A Case of Simultaneous Ectopic Tooth Extraction and Removal of Migrated Dental Implant from Maxillary Sinus.

When a dental implant migrates to the maxillary sinus it should be extracted immediately as it may cause sinusitis or further migrate to one of the other paranasal sinuses. Although usually detected due to symptoms such as nasal obstruction, nasal discharge, and nasal bleeding, an ectopic tooth in the maxillary sinus can sometimes be revealed incidentally on radiographic examination. Here, we report a case of simultaneous extraction of a dental implant that had migrated to the maxillary sinus and removal of an ectopic tooth that had arisen in the same location. The patient was a 73-year-old ma

Spontaneous correction of pathologic tooth migration and reduced infrabony pockets following nonsurgical periodontal therapy: a case report.

This case report describes the spontaneous correction of pathologic tooth migration and reduced infrabony pockets after nonsurgical periodontal therapy. A 3-mm diastema between the maxillary incisors was closed completely, and the mandibular teeth, which had migrated pathologically, returned to the optimal position. Clinical evaluation showed a significant reduction in probing depth, with increased clinical attachment and bone deposition demonstrated radiologically.

Unusual migration of a tooth root into the ethmoid sinus after dental extraction: a case report and literature review.

Iatrogenic foreign bodies of dental origin are rare and frequently involve the maxillary sinuses. We report an unusual case of tooth-root migration into the ethmoid sinus after dental extraction. A 54-year-old woman with a history of maxillary left molar extraction 6 months prior presented with symptoms of left nasal obstruction, green malodorous nasal discharge, hyposmia, and left-sided facial pressure for 3 months. She was diagnosed with unilateral sinusitis, and nasal endoscopy revealed severe left middle meatus edema with thick pus discharge. Computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses re

Tooth eruption and migration theories: can they account for the presence of a 13,000-year-old mesiodens in the vault of the palate?

A case of a mesiodens in the vault of the palate of a skull estimated to be approximately 13,000 years old is presented. The currently cited theories of tooth eruption were considered, and it was concluded that only the newly formulated BVT (blood vessel thrust) theory of tooth eruption can account for the migration of this mesiodens into that position.

Regenerative periodontal surgery and orthodontic therapy in the treatment of patients with stage IV periodontitis and pathologic tooth migration.

BACKGROUND: Patients suffering from stage IV periodontitis are often characterized by pathologic tooth migration, drifting, flaring, posterior bite collapse, and secondary occlusal trauma (case type 2). Many times, these patients seek treatment because of functional and esthetic demands. The majority of these patients could benefit from an integrated, interdisciplinary approach combining periodontal therapy and orthodontics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This narrative review aimed to update the scientific evidence on current treatment approaches for patients with stage IV case type 2, presenting wi

Palatal migration of two mesodens in a prehistoric Tennessee Indian: a case for the blood vessel thrust theory of tooth movement.

The skull of a prehistoric, Middle Mississippian, American Indian shows two mesodens that migrated to the distal margin of the palate. These teeth are positioned in such a way as to avoid the most common intraoral forces affecting tooth movement. The resorption of the palatal bone, distal to the teeth indicates movement caused by forces predicted by the Blood Vessel Thrust Theory.

Comprehensive treatment for severe periodontitis with pathologic tooth migration-related bimaxillary protrusion: A case report with 3-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: Patients with severe periodontitis often experience pathologic tooth migration (PTM), which impairs esthetics and leads to occlusal disharmony (for example, premature contacts and traumatic occlusion) that can further exacerbate periodontitis. The authors describe a patient who exhibited severe periodontitis with PTM-related bimaxillary protrusion. This report includes 3-year clinical outcomes after periodontal regenerative therapy, implant-anchored orthodontic therapy, and implant prosthodontics intended to achieve both functional and esthetic improvements. Malocclusions, pathologic tooth migration, and the need for orthodontic treatment in subjects with stage III-IV periodontitis. A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Literature is scarce on malocclusion prevalence and orthodontic treatment need (OTN) in subjects with stage III-IV periodontitis. Study aims were to assess prevalence of primary and secondary malocclusions in subjects with stage III-IV periodontitis and OTN based on pathologic tooth migration (PTM) and occlusal trauma of anterior teeth (AT). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: One hundred and twenty-one subjects with stage III-IV periodontitis were examined. A comprehensive periodontal-orthodontic examination was performed. Exclusion criteria: age <30 years, removable prosthetics, uncontrolled

Repositioning of a pathologically migrated tooth using autologous platelet-rich plasma: a case report with 3-year follow-up.

An intricate balance between the periodontal tissues and the forces of occlusion, tongue, and lips helps to maintain a tooth in its physiologic position within the dental arch. Disturbances in the equilibrium can cause a tooth to migrate pathologically, often requiring multidisciplinary treatment approaches. The present case demonstrates, for the first time, the use of autologous platelet-rich plasma to aid in tooth repositioning after pathologic tooth migration. A 25-year-old woman presented with extrusion and labial migration of the maxillary left central incisor, a diastema of 3 mm, and gra

Additively manufactured monolithic zirconia post-and-core crowns in the management of severe pathologic anterior tooth migration: A 1-year follow-up report.

Severe pathologic tooth migration (PTM) secondary to chronic periodontitis presents significant functional and esthetic challenges. This report describes a fully digital workflow for rehabilitating severe anterior PTM using additively manufactured (AM) monolithic zirconia post-and-core crowns. Through digital planning, precise crown resection and ferrule and post space preparation were completed before an intraoral scanner captured accurate digital scans. The 1-piece restorations provided excellent fit and adhesion, significantly improved the axial inclination of the clinical crowns, and yield

Self-correction of pathologic tooth migration after nonsurgical periodontal treatment in a metabolic syndrome patient with severe periodontitis and drug-influenced gingival enlargement.

Drug-influenced gingival enlargement (DIGE) and reduced bone support caused by periodontitis are two of the etiologic factors for pathologic tooth migration (PTM). Comprehensive management, including surgical, orthodontic, and prosthodontic treatment, is usually required for recovery from severe DIGE and PTM. An 85-year-old Taiwanese male with a history of hypertension and uncontrolled diabetes mellitus (DM) visited our dental department for severe gingival enlargement and spontaneous bleeding. He was diagnosed as having advanced periodontitis and DIGE. Remarkable PTM occurred on the front sex

Spontaneous correction of pathologically migrated teeth with periodontal therapy alone.

Pathological tooth migration is a characteristic sign of an advanced form of chronic periodontitis. The etiology of pathological tooth migration is complex and multifactorial. Usually treatment of pathological migration includes a multidisciplinary approach. However, in some cases, spontaneous repositioning of the pathologically migrated teeth has been reported following periodontal therapy alone. In the present report, following periodontal surgery, there was a spontaneous repositioning of the migrated teeth and restoration of dento-facial esthetics. The treatment options in cases of patholog

[Role of tooth extractions in orthodontics].

Extraction therapy can be applied only under strict observation of indications. It requires thorough knowledge of the laws governing the migration of teeth after extraction, the normal development of the orofacial system and normal eruption of teeth. Careless extractions performed without thorough prior analysis cause irreparable harm instead of improving the situation. In the majority of cases extraction must be followed by appliance therapy to achieve controlled closure of the spaces, align the teeth in the dental arch and restore proper occlusion. The mode and extent of this treatment must

Pathologic migration of anterior teeth in patients with moderate to severe periodontitis.

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of pathologic migration of anterior teeth in patients with moderate to severe periodontitis. The correlation between pathologic migration of anterior teeth and attachment loss (AL) was investigated, and an attempt was made to identify the most common early form of pathologic migration. Prevalence of tooth migration was studied in a group of 343 patients with moderate to severe periodontitis before treatment. The presence of pathologic migration was determined from the chief complaint and patient awareness o tooth movement in the last 5

Esthetic and functional rehabilitation of a severely compromised central incisor: an interdisciplinary approach.

This case report of a patient with a central incisor with rapid destruction of periodontal tissues associated with pathologic tooth migration illustrates the esthetic and functional reconstruction of a severely compromised tooth. An interdisciplinary approach, including resolution of the infection and regenerative periodontal surgery followed by orthodontic tooth movement, transformed a hopeless tooth with high mobility, attachment loss approaching the apex, and a Miller Class IV recession into a clinically healthy tooth. Treatment planning for periodontally involved anterior teeth with pathol

Transmigration of impacted lower canine. Case report and review of literature.

Retention, that is, a permanent tooth which is unerupted more than a year after the normal age of eruption, is a relatively rare event, except in the case of the third molars and the upper canines. Transmigration is defined as the phenomenon of more than half an unerupted impacted tooth crossing the midline. We report the clinical case of a twenty-year-old patient presenting transmigration of the lower left canine, with a type 4 transmigration pattern (Mupparapu). Likewise, we carried out a review of the literature of the cases that have been published on transmigration, updating the main aspe

Osteonecrosis of the jaw induced by arsenic trioxide therapy in a leukemia patient: A rare case report and literature review.

A patient suffering from acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) was referred to the dental department before introduction of chemotherapy by all-trans retinoic acid and arsenic trioxide (ATO). A panoramic radiography showed his third upper maxillary left tooth included into the maxillary bone. The patient presented with a febrile episode. Consequently, the infectious gateway was researched. A left maxillary sinus migration of his third upper left tooth together with a bony sequestrum has been observed on a CT-scan. A surgery was then performed to remove the bony sequestrum and the tooth. The first
