Effects of Proton Pump Inhibitors on the Small Bowel and Stool Microbiomes.

BACKGROUND: Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use is extremely common. PPIs have been suggested to affect the gut microbiome, and increase risks of Clostridium difficile infection and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). However, existing data are based on stool analyses and PPIs act on the foregut. AIMS: To compare the duodenal and stool microbiomes in PPI and non-PPI users. METHODS: Consecutive subjects presenting for upper endoscopy without colonoscopy were recruited. Current antibiotic users were excluded. Subjects taking PPI were age- and gender-matched 1:2 to non-PPI controls. Subje

Mobile Genetic Elements in Streptococci.

Streptococci are a group of Gram-positive bacteria belonging to the family Streptococcaceae, which are responsible of multiple diseases. Some of these species can cause invasive infection that may result in life-threatening illness. Moreover, antibiotic-resistant bacteria are considerably increasing, thus imposing a global consideration. One of the main causes of this resistance is the horizontal gene transfer (HGT), associated to gene transfer agents including transposons, integrons, plasmids and bacteriophages. These agents, which are called mobile genetic elements (MGEs), encode proteins ab

Geographical spread of bacterial and fungal diseases of crustaceans.

The author discusses the way in which bacterial and fungal diseases of crustaceans can be and have been transmitted via commercial movements of stocks. Two classic examples of such diseases are presented, namely gaffkaemia (a bacterial disease of marine lobsters) and crayfish plague (a fungal disease of freshwater crayfish). In both cases, there is ample evidence that much of the disease spread can be linked to the commercial movement of infected animals caught from infected wild stocks and transported over large distances for wholesale and retail. In the case of crayfish plague, much of the r

Breed-specific differences of gut microbiota and metabolomic insights into fat deposition and meat quality in Chinese Songliao Black Pig and Large White × Landrace Pig Breeds.

BACKGROUND: Gut microbiota ferment non-digestible substances to produce metabolites that accumulate in muscle and influence host metabolism. However, the regulatory mechanisms connecting gut microbiota, metabolites, and fat deposition across pig breeds remain unclear. This study explores the gut-muscle axis regulating fat deposition and meat quality in Chinese Songliao Black Pig (SBP) and Large White × Landrace Pigs (LWLDP). Digesta samples from the ileum, cecum, and rectum of both breeds were analyzed using 16 S rRNA sequencing for microbiome profiling and ultra-high-performance liquid chroma

An Update on Novel Taxa and Revised Taxonomic Status of Bacteria Isolated from Domestic Animals Described in 2018 to 2021.

Novel bacterial taxonomy and nomenclature revisions can have significant impacts on clinical practice, disease epidemiology, and veterinary microbiology laboratory operations. Expansion of research on the microbiota of humans, animals, and insects has significant potential impacts on the taxonomy of organisms of clinical interest. Implications of taxonomic changes may be especially important when considering zoonotic diseases. Here, we address novel taxonomy and nomenclature revisions of veterinary significance. Noteworthy discussion centers around descriptions of novel mastitis pathogens in S

Comparison of microbiomes in ulcerative and normal mucosa of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS)-affected patients.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common form of oral ulcerative disease, whose cause is still unknown. Researchers have found the association of many factors with the occurrence of RAS, and proposed oral bacterial infection could be a cause for this disease. METHODS: To investigate whether the occurrence of RAS is associated with oral bacterial infection, we performed high throughput sequencing analysis of bacterial samples collected from the normal oral mucosa and aphthous ulcers of 24 patients. RESULTS: Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Bacteriodetes were the most a

Teat skin normal flora and colonization with mastitis pathogen inhibitors.

Isolates of bacteria from normal teats were used to attempt colonization of teats of dry cows or neonatal calves. Isolates for inoculation were chosen on the basis of ability to inhibit mastitis pathogens in vitro, with the ultimate goal of in vivo inhibition of mastitis pathogens at the teat surface. Three bacterial normal flora isolates (Corynebacterium xerosis, Bacillus sp. and Aerococcus viridans) persisted less than 10 days on the teats of dry cows. The fourth isolate, Staphylococcus hominis 1, was studied in greatest detail because studies characterizing the normal teat flora showed stap

Lactic acid bacteria and the human gastrointestinal tract.

OBJECTIVE: This review summarises the effects of lactic acid bacteria on lactose malabsorption, bacterial/viral or antibiotic associated diarrhoea, and describes the impact of lactic acid bacteria on cancer and the fermentative products in the colon. RESULTS: Eight studies (including 78 patients) demonstrated that lactase deficient subjects absorbed lactose in yogurt better than lactose in milk, while two studies (25 patients) did not support this. Two studies (22 patients) showed that unfermented acidophilus milk was absorbed better than milk, while six studies (68 patients) found no signifi

The bacteriology of skin cysts.

Thirty-nine clinically uninflamed cysts of the three most common varieties, epidermoid cysts, trichilemmal cysts and steatocystoma multiplex were removed under sterile conditions and the contents cultured under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Seventy-three percent of epidermoid cysts grew significant numbers of organisms whereas none of the trichilemmal cysts did so. The organisms found were the common skin commensals, Staphylococcus epidermidis biotype I, anaerobic Gram positive cocci of the Gaffya type and Corynebacterium acnes Type I. This indicates that cysts which clinically have a punc

Development of the Tonsil Microbiome in Pigs and Effects of Stress on the Microbiome.

Tonsils, lympho-epithelial tissues located at the junction of the oropharynx and nasopharynx, play a key role in surveillance, colonization, and persistence of inhaled and ingested pathogens. In pigs, the tonsils are a reservoir for numerous bacteria and viruses, including host-specific pathogens and potential zoonotic pathogens as well as commensal organisms. However, there are no in depth studies of the development of the tonsillar microbiome in pigs, or any mammal, over time. The goal of this study was to follow the development of the tonsil microbiome in healthy pigs from birth to market w

Application of PathoChip to urine-derived nucleic acids for broad microbial profiling in men with suspected prostate cancer: setup of a methodological workflow and pilot feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Urine-based liquid biopsy is an attractive non-invasive source of prostate cancer (PCa) biomarkers, but urinary microbiome studies have mainly relied on 16S rRNA sequencing or shotgun metagenomics. This pilot study optimized and evaluated a practical workflow using PathoChip - a broad-spectrum microarray designed to detect bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic signatures - for microbial profiling of urine sediments from men with suspected PCa, an application not previously established. METHODS: First-morning urine was collected without prostatic massage from 35 men scheduled for

Airborne bacteria in an urban environment.

Samples were taken at random intervals over a 2-year period from urban air and tested for viable bacteria. The number of bacteria in each sample was determined, and each organism isolated was identified by its morphological and biochemical characteristics. The number of bacteria found ranged from 0.013 to 1.88 organisms per liter of air sampled. Representatives of 19 different genera were found in 21 samples. The most frequently isolated organisms and their percent of occurence were Micrococcus (41%), Staphylococcus (11%), and Aerococcus (8%). The bacteria isolated were correlated with various

In vitro antimicrobial susceptibility of Aerococcus urinae to 14 antibiotics, and time-kill curves for penicillin, gentamicin and vancomycin.

Aerococcus urinae is a newcomer in clinical and microbiological practice, causing urinary tract infections, bacteraemia/septicaemia and/or endocarditis. This study presents for the first time an evaluation of the activity of a representative panel of antibiotics against a large number of A. urinae isolates. The in vitro susceptibilities (MICs) of 56 isolates of A. urinae to 14 antibiotics were determined by agar dilution. In general, A. urinae isolates showed little inter-isolate variability, and had low MICs of penicillin, amoxicillin, piperacillin, cefepime, vancomycin and rifampicin. High-l

Host genetics and gut microbiota jointly regulate blood biochemical indicators in chickens.

Blood biochemical indicators play a crucial role in assessing an individual's overall health status and metabolic function. In this study, we measured five blood biochemical indicators, including total cholesterol (CHOL), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-CH), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-CH), and blood glucose (BG), as well as 19 growth traits of 206 male chickens. By integrating host whole-genome information and 16S rRNA sequencing of the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, and feces microbiota, we assessed the contributions of host genetics and gut micro

The combined effects of ultrasound and plasma-activated water on silkworm pupae:Physicochemical properties, microbiological diversity and ultrastructure.

A novel technique was proposed for processing silkworm pupae by combining plasma- activated water (PAW) with ultrasound (US). The microbial diversity and quality characteristics of the silkworm pupae were also evaluated. The results of the microbial diversity analysis indicated that PAW combined with US treatment significantly reduced the relative abundance of Streptococcaceae, Leuconostocaceae, and Acetobacteraceae from 32%, 18% and 16% to 27%, 11% and 11%, respectively. Microstructural analysis demonstrated that the collapse of the internal structure of chitin in silkworm pupae facilitated t

Individuals at risk for rheumatoid arthritis harbor differential intestinal bacteriophage communities with distinct metabolic potential.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease characterized in seropositive individuals by the presence of anti-cyclic citrullinated protein (CCP) antibodies. RA is linked to the intestinal microbiota, yet the association of microbes with CCP serology and their contribution to RA is unclear. We describe intestinal phage communities of individuals at risk for developing RA, with or without anti-CCP antibodies, whose first-degree relatives have been diagnosed with RA. We show that at-risk individuals harbor intestinal phage compositions that diverge based on CCP serology, are dominated by S

Post-streptococcal acute glomerulonephritis complicated by gouty arthritis: a case report.

Gouty arthritis is uncommon in childhood and adolescence. On the other hand, there has been no report of cases with development of gouty arthritis with post-streptococcal acute glomerulonephritis (PSAGN) in pediatric patients. Here we report the case of a mildly obese 12-year-old boy with PSAGN complicated by gouty arthritis of the left first metatarsophalangeal joint. On follow-up, it was confirmed that as serum C3 level returned to normal, urinary excretion of uric acid increased and serum uric acid level decreased, thereby resolving the burning pain of the left big toe. In this case, not on
