Taurine, a conditionally essential amino acid with unique sulfur-containing groups, has many fundamental physiologic processes, including osmoregulation and bile acid conjugation. Atherosclerosis (AS) can lead to numerous severe vascular adverse events, such as stroke, coronary artery disease, and myocardial infarction, posing a significant threat to human health. Taurine plays a role in multiple targets associated with the development of AS. It regulates lipid metabolism, reduces platelet activation and aggregation, and suppresses uncontrolled proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells. Ad

Bone metabolism is a dynamic process involving remodeling and rebuilding bone tissue. Important participants in this process include osteoblasts and osteoclasts, which may promote bone formation and bone resorption, respectively. Cumulative evidence suggests that taurine, a sulfur-containing nonessential amino acid, can regulate bone formation, bone resorption, and bone immunity through anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in bone metabolic diseases. However, the potential mechanisms by which taurine regulates bone metabolism remain unclear. This review focuses on the potential role of

Taurine is widely distributed at high concentrations in mammalian tissues, and it plays an important role in a wide range of biological effects including modulation of cardiovascular functions. This review summarizes the role of taurine in vascular tone and blood pressure modulation based on experimental and human studies. It is well established that supplementation of taurine prevents development of hypertension in several animal models and p.o. taurine administration reduces blood pressure in hypertensive patients. Both central and peripheral actions of taurine may be involved in its hypoten

The physiological roles of taurine, a product of cysteine degradation and one of the most abundant amino acids in the body, remain elusive. Taurine deficiency leads to heart dysfunction, brain development abnormalities, retinal degradation, and other pathologies. The taurine synthetic pathway is proposed to be incomplete in astrocytes and neurons, and metabolic cooperation between these cell types is reportedly needed to complete the pathway. In this study, we analyzed taurine synthesis capability as reported by incorporation of radioactivity from [(35)S]cysteine into taurine, in primary murin

Some newer more promising therapies for dogs with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) are taurine and carnitine. Deficiencies of these nutrients have been shown to cause DCM in dogs, and some breeds of dogs have shown dramatic improvement in myocardial function after supplementation with one or both nutrients. Although most dogs diagnosed with DCM do not have a documented taurine or carnitine deficiency, they may still be benefit from supplementation. These nutrients are safe to administer to dogs. For some owners, the high cost of carnitine is the only deterrent to giving their dogs supplements of b

In view of contrary reports in the literature on anomalies of taurine concentration in the blood of retinitis pigmentosa patients, taurine clearance has been determined in 19 patients and 17 controls. No significant difference has been found between the average values of the two populations. The taurine content in cataractous crystalline lenses of retinitis pigmentosa patients has been found higher than the taurine content in lenses with senile cataract, but the same behaviour was also shown by five selected proteogenic amino acids. The results are discussed together with related literature da

The function of taurine in mammalian osmoregulation was studied in the Brattleboro rat with hereditary hypothalamic diabetes insipidus (DI). DI rats are chronically dehydrated because of their inability to synthesize vasopressin. One day of water deprivation did not affect the water balance in rats with normal vasopressin synthesis, whereas DI rats were markedly dehydrated and lost considerably body weight. Taurine content and 3H-taurine accumulation by platelets were significantly higher in DI rats, with a further increase after one day of water deprivation. In DI rats, water deprivation also

Taurine (2-aminoethylsulphonic acid), a non-protein amino acid, is present in most animal tissues. Its highest concentrations are found in skeletal muscles, heart, brain, and retina. Although this compound can be synthesized from other sulfonic amino acids such as methionine and cysteine, the endogenous production is insufficient for the human organism, so taurine has to be delivered with food. Animal products such as fish, meat, and milk are good sources of taurine. Taurine exhibits antioxidative properties, regulates intracellular Ca2+ concentration, acts as a neuromediator and neuromodulato

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive disorder that affects its patients' life quality due to the loss of dopaminergic (DAergic) neurons of substantia nigra (SN), and development of Lewy bodies (LBs) mediated by accumulation of alpha-synuclein (α-Syn) in the brain, causing progressive neuronal loss, and locomotor impairments such as tremor, rigidity, and postural instability. Various pathological factors impact PD progression, such as oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and kinase activity alterations. This study aimed to evaluate the neuroprotective impacts of Taurine and Taurine nanopar

BACKGROUND: Taurine has shown promise as a therapeutic agent for diabetic disorders, and circulating taurine concentration has consistently been lower in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, it is unclear whether higher habitual taurine intake or plasma taurine concentration is associated with a lower risk of developing T2D.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate associations of habitual taurine intake, its food source, and plasma taurine concentration with risk of incident T2D.
METHODS: This prospective study included 23,456 individuals without diabetes from the Chinese Tianjin Chronic Low-

Taurine (TAU), a sulfur-containing amino acid that synthesized from methionine and cystine, plays vital roles in maintenance of redox balance. The effect of substitution of TAU for methionine was evaluated in vivo and in vitro. The effects of replacing methionine with TAU and additional TAU supplementation on the performance and antioxidant capacity of laying hens were evaluated. The in vitro cultured chicken primary hepatocytes and intestinal epithelial cells were further employed. Two hubdred eighty-eight 40-wk-old Isa brown laying hens were divided into 4 groups and subjected one to the fol

95% of the Na(+)-independent influx of taurine in flounder erythrocytes at normal osmolality (330 mosmol kg-1) and 0.30 mmol l-1 taurine was mediated by a saturable system (Vmax = 0.689 nmol g-1 dry mass min-1; Km = 0.47 mmol l-1). The influx was inhibited by taurine analogues, but was not significantly affected by reduced osmolality. This saturable influx of taurine was probably mediated by the so-called Na(+)-dependent influx system for taurine operating in the 0 Na+: 1 taurine mode. The remaining 5% of the Na(+)-independent influx was mediated by a diffusional pathway (Kd = 0.050 microliter

Taurine (TAU) is a free amino acid abundant in the human body. Various physiological roles have been attributed to TAU. At the subcellular level, mitochondria are the primary targets for TAU function. Meanwhile, it has been found that TAU depletion is associated with severe pathologies. Cholestasis is a severe clinical complication that can progress to liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatic failure. Bile duct ligation (BDL) is a reliable model for assessing cholestasis/cirrhosis and related complications. The current study was designed to investigate the effects of cholestasis/cirrhosis on tis

Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is a widely used hepatotoxin for the studies of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, and taurine has function to abate liver fibrosis induced by CCl4. But the interacting mechanisms between taurine and CCl4 in liver are still largely unknown. These made us to hypothesize that CCl4 may induce liver fibrosis by affecting the expressions of taurine biosynthetic enzymes and taurine synthesis. We thus assayed the expressions of hepatic cysteine dioxygenase (CDO), cysteine sulfonate acid decarboxylase (CSAD) and taurine transporter (TauT) in the progression of mouse liver fibros

Taurine, as a free amino acid, is found at high levels in many tissues including brain, heart and skeletal muscle and is known to demonstrate neuroprotective effects in a range of disease conditions including stroke and neurodegenerative disease. Using in vitro culture systems we have demonstrated that taurine can elicit protection against endoplasmic reticulum stress (ER stress) from glutamate excitotoxicity or from excessive reactive oxygen species in PC12 cells or rat neuronal cultures. In our current investigation we hypothesized that taurine treatment after stroke in the rat middle cerebr

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the supporting structures of the teeth. It is closely associated with oxidative stress and inflammation. Taurine, a semi-essential amino acid recognized for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, has not been extensively investigated in the context of periodontitis. This pilot study sought to evaluate the levels of taurine and inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of individuals with p

Taurine is an abundant β-amino acid that concentrates in the mitochondria, where it participates in the conjugation of tRNAs for leucine, lysine, glutamate and glutamine. The formation of 5-taurinomethyluridine-tRNA strengthens the interaction of the anticodon with the codon, thereby promoting the decoding of several codons, including those for AAG, UUG, CAG and GAG. By preventing these series of events, taurine deficiency appears to diminish the formation of 5-taurinomethyluridine and causes inefficient decoding for the mitochondrial codons of leucine, lysine, glutamate and glutamine. The res

Clinical and preclinical studies have shown that diabetic individuals present more depressive behaviors than non-diabetic individuals. Taurine, one of the most abundant free amino acids in the central nervous system, modulates a variety of biological functions and acts as an agonist at GABAA receptors. Our objective was to assess the antidepressant effect of taurine in diabetic rats. Additionally, we studied the effect of taurine on weight gain, water and food intake, and blood glucose levels in diabetic and non-diabetic rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into control (CTR) and streptozotocin
