Intestinal obstruction associated with chronic peritonitis caused by Sphingomonas paucimobilis.

We describe a very rare case of chronic peritonitis with secondary adhesive intestinal obstruction caused by Sphingomonas paucimobilis in a healthy 28-year-old Chinese man. This bacillus has not been described as a cause of spontaneous peritonitis in healthy people. It was an asymptomatic, generalized, and slow-growing peritonitis causing peritoneal adherens and at the end intestinal occlusion that needed surgical adhesiolysis.

A pathway for complete mineralization of the ambergris constituent (-)-Ambrox in Sphingomonas sp.

UNLABELLED: (-)-Ambrox, the smelling principle in ambergris of sperm whales, is a saturated polycyclic terpenoid ether with multiple tertiary and quaternary centers. Despite these structural features, it is readily biodegradable and thus represents an interesting case to understand the degradation pathway of a complex, saturated polycyclic terpene. We isolated two Sphingomonas spp. strains from activated sewage sludge capable of rapidly mineralizing (-)-Ambrox. The structures of seven isolated metabolites were determined by 2D-NMR, and further metabolite structures were proposed based on their

Unveiling a Hidden Pathogen: The Role of Sphingomonas paucimobilis Beyond the Hospital Walls.

Dental abscesses or cavities can lead to the formation of cavitary lung lesions through aspiration or by initially entering the bloodstream. The most common causative organisms are typically gram-negative or anaerobic species. Sphingomonas paucimobilis is a widespread organism, but it is generally regarded as an uncommon pathogen, primarily linked to nosocomial infections or community-acquired infections. We report a potential novel link between Sphingomonas paucimobilis and dental abscesses. Research on this particular bacterium is currently limited, leaving gaps in our understanding of its c

Isolation and characterisation of a Sphingomonas strain able to degrade the fungicide ortho-phenylphenol.

BACKGROUND: Ortho-phenylphenol (OPP) is a fungicide used in fruit packaging plants for the control of fungal infestations during storage. Its application leads to the production of large wastewater volumes which according to the European legislation should be treated on site. In spite of this, no efficient treatment systems are currently available, and the development of biological systems based on tailored-made pesticide-degrading inocula for the treatment of these wastewaters is an appealing solution. RESULTS: Enrichment cultures from a soil collected from a wastewater disposal site resulte

In silico detection of virulence gene homologues in the human pathogen sphingomonas spp.

There is an ongoing debate about the clinical significance of Sphingomonas paucimobilis as a virulent bacterial pathogen. In the present study, we investigated the presence of different virulence factors and genes in Sphingomonas bacteria. We utilized phylogenetic, comparative genomics and bioinformatics analysis to investigate the potentiality of Sphingomonas bacteria as virulent pathogenic bacteria. The 16S ribosomal RNA gene (16S rDNA) phylogenetic tree showed that the closest bacterial taxon to Sphingomonas is Brucella with a bootstrap value of 87 followed by Helicobacter, Campylobacter, P

Oxidation of Methyl-Substituted Naphthalenes: Pathways in a Versatile Sphingomonas paucimobilis Strain.

Aromatic compounds with alkyl substituents are abundant in fossil fuels. These compounds become important environmental sources of soluble toxic products, developmental inhibitors, etc. principally through biological activities. To assess the effect of methyl substitution on the completeness of mineralization and accumulation of pathway products, an isolate from a phenanthrene enrichment culture, Sphingomonas paucimobilis 2322, was used. Washed cell suspensions containing cells grown on 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene in mineral medium were incubated with various mono-, di-, and trimethylnaphthalene i

Identification and functional analysis of the genes for naphthalenesulfonate catabolism by Sphingomonas xenophaga BN6.

Sphingomonas xenophaga BN6 degrades various (substituted) naphthalenesulfonates to the corresponding (substituted) salicylates. A gene cluster was identified on the plasmid pBN6 which coded for several enzymes participating in the degradative pathway for naphthalenesulfonates. A DNA fragment of 16 915 bp was sequenced which contained 17 ORFs. The genes encoding the 1,2-dihydroxynaphthalene dioxygenase, 2-hydroxychromene-2-carboxylate isomerase, and 2'-hydroxybenzalpyruvate aldolase of the naphthalenesulfonate pathway were identified on the DNA fragment and the encoded proteins heterologously e

Surfactant mediated enhanced biodegradation of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers by Sphingomonas sp. NM05.

Environmental biodegradation of several chlorinated pesticides is limited by their low solubility and sorption to soil surfaces. To mitigate this problem we quantified the effect of three biosurfactant viz., rhamnolipid, sophorolipid and trehalose-containing lipid on the dissolution, bioavailability, and biodegradation of HCH-isomers in liquid culture and in contaminated soil. The effect of biosurfactants was evaluated through the critical micelle concentration (CMC) value as determined for each isomer. The surfactant increased the solubilization of HCH isomers by 3-9 folds with rhamnolipid an

Sphingomonas paucimobilis BPSI-3 mutant AN2 produces a red catabolite during biphenyl degradation.

The biphenyl degradation pathway of Sphingomonas paucimobilis BPSI-3 was investigated using a degradation-deficient mutant generated by 1-methyl-3-nitro-1-nitrosoguanidine (NTG) mutagenesis. The mutant, designated AN2, was confirmed as originating from BPSI-3 through the use of ERIC (Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus) PCR and by detection of the diagnostic pigment, nostoxanthin, in cellular methanol extracts. Mutant AN2 produced a yellow followed by red extracellular substance when grown in the presence of biphenyl. In the presence of 2,3-dihydroxybiphenyl, yellow followed by red

Biodegradation of diphenyl ether and its monohalogenated derivatives by Sphingomonas sp. strain SS3.

The bacterium Sphingomonas sp. strain SS3, which utilizes diphenyl ether and its 4-fluoro, 4-chloro, and (to a considerably lesser extent) 4-bromo derivatives as sole sources of carbon and energy, was enriched from soil samples of an industrial waste deposit. The bacterium showed cometabolic activities toward all other isomeric monohalogenated diphenyl ethers. During diphenyl ether degradation in batch culture experiments, phenol and catechol were produced as intermediates which were then channeled into the 3-oxoadipate pathway. The initial step in the degradation follows the recently discover
