Auditory efferents facilitate sound localization in noise in humans.

The mammalian auditory system contains descending neural pathways, some of which project onto the cochlea via the medial olivocochlear (MOC) system. The function of this efferent auditory system is not entirely clear. Behavioral studies in animals with olivocochlear (OC) lesions suggest that the MOC serves to facilitate sound localization in noise. In the current work, noise-induced OC activity (the OC reflex) and sound-localization performance in noise were measured in normal-hearing humans. Consistent with earlier studies, both measures were found to vary substantially across individuals. Im

Binaural weighting of pinna cues in human sound localization.

Human sound localization relies on binaural difference cues for sound-source azimuth and pinna-related spectral shape cues for sound elevation. Although the interaural timing and level difference cues are weighted to produce a percept of sound azimuth, much less is known about binaural mechanisms underlying elevation perception. This problem is particularly interesting for the frontal hemifield, where binaural inputs are of comparable strength. In this paper, localization experiments are described in which hearing for each ear was either normal, or spectrally disrupted by a mold fitted to the

Sound localization: value in localizing lesions of the auditory pathway.

Reports in the literature suggest that patients with otosclerosis, neural lesions such as acoustic neuroma, pontine lesions, and temporal lobe lesions may show abnormal sound localization ability. In the present experiment, 15 normal subjects and 22 patients with various auditory pathway lesions had sound localization testing using special apparatus. The results confirmed that patients with otosclerosis were unable to localize low frequency sounds. Those with temporal lobe lesions made judgments not significantly different from normal subjects. Patients with unilateral sensorineural deafness m

Olivocochlear efferent control in sound localization and experience-dependent learning.

Efferent auditory pathways have been implicated in sound localization and its plasticity. We examined the role of the olivocochlear system (OC) in horizontal sound localization by the ferret and in localization learning following unilateral earplugging. Under anesthesia, adult ferrets underwent olivocochlear bundle section at the floor of the fourth ventricle, either at the midline or laterally (left). Lesioned and control animals were trained to localize 1 s and 40 ms amplitude-roved broadband noise stimuli from one of 12 loudspeakers. Neither type of lesion affected normal localization accur

Estimating Cochlear Implant Users' Sound Localization Abilities With Two Loudspeakers.

The ability to tell where sound sources are in space is ecologically important for spatial awareness and communication in multisource environments. While hearing aids and cochlear implants (CIs) can support spatial hearing for some users, this ability is not routinely assessed clinically. The present study compared sound source localization for a 200-ms speech-shaped noise presented using real sources at 18° intervals from -54° to +54° azimuth and virtual sources that were simulated using amplitude panning with sources at -54° and +54°. Participants were 34 adult CI or electric-acoustic stimul

A robust method for heart sounds localization using lung sounds entropy.

Heart sounds are the main unavoidable interference in lung sound recording and analysis. Hence, several techniques have been developed to reduce or cancel heart sounds (HS) from lung sound records. The first step in most HS cancellation techniques is to detect the segments including HS. This paper proposes a novel method for HS localization using entropy of the lung sounds. We investigated both Shannon and Renyi entropies and the results of the method using Shannon entropy were superior. Another HS localization method based on multiresolution product of lung sounds wavelet coefficients adopted

A robust method for online heart sound localization in respiratory sound based on temporal fuzzy c-means.

This work presents a detailed framework to detect the location of heart sound within the respiratory sound based on temporal fuzzy c-means (TFCM) algorithm. In the proposed method, respiratory sound is first divided into frames and for each frame, the logarithmic energy features are calculated. Then, these features are used to classify the respiratory sound as heart sound (HS containing lung sound) and non-HS (only lung sound) by the TFCM algorithm. The TFCM is the modified version fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithm. While the FCM algorithm uses only the local information about the current frame, t

An Automated System for Sound Localization Testing in Hearing-Impaired Listeners.

Sound localization is a fundamental component of auditory perception, yet its clinical assessment remains technically demanding. Although free-field localization tests using semicircular loudspeaker arrays are considered the gold standard, many existing protocols rely on examiner-driven procedures and provide limited guidance for the functional interpretation of localization errors. An automated sound localization protocol that combines standardized stimulus delivery and response acquisition with a function-oriented interpretive framework is presented. Stimuli are presented from predefined azi

Neuromodulation by mGluRs in Sound Localization Circuits in the Auditory Brainstem.

The ability of humans and animals to localize the source of a sound in a complex acoustic environment facilitates communication and survival. Two cues are used for sound localization at horizontal planes, interaural time and level differences (ITD and ILD), which are analyzed by distinct neural circuits in the brainstem. Here, we review the studies on metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR)-mediated neuromodulation of both intrinsic and synaptic properties of brainstem neurons in these circuits. Both mammalian and avian animal models have been used, with each having their advantages that are n

Modeling underwater hearing and sound localization in the frog Xenopus laevis.

Animals that are small compared to sound wavelengths face the challenge of localizing a sound source since the main cues to sound direction-interaural time differences (ITD) and interaural level differences (ILD)-both depend on size. Remarkably, the majority of terrestrial vertebrates possess internally coupled ears (ICE) with an air-filled cavity connecting the two eardrums and producing an inherently directional middle-ear system. Underwater, longer wavelengths and faster sound-speed reduce both ITD and ILD cues. Nonetheless, many animals communicate through and localize underwater sound. He

Evolution of Sound Source Localization Circuits in the Nonmammalian Vertebrate Brainstem.

The earliest vertebrate ears likely subserved a gravistatic function for orientation in the aquatic environment. However, in addition to detecting acceleration created by the animal's own movements, the otolithic end organs that detect linear acceleration would have responded to particle movement created by external sources. The potential to identify and localize these external sources may have been a major selection force in the evolution of the early vertebrate ear and in the processing of sound in the central nervous system. The intrinsic physiological polarization of sensory hair cells on

Enhancement of interaural level differences improves sound localization in bimodal hearing.

Users of a cochlear implant together with a contralateral hearing aid-so-called bimodal listeners-have difficulties with localizing sound sources. This is mainly due to the distortion of interaural time and level difference cues (ITD and ILD), and limited ITD sensitivity. An algorithm is presented that enhances ILD cues. Horizontal plane sound-source localization performance of six bimodal listeners was evaluated in (1) a real sound field with their clinical devices, (2) in a virtual sound field, under direct computer control, and (3) in a virtual sound field with ILD enhancement. The results

Effects on sound localization of configuration and type of hearing impairment.

Localization ability of 87 bilaterally hearing-impaired listeners was tested in the horizontal and vertical planes, frontally and laterally. In those with sensorineural hearing loss, it was found that deficits in localization accuracy in different regions of auditory space could be related to different configurations of hearing loss. For example, there were associations between vertical plane discrimination and high-frequency sensitivity; and front-rear discrimination and mid-to-high-frequency sensitivity. These results agree with theoretical expectations, while the outcome overall contrasts w

Prior Visual Experience Modulates Learning of Sound Localization Among Blind Individuals.

Cross-modal learning requires the use of information from different sensory modalities. This study investigated how the prior visual experience of late blind individuals could modulate neural processes associated with learning of sound localization. Learning was realized by standardized training on sound localization processing, and experience was investigated by comparing brain activations elicited from a sound localization task in individuals with (late blind, LB) and without (early blind, EB) prior visual experience. After the training, EB showed decreased activation in the precuneus, which

Real-Time Sound Source Localization Based on the Ground-Reflection Compensation Algorithm.

Sound source localization based on microphone arrays has attracted extensive research interest in the fields of speech communication, detection and tracking. However, conventional near-field beamforming typically assumes free-field propagation and ignores coherent ground reflections, which bias phase estimates at floor-mounted arrays and degrade localization accuracy. To address this, the total Green's function is reformulated by embedding the image-source reflected path directly into the beamforming propagation model. Unlike conventional approaches that assume free-field propagation, this for

Establishing standardized conditions for clinically available sound-localization tests: A multicenter approach.

Sound localization is essential for auditory spatial awareness. The process relies on interaural differences in timing and level, and spectral cues. This study aimed to standardize sound-localization testing conditions across facilities in Japan, analyze the impact of early reflected sounds on localization accuracy, and compare outcomes between individuals with normal hearing and those with unilateral hearing loss. This study included 77 participants with normal hearing and 45 individuals with unilateral hearing loss, at 11 facilities. Sound-localization tests were conducted using nine loudspe

Ear-specific neuroplasticity for sound localization in individuals with single-sided deafness.

Studies on cortical plasticity in individuals with single-sided deafness (SSD) show increased activity in the auditory cortex ipsilateral to the hearing ear, impacting auditory localization and rehabilitation outcomes. However, the direct relationship between neuroplastic changes and binaural processing in SSD remains unclear, as does the specificity of plasticity to the affected ear. In this study, two groups of SSD patients (left [Lt] SSD, 17; right [Rt] SSD, 18) of postlingual onset and 13 normal-hearing controls (NC) underwent fMRI during an auditory localization task. The NC group was als
