Associations of Tobacco Advertising Appeal With Intentions to Use Alternative Tobacco Products Among Young Tobacco Users Experiencing Homelessness.

PURPOSE: Virtually nothing is known about the potential effects of tobacco advertising on tobacco use among youth experiencing homelessness, a vulnerable population with high tobacco use rates. This study examines associations between the appeal of advertising for 5 classes of tobacco product (electronic cigarettes, hookah, cigars, cigarillos, and smokeless tobacco) and future intentions to use those products again among homeless youth who had indicated any level of lifetime use. DESIGN: A cross-sectional design was used. SETTING: Settings were 25 service and street sites in Los Angeles Coun

Prevalence and denial of current tobacco product use: Combustible and heated tobacco products, Japan, 2022.

Monitoring tobacco use has become more complex with the proliferation of novel tobacco products, including heated tobacco products (HTPs). We assessed the latest prevalence and denial of tobacco product use in Japan, a major market for HTPs. 28,124 individuals aged 16-74 responded to a nationwide, internet-based, self-reported survey. Current (past-30-day) tobacco use was assessed for HTPs, cigarettes, non-cigarette combustible tobacco, and dual (combustible plus HTP) use. Denial of current tobacco use was determined when respondents reported past-30-day use of a specific tobacco product ("On

Electronic device or regulated tobacco product? Learning from the diffusion of heated tobacco products in Spain.

OBJECTIVES: Tobacco companies have introduced heated tobacco product (HTP) in many countries and marketed it on the grounds that it is a less harmful alternative to health. However, tobacco companies have been widely criticized for taking advantage of a loophole that allows electronic devices to circumvent regulations limiting tobacco advertising. This work aims to determine whether HTPs respected the rules that regulate tobacco advertising when it was introduced in Spain. STUDY DESIGN: This is an observational epidemiological study. METHODS: Using monthly time series data from September 201

Assessment of the Exposure to Tobacco-Specific Nitrosamines and Minor Tobacco Alkaloids in Users of Various Tobacco/Nicotine Products.

Tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs), in particular, the human carcinogens 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) and N'-nitrosonornicotine (NNN), are important toxicants in tobacco and also (as contaminants) in nicotine products. In a clinical study comprising a period of 74 h under confinement, we investigated the exposure to NNK, NNN, N'-nitrosoanabasine (NAB), and N'-nitrosoanatabine (NAT) as well as to the minor tobacco alkaloids anabasine (AB) and anatabine (AT) by measuring suitable biomarkers in habitual users of combustible cigarettes (CCs), electronic cigarettes (ECs),

Research Progress on Nicotine Control Methods in Tobacco Products.

This paper systematically reviews recent research progress on nicotine control methods in tobacco products, with a focus on various strategies including the regulation of internal tobacco components (such as organic acids, pH, polyols, and moisture content) and the application of external functional materials (e.g., bacterial cellulose-based sustained-release systems and MOF composites). The mechanisms and control efficacy of these approaches are elaborated, along with a comparative analysis of their applicable conditions and limitations. Furthermore, emerging research directions in the precis

Oral and periodontal implications of tobacco and nicotine products.

Tobacco use contributes to more mortality and morbidity globally than any other behavioral risk factor. Adverse effects do not spare the oral cavity, with many oral diseases more common, and treatments less successful, in the tobacco-using patient. Many of the oral health effects of cigarette smoking are well established, but other forms of tobacco, including cigars and smokeless tobacco, merit dental professionals' attention. Recently, an expanding variety of new or emerging tobacco and/or nicotine products has been brought to market, most prominently electronic cigarettes, but also including

Evolution of tobacco products: recent history and future directions.

Declines in cigarette smoking prevalence in many countries and the consolidation of the tobacco industry have prompted the introduction of other forms of nicotine delivery. These include electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), heated tobacco products (HTPs) and oral nicotine products (ONPs). Evolving over time, some of these products now deliver nicotine at levels comparable to cigarettes and may serve as effective substitutes for smokers. However, certain products, especially ENDS like JUUL, have also appealed to youth and non-smokers, prompting concerns about expanding nicotine use (and

A call to ban the sale of tobacco products.

Tobacco is both toxic and addictive. Mounting evidence shows that tobacco use has a detrimental impact on almost every aspect of human health, causing or worsening deadly public health crises from the cancer epidemic to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, while tobacco use is a threat to both personal and public health, it continues to surge across the world, especially in China and other low- and middle-income countries. To this end, this article argues in favor of using a ban on the sale of all tobacco products as a practical solution to the global tobacco use epidemic. It is our hope that insig

Microbial communities and gene contributions in smokeless tobacco products.

Smokeless tobacco products (STP) contain bacteria, mold, and fungi due to exposure from surrounding environments and tobacco processing. This has been a cause for concern since the presence of microorganisms has been linked to the formation of highly carcinogenic tobacco-specific nitrosamines. These communities have also been reported to produce toxins and other pro-inflammatory molecules that can cause mouth lesions and elicit inflammatory responses in STP users. Moreover, microbial species in these products could transfer to the mouth and gastrointestinal tract, potentially altering the esta

Quantification of Flavors, Volatile Organic Compounds, Tobacco Markers, and Tobacco-Specific Nitrosamines in Heated Tobacco Products and Their Mainstream Aerosol.

As an alternative to cigarettes, the sales of heated tobacco products (HTPs) have increased in the Japanese market. This may contribute to improving a smoker's health because the levels of most toxic compounds─such as tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)─in the mainstream of HTPs are lower than those in cigarettes. However, the risks associated with the flavors that provide attractive tastes to HTPs remain unknown. We demonstrated that compared with cigarettes, HTPs reduce the health risks associated with VOCs and TSNAs while achieving comparable nicotine

Evaluation of fluoride levels in areca nut, tobacco, and commercial smokeless tobacco products: a pilot study.

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a premalignant condition associated with chewing areca nut and tobacco products. We observed increased fluoride levels in some OSMF-endemic regions, and the observation suggested that fluoride exposure may contribute to its pathogenesis. This study aimed to assess the fluoride content of various smokeless tobacco items as a potential influencing source. Fluoride concentration was analysed in commercial areca nut products, including gutkha, pan masala, and raw areca nut, along with tobacco, slaked lime, and catechu samples from Karnataka, India. Fluoride was mea

Carbonyl Compounds Containing Formaldehyde Produced from the Heated Mouthpiece of Tobacco Sticks for Heated Tobacco Products.

Diverse harmful compounds can be emitted during the heating of tobacco sticks for heated tobacco products (HTPs). In this study, the generation of harmful compounds from the filter, instead of tobacco in tobacco sticks, was confirmed. The heat of a heated tobacco product device can be transferred to the tobacco stick filter, resulting in the generation of harmful compounds from the heated filter. Since the heating materials (tobacco consumable) of the tobacco sticks evaluated in this study were different depending on the brand, the harmful compounds emitted from the heated tobacco stick filter
