Torque Accuracy of Spring-Style Dental Torque Wrenches After Repeated Mechanical Loading and Sterilization: An In Vitro Study.

This in vitro study evaluated the torque accuracy of spring-style mechanical torque-limiting devices (MTLDs) from three manufacturers under clinically simulated conditions. Nine devices (Implance, Astra Tech, and DIO) were tested with a digital torque tester. Target torque values were 25 and 35 Ncm for Implance and Astra Tech and 20 and 35 Ncm for DIO. Each device underwent 40 experimental cycles, including baseline measurement, mechanical fatigue by 20 loading repetitions at target torque, post-fatigue measurement, and steam sterilization. Torque difference and percentage deviation from targe

Field-free spin-orbit torque switching assisted by in-plane unconventional spin torque in ultrathin [Pt/Co]N.

Electrical manipulation of magnetization without an external magnetic field is critical for the development of advanced non-volatile magnetic-memory technology that can achieve high memory density and low energy consumption. Several recent studies have revealed efficient out-of-plane spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in a variety of materials for field-free type-z SOT switching. Here, we report on the corresponding type-x configuration, showing significant in-plane unconventional spin polarizations from sputtered ultrathin [Pt/Co]N, which are either highly textured on single crystalline MgO substrates

Human torque is not present in chimpanzee brain.

We searched for positional brain surface asymmetries measured as displacements between corresponding vertex pairs in relation to a mid-sagittal plane in Magnetic Resonance (MR) images of the brains of 223 humans and 70 chimpanzees. In humans deviations from symmetry were observed: 1) a Torque pattern comprising right-frontal and left-occipital "petalia" together with downward and rightward "bending" of the occipital extremity, 2) leftward displacement of the anterior temporal lobe and the anterior and central segments of superior temporal sulcus (STS), and 3) posteriorly in the position of lef

Brain torque and sex differences in schizophrenia.

The opposing asymmetry of the frontoparietal brain regions has been referred to as 'torque' and may be used as an index of speed of neurodevelopment. It has been recently suggested that torque is minimized in male schizophrenia, reflecting anomalous neurodevelopment. This study examined volumetric and linear torque in a group of 20 schizophrenia patients and 20 healthy individuals; all were right-handed and under the age of 46 years. None of the main or interaction effects on torque were statistically significant, although the sex difference in torque among schizophrenia patients (male larger

Orbital torque switching in perpendicularly magnetized materials.

The orbital Hall effect in light materials has attracted considerable attention for developing orbitronic devices. Here we investigate the orbital torque efficiency and demonstrate the switching of the perpendicularly magnetized materials through the orbital Hall material, i.e., Zr. The orbital torque efficiency of approximately 0.78 is achieved in the Zr orbital Hall material with the perpendicularly magnetized [Co/Pt]3 sample, which significantly surpasses that of the perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB/Gd/CoFeB sample (approximately 0.04). Such a notable difference is attributed to the differe

Mandibular lip bumper for molar torque control.

Treatment effects of lip bumpers alone include flaring of the mandibular incisors, distalization and uprighting of the mandibular first molars, and buccal expansion of the canines, premolars, and molar. Lip forces are transmitted through this appliance onto the molars. Moreover the lip bumper is able to derotate, expand or constrict, upright and reinforce the anchorage whereas torque control is lacking. Aim of this paper is the presentation of a new type of lip bumper that allows the molar torque control.

Sign Reversal of Spin-Transfer Torques.

Spin-transfer torque (STT) and spin-orbit torque (SOT) form the core of spintronics, allowing for the control of magnetization through electric currents. While the sign of SOT can be manipulated through material and structural engineering, it is conventionally understood that STT lacks a degree of freedom in its sign. However, this study presents the first demonstration of manipulating the STT sign by engineering heavy metals adjacent to magnetic materials in magnetic heterostructures. Spin torques are quantified through magnetic domain-wall speed measurements, and subsequently, both STT and S

Spin-Torque-Driven Subterahertz Antiferromagnetic Resonance Dynamics.

Spin torque antiferromagnetic resonance (ST-AFMR) is fundamental to high-frequency spintronic devices, such as ultrafast magnetic storage and terahertz spin nano-oscillators. However, limited by generating terahertz spin torques, it has been confined to the gigahertz in-plane linearly polarized low-frequency mode of easy-plane antiferromagnets. Here we employ optical terahertz pulses as high-frequency excitation sources and time-resolved Faraday effect as detection to investigate ST-AFMR of the out-of-plane linearly polarized high-frequency mode in α-Fe_{2}O_{3}/Pt bilayers. We observe ST-AFMR

Occipital bending (Yakovlevian torque) in bipolar depression.

Differing levels of occipital lobe asymmetry and enlarged lateral ventricles have been reported within patients with bipolar disorder (BD) compared with healthy controls, suggesting different rates of occipital bending (OB). This may exert pressure on subcortical structures, such as the hippocampus, reduced among psychiatric patients. We investigated OB prevalence in 35 patients with BD and 36 healthy controls, and ventricular and occipital volumes. Prevalence was four times higher among BD patients (12/35 [34.3%]) than in control subjects (3/36 [8.3%]), as well as larger lateral ventricular v

Isokinetic torque levels in hemophiliac knee musculature.

The purposes of this study were to 1) measure peak torques generated by knee extensors and flexors in hemophilia patients; 2) describe flexor to extensor; 3) record the point in the arc of motion where peak torque was achieved; 4) correlate results with age, degree of hemophilic arthropathy, and presence of flexion contracture; and 5) compare results with reports on healthy subjects. Forty-seven patients (94 knees) with severe hemophilia were tested with a Cybex II isokinetic dynamometer at a speed of 30 degrees per second. Height, weight, thigh girths, and passive knee range of motion were re

Identification of Intrinsic Friction and Torque Ripple for a Robotic Joint with Integrated Torque Sensors with Application to Wheel-Bearing Characterization.

Although integrated joint torque sensors in robots dispel the need for external force/torque sensors at the wrist to measure interactions, an inherent challenge is that they also measure the robot's intrinsic dynamics. This is especially problematic for delicate robot manipulation tasks, where interaction forces may be comparable to the robot intrinsic dynamics. Therefore, the intrinsic dynamics must first be experimentally estimated under no-load conditions, when the measurement only consists of torques due to the transmission of the robot actuator, before external interactions may be measure

Exploring the Influence of Quadriceps Peak Torque and Rate of Torque Development on Running Mechanics After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: After anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), chronic changes in knee joint biomechanics during higher level tasks, such as running, may negatively impact long-term knee joint health. Among the factors that contribute to these chronic changes, the influence of quadriceps strength on knee joint biomechanics during running is not well understood. HYPOTHESIS: Higher involved limb quadriceps strength (peak torque and rate of torque development [RTD]) and limb symmetry index (LSI) will be positively associated with greater peak knee flexion angle and peak knee extensor moment

Touching with torque enables human-level robotic dexterity.

Achieving human-like forceful manipulation remains a major challenge in robotics because of the lack of critical environmental interaction cues such as collisions, balance, and resistance. We present a torque-angle-pressure (TAP) tactile sensor leveraging magnetic flux density gradients to achieve bidirectional, ultrasensitive (~0.1°, ~0.4 newton-millimeter), and high-linearity (R2 = 0.99) sensing over a wide range (±241.6 newton-millimeter) through a single readout channel. The accurate torque sensing ability provides both force and distance information, bringing the environment into the inte

Electrical manipulation of centrosymmetric antiferromagnets by Néel torque.

Electric control of Néel vector is a central task of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spintronics. The major scheme so far has relied on the Néel spin-orbit torque, which however is restricted to AFMs with broken inversion symmetry. Here, we explore a nonlinear Néel torque, uniquely enabling electric control in the vast class of centrosymmetric AFMs including altermagnets, where the existing scheme fails. This new type of Néel torque operates in both AFM metals and insulators, and can appear in all collinear AFM configurations in all the 122 magnetic point groups. Combined with first-principles calcula

Terahertz oscillation driven by optical spin-orbit torque.

Antiferromagnets are promising for nano-scale oscillator in a wide frequency range from gigahertz up to terahertz. Experimentally realizing antiferromagnetic moment oscillation via spin-orbit torque, however, remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate that the optical spin-orbit torque induced by circularly polarized laser can be used to drive free decaying oscillations with a frequency of 2 THz in metallic antiferromagnetic Mn2Au thin films. Due to the local inversion symmetry breaking of Mn2Au, ultrafast a.c. current is generated via spin-to-charge conversion, which can be detected through free-s

Investigation of long lateral mass screw insertion torque.

BACKGROUND: Here, we assessed a new trajectory and insertion torque for the placement of a long lateral mass screw (LLMS) that offers stronger posterior fixation versus a shorter lateral mass screw (LMS) in the posterior cervical spine. We report a short technical note of the insertion torque of LLMS. METHODS: The insertion trajectory/torque was evaluated in 30 patients (10 males and 20 females) undergoing posterior cervical LLMS fusions (2021-2023). Patients averaged 65 years of age. Pathology included eight cervical spine injuries, ten cord injuries, four dislocations/fractures, and eight o

Force, torque, and stress relaxation with direct laryngoscopy.

The anesthetist exerts axial force on the laryngoscope handle to expose the glottis. The anesthetist must also apply a perpendicular force to balance the torque on the laryngoscope. Several studies have measured axial force during direct laryngoscopy, but none has measured torque. This study used a newly designed laryngoscope handle to measure force and torque simultaneously during direct laryngoscopy of ASA grade I and II patients requiring general anesthesia and endotracheal intubation for elective surgery. In 58 patients, peak force averaged 38 +/- 2 newtons. Peak torque averaged 4 +/- 0.2
