders are outlined, critical issues regarding existi

The authors examined 16 patients with ischemic heart disease who had psychogenic disorders with ideas of rationalization of therapy. Paranoial personality disorders (paranoial psychopathy) was diagnosed in 11 patients, pseudopsychopathy in residual schizophrenia in 5 patients. The patients had either a fanatic idea of creating new methods of self-therapy and an autoaggressive behavior (performing some dangerous manipulations, usage of non-medicamentous substances, etc.). The premorbid state of such patients was characterized by inclination to paranoial reactions and a special predisposition to

BACKGROUND: The DSM-IV somatoform disorder category was controversial and has undergone major changes in DSM-5.
AIM: To provide a critical description of DSM-5 somatic symptoms and related disorders (SSD).
METHOD: To review the new classification system for somatic symptom and related disorders (SSD) as set out in DSM-5 RESULTS: Whereas the symptoms of somatoform disorder were always considered to be medically unexplained, in DSM-5 the symptoms of somatic symptom disorder can now sometimes be explained by a medical condition. The criterion is that the individual has a maladaptive reaction to

BACKGROUND: Although body-related problems are common in patients with somatoform disorder, research focusing on how patients with somatoform disorder perceive and evaluate their body is scarce. The present study compared differences in body image between patients with somatoform disorder and respondents from a general population sample. It also examined differences within the somatoform disorder group between men and women and between the diagnostic subgroups conversion disorder, pain disorder and undifferentiated somatoform disorder.
METHODS: Data were obtained from 657 patients (67.5% fema

BACKGROUND: Clinically relevant posttraumatic stress disorders are almost always associated with physical symptoms, which are, on the one hand, classified as somatoform and, on the other hand, may also present as somatic comorbidities. The psychological, neurobiological, endocrinological and immunological correlations are only now beginning to be understood. Thereby, integration into a meaningful biopsychosocial model is still pending.
PURPOSE: The following article gives a concise summary of the knowledge concerning the relationship between body and psyche in posttraumatic stress spectrum di

This study investigated the role of somatoform dissociation in eating disorders and pathological eating behaviour, relative to the established association of eating pathology with psychological dissociation. The participants were 131 women with DSM-IV diagnoses of anorexic or bulimic disorders and 75 women who had no such disorder. Each woman completed measures of psychological and somatoform dissociation, as well as a measure of bulimic attitudes. The current presence or absence of specific bulimic behaviours was identified during the clinical interview. Levels of both forms of dissociation w

The authors assessed the validity of the recently proposed diagnosis for specific somatoform disorder in the general population. German versions of the DSM-IV adapted Composite International Diagnostic Interview were administered to a representative sample of 4075 individuals. Multivariate analyses were used to compare impairment, life satisfaction, and use of health care. A total of 803 of 4075 subjects (19.7%) with undifferentiated somatization disorder were identified, which included 51 subjects (1.3%) who met criteria for specific somatoform disorder. Subjects with specific somatoform diso
