Pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) is a rare condition, often difficult to diagnose and associated with poor prognosis at advanced stages. Lung parenchymal abnormalities are indirect evidence of PVS and can manifest as multifocal opacities, nodular lesions, unilateral effusions, and interstitial septal thickening. These can lead to erroneous diagnoses of airway disease, pneumonia, malignancies or interstitial lung disease. This review summarizes the current literature about the approach to, evaluation and management of these patients. Our case report demonstrates that PVS is an under-recognized com

UNLABELLED: The presence of recurrent respiratory symptoms and right heart enlargement in an ex-premature infant is suggestive of chronic lung disease. Pulmonary vein stenosis is a rare, progressive disorder that produces similar symptoms and signs. A case is reported in which pulmonary vein stenosis was revealed by Doppler echocardiography, and this application is recommended in similar cases. Pulmonary vein stenosis is an extremely rare and progressive disorder, which, if left untreated, is usually fatal. The possibility of this diagnosis may not be considered during clinical examination and

A six-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair presented with a one-month history of respiratory distress. Echocardiography showed a large lesion adjacent to the left atrium that was compressing the pulmonary vein. Peak pulmonary venous flow velocity was high (1.5 m/sec). The diagnosis was pulmonary vein stenosis due to mass compression. Fine-needle biopsy cytology of the lung mass led to a direct diagnosis of lymphoma. After two weeks of treatment with L-Asparaginase and prednisolone, a reduction in the mass adjacent to the left atrium and slower peak pulmonary venous flow velocity (0.9 m/se

BACKGROUND: Congenital pulmonary vein stenosis is a uniformly fatal disease when left untreated. Transcatheter techniques (for example, balloon dilation and stent placement) have proved to be only temporizing measures, and previous surgical attempts at treatment of this entity have provided little improvement and few survivors.
METHODS: Over the last 4 years, 6 patients with congenital pulmonary vein stenosis have been treated at our institution, 3 of whom underwent bilateral sequential lung transplantation.
RESULTS: The 3 patients who underwent bilateral lung transplantation are alive and w

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the anatomical or procedural factors associated with severe pulmonary vein (PV) stenosis after cryoballoon PV isolation.
BACKGROUND: PV stenosis is a complication associated with cryoballoon ablation.
METHODS: The study included 170 consecutive patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation who underwent cryoballoon ablation. In addition to factors generally considered to be related to the occurrence of PV stenosis (PV size, cryoballoon application number and time, and minimum freezing temperature), we evaluated the following 4 factors: 1) depth of balloon posit

Pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) is still a frustrating disease with extremely high mortality, especially in children with multiple severe PVS. Hybrid pulmonary vein stenting (HPVS) is a rescue treatment for recurrent and malignant PVS. The aim of this study is to share our successful experience with intraoperative HPVS for recurrent PVS after total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) repair in infant. Six patients were identified between 2013 and January 2018, who were diagnosed with recurrent PVS and underwent HPVS in the operating room. The mean age at the time of the HPVS was 10.3 ±

OBJECTIVES: Pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) is a relentless disease with a poor prognosis. Although surgical repair can effectively treat "downstream" (near left atrial junction) PVS, residual "upstream" (deep in lung parenchyma) PVS commonly dictates long-term survival. Our initial studies revealed an association between PVS and transforming growth factor-β signaling, which led us to investigate the effect of losartan on upstream pulmonary vein vasculopathy in a piglet model of PVS.
METHODS: Neonatal Yorkshire piglets underwent sham surgical banding (sham, n = 6), staged bilateral pulmonary ve

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) after pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is a rare but severe complication. Its severity depends on the cause, number of stenosed veins, and symptoms. For symptomatic patients, angioplasty is the first choice, while surgery is not recommended due to its high invasiveness.
CASE SUMMARY: Patient 1: A 60-year-old male developed symptomatic left superior and inferior PVS after two procedures of PVI using radiofrequency energy. Eight-millimetre stent in left-superior and 7-mm stent in left-inferior PV were placed. Patient 2: A 64-year-old male underwent PVI us

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 49-year-old woman was admitted because of hemoptysis for four months. Several bronchoscopies and thoracic computed tomographies at other hospitals had not revealed the cause of the sustained hemoptysis. Eight months before admission she had undergone pulmonary vein ablation (PVA) for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. After the PVA she had initially received oral anticoagulation, but this had been stopped because of the hemoptysis. Physical examination at admission to our hospital was unremarkable except for moderate obesity and arterial hypertension

Pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) is a rare but potentially serious complication of catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF), often presenting with non-specific respiratory symptoms and initially misdiagnosed. Early recognition is crucial to reduce the risks of progressive pulmonary hypertension, infarction, and long-term morbidity. We report a 65-year-old woman who presented with progressive dyspnoea on exertion, marked reduced exercise tolerance, lethargy, chest pain , and new onset haemoptysis. These symptoms began five months following an ablation procedure for symptomatic AF. Initial ev

Systemic sirolimus (SS) is an mTOR inhibitor used in the management of pediatric intraluminal pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS). SS initiation, monitoring, including patient compliance with toxicity surveillance, and potential adverse events (AE) in PVS patients are under reported. A single-center retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients who were initiated on SS for PVS from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2024 was performed. Fifty patients with a median age of 7 months (range 2-165) received SS for PVS (median number of stenotic veins; n = 3 (1-4)) for a median duration of 18 months (1-

Pulmonary vein stenosis is a rare and frequently lethal childhood disease. There are few known genetic associations, and the pathophysiology is not well known. Current treatments include surgery, interventional cardiac catheterization, and more recently, medications targeting cell proliferation, which are not uniformly effective. We present a patient with PVS and a PIK3CA mutation, who demonstrated a good response to the targeted inhibitor, alpelisib.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary vein stenosis (PVST) can occur after first-generation cryoballoon ablation. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence, severity, and characteristics of PVST after second-generation cryoballoon ablation.
METHODS: In total, 103 patients underwent PV isolation of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation using second-generation cryoballoons with a single big-balloon 3-minute freeze technique. Cardiac enhanced multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) was performed both before and a median of 6.0 (4.0-8.0) months after the procedure in all. PVST was classified as follows: minimal (<25%

Congenital pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) is a rare entity with limited outcome literature. Multiple interventional approaches have evolved including surgical and catheterization techniques. Our objective is to report our center experience and to compare short-term and mid-term outcomes among these therapeutic modalities. Retrospective study on 23 patients (n = 23) with PVS that required intervention over the last 13 years (2000-2013). Patients were divided into three groups based on type of initial intervention. Of these, 10 (43.5%) had balloon angioplasty, 3 (13.0 %) had surgical dilation, an

Pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) post radiofrequency ablation for chronic atrial fibrillation poses a diagnostic challenge for the clinician. PVS presents with nonspecific symptoms, signs and radiographic features, and may be associated with significant pulmonary vascular involvement. Interestingly, others have described variation of the pulmonary artery wedge pressure between sites of the lung as a clue to pulmonary veno-occlusive disorders. We report, to the best of our knowledge, the first case that describes the regional loss of V waves while recording the mean pulmonary artery wedge pressure
