Tensile Strength of Nerve Bridging Models Using Collagen Nerve Conduits.

BACKGROUND: In the treatment of peripheral nerve injuries with nerve defects, second-generation collagen-based conduits, such as Renerve® (Nipro, Osaka, Japan), have shown the potential for promoting nerve regeneration. However, there is concern related to the weak material properties. No previous studies have addressed the strength of the bridging model using collagen conduits. This study aimed to investigate the tensile strength and failure patterns in nerve defect models bridged with Renerve® conduits through biomechanical research. METHODS: Using fresh chicken sciatic nerves, we examined

Layer-Specific Tensile Strength of the Human Aorta: Segmental Variations.

Knowledge of the failure properties of the aorta is essential to understand the mechanisms of dissection and rupture. Limited information is, however, available in humans or experimental animals about the layer-specific properties and their segmental variations have not been determined. In this paper, the failure properties of the intima, media, and adventitia were studied in nine consecutive aortic segments and two principal directions. Detailed biomechanical tests were performed with a tensile-testing device on 756 layer strips, harvested from fourteen cadaveric subjects aged 21-82 years. In

Investigations into the Influence of Temperature on the Tensile Shear Strength of Various Adhesives.

The temperature resistance of glued timber, which is crucial for glued wood construction, represents a significant assessment criterion. To gain insights into this aspect, this study utilized methods such as a shear strength test in accordance with EN 302-1:2013-06 under thermal loading (from 20 °C to 200 °C), and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) to determine the glass transition temperature (Tg). An increase in thermal load resulted in a decrease in shear strength and an increase in wood breakage. A hierarchy of adhesive groups was established based on strength performance and wood fai

Tensile bond strength of adhesive systems--effects of primer and thermocycling.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of primer and thermocycling on the bond strength of multi-purpose adhesive systems applied to enamel, under tensile stress. The following bonding systems were applied, according to the manufacturers' instructions, on unground enamel buccal surfaces of 96 premolars, with or without the application of primer: Scotchbond MP, OptiBond FL, Amalgambond Plus and OptiBond (dual-cure). A composite resin (Z100, 3M) was applied and light-cured in a cast metal hollow cone, which was previously fixed to the enamel surfaces. Half of the sample was subj

Effect of Loading Rate on Tensile Strength and Fracture Stress of Chocolate.

The fracture properties of five types of chocolate (dark, extra dark, milk, white, and ruby) were investigated using an indirect tensile test known as the Brazilian test. Two different loading rates of 0.0017 m/s and around 12 m/s were used through the universal testing machine TIRATEST and split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) technique. Results show that the tensile fracture stress increases with the loading rate. The sensitivity of the fracture stress at low-loading rates is lower than that at the high-loading rates. The obtained results can be used in industry for the correct processing of c

Effect of Repeated Sterilization on the Tensile Strength of Rubber Dam Clamps.

PURPOSE: The fracture of rubber dam clamps after repeated clinical uses can result in ingestion/aspiration of the fragments. This pilot study was aimed at examining whether the tensile strength of a rubber dam clamp changes significantly following the stresses of repeated clinical use and steam sterilizations. METHODS: One-hundred new stainless-steel rubber dam clamps were subjected to repeated steam sterilization and placement on a wooden dowel periodically, simulating clinical use. Two clamps were randomly selected for removal after every 50 sterilization cycles. Three-hundred such cycles w

Novel Device for Intraoperative Quantitative Measurements of Extraocular Muscle Tensile Strength.

Understanding the tensile properties of extraocular muscles (EOMs) is crucial for successful strabismus surgery and accurate predictions of surgical outcomes. Assessments of EOM tensile strength are traditionally highly dependent on the expertise of the ophthalmic surgeon, since they involve manually pulling the EOM in opposite directions. This approach only provides subjective measurements that are not quantifiable. Previous quantitative approaches have utilized various devices such as implanted force transducers or dial tension gauges connected to muscle tendons with nylon sutures, but these

Stretching desmin filaments with receding meniscus reveals large axial tensile strength.

Desmin forms the intermediate filament system of muscle cells where it plays important role in maintaining mechanical integrity and elasticity. Although the importance of intermediate-filament elasticity in cellular mechanics is being increasingly recognized, the molecular basis of desmin's elasticity is not fully understood. We explored desmin elasticity by molecular combing with forces calculated to be as large as 4nN. Average filament contour length increased 1.55-fold axial on average. Molecular combing together with EGTA-treatment caused the fragmentation of the filament into short, 60 to

Tensile strength of three resin cements following two alloy surface treatments.

Retainers for composite retained prostheses ("Maryland bridges") have traditionally relied upon an etched base metal alloy for micromechanical retention. This study compared the tensile bond strength of three resin cements using two alloy surface treatments. Rexillium III and Olympia disks were cast, oxidized, and given simulated porcelain firings. Paired specimens were cemented with Comspan, Panavia EX, or C & B Metabond after air abrasion with aluminum oxide or silicoating. Air-abraded Olympia disks were tin plated prior to luting with Panavia EX. Electrolytically etched Rexillium III specim

Lubrication empirical model to predict tensile strength of directly compressed powder blends.

A new approach is proposed to support prediction of tablet tensile strength as a function of both solid fraction (and/or compression pressure) and extent of lubrication by using empirical data to parameterise the model. This is a pre-requisite for simulation of the compaction unit operation where a linkage from tablet press operating parameters and formulation material properties to output tensile strength is required. The approach extends the previously published Kushner and Moore model to allow calculation across a range of solid fractions. The applicability of the approach is supported by t

Predicting the tensile strength of compacted multi-component mixtures of pharmaceutical powders.

PURPOSE: Pharmaceutical tablets are generally produced by compacting a mixture of several ingredients, including active drugs and excipients. It is of practical importance if the properties of such tablets can be predicted on the basis of the ones for constituent components. The purpose of this work is to develop a theoretical model which can predict the tensile strength of compacted multi-component pharmaceutical mixtures. METHODS: The model was derived on the basis of the Ryshkewitch-Duckworth equation that was originally proposed for porous materials. The required input parameters for the

Investigation of the Tensile Strength of Adhesive-Bonded Steels Using Surface Treatments.

This study explores the tensile strength of adhesive joints in steel, focusing on the influence of heat treatment and diverse surface modifications. Results indicate a notable relationship between annealing temperature and tensile strength, with the most favorable outcomes identified at 90 min and 165 °C. Particularly, surfaces treated through turning, sandblasting, and plasma treatment (type C) consistently outperformed other methods. A standout revelation emerged from the turned, sandblasted, and plasma-treated surface (C), showcasing an exceptional tensile strength of 69.06 MPa. Load-holdin

Aging Interfacial Structure and Abnormal Tensile Strength of SnAg3Cu0.5/Cu Solder Joints.

In this study, the interfacial structure and abnormal long-term increase of tensile strength in the interfacial intermetallic compounds (IMCs) between SnAg3Cu0.5 solder and Cu substrates during isothermal aging were investigated. After reflow soldering, the IMC layer at the interface was thin and scallop-type. The interfacial layer became thicker with the increase in aging time. After 200 h of aging at 150 °C, the thickness of the interface gradually increased to 3.93 μm and the interface became smooth. Compared with the unaged Cu-Sn interface, the aged joint interface contained more Cu3Sn. Th

Aging Decreases the Ultimate Tensile Strength of Bone-Patellar Tendon-Bone Allografts.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether aging imparts a clinically significant effect on the (1) mechanism of graft failure and (2) structural, material, and viscoelastic properties of patellar tendon allografts by evaluating these properties in younger donors (≤30 years of age) and older donors (>50 years of age). METHODS: A total of 34 younger (≤30 years of age) and 34 older (>50 years of age) nonirradiated, whole bone-tendon-bone allografts were prepared for testing by isolating the central third of the patellar tendon using a double-bladed 10-mm width scalpel under a 1

Comparison of adhesion formation and tensile strength after three laparoscopic herniorrhaphy techniques.

Several techniques for laparoscopic inguinal herniorrhaphy have been described in the literature: laparoscopic extraperitoneal mesh repair (EXTRA), transabdominal preperitoneal mesh repair (TAPP), and intraperitoneal onlay mesh repair (IPOM). To evaluate the incidence of adhesion formation and the tensile properties of these techniques, young male pigs underwent mesh placement using the above techniques. The animals had follow-up for 6 weeks, and no trocar site adhesions were observed. No intraperitoneal adhesions resulted in the group that underwent EXTRA technique. One case of filmy omental

Influence of the Tendon Grasping Technique on Tensile Strength in 6-strand Sutures.

PURPOSE: The locking configuration of the core suture in tendon repair considerably impacts the tendon's tensile strength. This study assessed the effects of two grasping techniques for 6-strand core sutures on gap formation resistance using linear load-to-failure testing under simulated tendon loading during active finger flexion. METHODS: Forty porcine flexor tendons were assigned to 3 groups and repaired using the Yoshizu #1 (Y1) technique or our novel 6-strand Yoshizu #3 (Y3) technique with or without peripheral sutures. The Y1 and Y3 techniques had similar suture configurations, but the

Effect of human urine on the tensile strength of sutures used for hypospadias surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Hypospadias is the most common congenital condition affecting between 1 in 250 and 300 live births. Even in experienced hands, surgery to repair this congenital defect can have a high complication rate. Wound dehiscence is reported to occur in 5% and fistula formation in 6%-40% depending on technique. The choice of suture material has been shown to affect the complication rate although there is (currently) no consensus about the best suture material to use. Ideally, the sutures used for urethroplasty should be absorbable while maintaining sufficient mechanical strength to support
