The effects of solar radiation and black body re-radiation on thermal comfort.

When the sun shines on people in enclosed spaces, such as in buildings or vehicles, it directly affects thermal comfort. There is also an indirect effect as surrounding surfaces are heated exposing a person to re-radiation. This laboratory study investigated the effects of long wave re-radiation on thermal comfort, individually and when combined with direct solar radiation. Nine male participants (26.0 +/- 4.7 years) took part in three experimental sessions where they were exposed to radiation from a hot black panel heated to 100 degrees C; direct simulated solar radiation of 600 Wm(-2) and th

Impact of a Thermal Care Bundle (Short Prewarming) on Shivering and Thermal Comfort in Osteosynthesis Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Shivering during a surgical procedure has been shown to lead to patient thermal discomfort that can result in an unsatisfactory experience of the whole surgical process besides the physiological consequences that may arise due to the adrenergic activation response. The aim was to determine if implementation of a thermal care bundle with a short prewarming period decreased the incidence of shivering and improved thermal comfort in patients undergoing osteosynthesis. DESIGN: Open-label, single-center randomized controlled trial. METHODS: In total, 148 patients who underwent osteosynth

Thermal comfort analysis of car drivers through physiological responses in different cabin environments.

A comfortable cabin thermal environment is vital for driver well-being and safety. To establish quantitative guidelines, this study investigated the relationships between physiological signals and subjective thermal perception under realistic vehicular conditions. We collected thermal sensation and comfort votes (TSV/CSV) from a diverse cohort across a range of cabin temperatures, simultaneously measuring five physiological signals: wrist temperature, electrocardiogram, electrodermal activity, electromyogram, and respiration. Our analysis revealed two key findings: 1) Wrist temperature and spe

Spraying cooling room with essential oils: effects on milk, behavior and thermal comfort.

There is evidence of the benefits of essential oils (EOs) for improving the performance and health of dairy cows when supplied per diet, as opposed to using them as sprays. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate whether the spraying of eucalyptus and mint EOs in a cooling room alters the behavior and thermoregulatory responses of Jersey cows during the transition period. Fourteen cows were divided into treatment (spraying with EOs) and control (spraying with water only). Daily baths were performed in a cooling room for 14 min under summer conditions. The animals’ respiratory ra

Determination of improved climatic conditions for thermal comfort and energy efficiency in electric buses.

In electric buses, the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system is responsible for up to 50% of the energy consumption, thereby significantly affecting the efficiency. It is therefore necessary to identify improved thermal settings for the bus cabin to minimize the energy consumption, while guaranteeing good thermal comfort. To achieve this goal, this paper presents the results of climatic measurements in an electric bus in Berlin, Germany. These measurements were performed for outer temperatures between 5.3 °C and 7.8 °C and four cabin temperature settings. During the measureme

Development of a perioperative thermal insulation system: Testing comfort properties for different textile sets.

The poorly physical and psychological conditions of the patients make the body thermal protection crucial in the perioperative context, due to the risk of hypothermia. The lack of evidence regarding the effectiveness of textile coverings in protecting patients in the operating room, underscores the recommendation of the forced warming system using non-woven fabric for ensuring the best thermal protection in the perioperative context. This study is part of a development process of a three-layered thermal insulation system, a blanket for use in the perioperative context. After previous selection

Effect of whole-body cryostimulation on skin temperature and thermal comfort in severe obese patients.

Obesity is a global public health problem, and new non-surgical or pharmacological treatments are being explored. Among these, cryostimulation has emerged as a new beneficial non-invasive method. Several studies have reported a greater decrease in skin temperature following cryostimulation in individuals with higher BMI or body fat percentage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a single 3-min whole-body cryostimulation (WBC) session on skin temperature and cold perception in male and female obese subjects. Skin temperature changes before and after the 3-min cryostimulation exp
