Russian‑Language Version of the Trail Making Test Implemented on the Inquisit Computer Platform.

UNLABELLED: The aim of the study was to adapt and validate the Trail Making Test (TMT) implemented on the Inquisit computer platform. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 69 individuals were examined: 34 conditionally mentally healthy volunteers (12 men and 22 women; mean age 20.6 [20.1; 21.2] years) and 35 schizophrenia patients (12 men and 23 women; mean age 38.7 [34.1; 43.3] years). The test tasks and user interface of the original English‑language TMT script were translated into Russian. The correctness of the translation was verified by the Inquisit platform developers, after which the Russ

Performance of the walking trail making test in older adults with white matter hyperintensities.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported that the walking trail making test (WTMT) completion time is significantly higher in patients with developmental coordination disorders and mild cognitive impairments. We hypothesized that WTMT performance would be altered in older adults with white matter hyperintensities (WMH). AIM: To explore the performance in the WTMT in older people with WMH. METHODS: In this single-center, observational study, 25 elderly WMH patients admitted to our hospital from June 2019 to June 2020 served as the WMH group and 20 participants matched for age, gender, and ed

Tablet-Based Functional MRI of the Trail Making Test: Effect of Tablet Interaction Mode.

The Trail Making Test (TMT) is widely used for assessing executive function, frontal lobe abilities, and visual motor skills. Part A of this pen-and-paper test (TMT-A) involves linking numbers randomly distributed in space, in ascending order. Part B (TMT-B) alternates between linking numbers and letters. TMT-B is more demanding than TMT-A, but the mental processing that supports the performance of this test remains incompletely understood. Functional MRI (fMRI) may help to clarify the relationship between TMT performance and brain activity, but providing an environment that supports real-worl

Cognitive, Motor and Oculomotor Contributions to the Trail Making Test in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.

BACKGROUND: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor, oculomotor and cognitive impairments. Yet disentangling cognitive deficits from motor and oculomotor dysfunction remains a diagnostic and methodological challenge. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate how cognitive, motor, and oculomotor impairments contribute to performance in the Trail Making Test (TMT) in PSP patients. METHODS: Eighty-one patients with PSP-Richardson's syndrome underwent the Toronto Cognitive Assessment, the Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson's Disease Rati

Assessing mental flexibility: neuroanatomical and neuropsychological correlates of the Trail Making Test in elderly people.

The Trail Making Test part B (TMT-B) is highly sensitive to age-related changes in the brain and cognitive function. However, the precise contribution of periventricular hyperintensities (PVH), deep white matter hyperintensities (DWMH), and medial temporal lobe atrophy (MTA) to task performance remains unspecified. Similarly, diminished performance may be due to deficient flexibility functions, but also to other age-related cognitive decline (e.g., mental slowing). The aim of the present study was to determine neuroanatomical (PVH, DWMH, MTA) and neuropsychological (working memory, executive f

Derived trail making test indices in a sample of narcotic/other opiate abusers: demographic effects.

Derived indices on the Trail Making Test (TMT), a test often used to screen for cognitive impairment, were examined in a sample of 191 narcotic/other opiate abusers in drug abuse treatment programs. A mixed race sample was drawn from electronic files of data from the Drug Abuse Treatment Outcome Study (DATOS). The DATOS was a naturalistic, prospective cohort study that collected data from 1991-1993 in 96 programs in 11 cities in the United States. Data were analyzed to determine the effects of demographic variables on derived indices created by adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing pa

Abnormally reduced frontal cortex activity during Trail-Making-Test in prodromal parkinson's disease-a fNIRS study.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder leading to typical motor as well as a range of non-motor symptoms, including cognitive decline mainly characterized by executive deficits. The latter are known to appear years before the typical motor signs, thus representing the prodromal phase of PD. However, appropriate methods for measuring executive dysfunction in this context are not well established yet. Traditionally, executive performance is associated with frontal structures. Here, we investigated prodromal, early PD patients and healthy controls regarding their executive funct

How effective is the Trail Making Test (Parts A and B) in identifying cognitively impaired drivers?

BACKGROUND: the medical community plays an important role in identifying drivers who may no longer be competent to drive due to illnesses such as dementia. Several office-based cognitive screening tools are currently used by the medical community, e.g. Mini-Mental State Examination, Trail Making Test (TMT), to assist in the identification of cognitively impaired (CI) at-risk drivers. However, the predictive validity of these tools is questionable. OBJECTIVE: to examine the predictive power of the TMT for on-road driving performance. METHODS: data from a prospective sample of CI and healthy o

Heterogeneity in Trail Making Test performance in OEF/OIF/OND veterans with mild traumatic brain injury.

This study used cluster analysis to examine variability in Trail Making Test (TMT) performance in a sample of Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND) veterans referred for mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Three clusters were extracted, two of which were characterized by level of performance and the third with a unique performance pattern characterized by slow performance on the TMT B (Low B). Clusters did not differ on demographic or psychiatric variables. The Above Average cluster had better performance on measures of processing speed, working me

[Results of the Trail Making Test among patients suffering from depressive disorders and organic depressive disorders].

AIM: Coexistence of depression and dementia for many years has been widely studied for many years. According to the authors for clinical practice, both psychiatric and psychological, it is also important to effectively differentiate between these disease entities. The aim of this study is to compare the implementation of the Trail Making Test (TMT) in patients diagnosed with depressive disorders and those with organic depressive disorders. METHODS: A sample of 150 persons aged 18-68 years participated in the study. Patients who took part in the investigation were divided into three groups: de

Machine learning based digital assessment of mild cognitive impairment using mouse trajectories during the trail making test.

One of the objectives of digital neuropsychology is to apply computational methods to improve the accuracy of traditional assessments. The Trail Making Test (TMT) is one of the most popular neuropsychological tests for executive functions assessment. Participants have to connect a sequence of items in order without lifting the pencil. In Part A (TMT-A) the items are identified with Arabic numerals. In Part B (TMT-B) they are identified with numbers and capital letters, and participants have to connect them in alternate order (1-A-2-B-…). We implemented a computerized TMT (cTMT) that preserves

Trail Making Test A improves performance characteristics of the International HIV Dementia Scale to identify symptomatic HAND.

Although HIV-associated dementia (HAD) occurs in less than 5 % of individuals with access to combination antiretroviral therapy, rates of milder forms of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) are much higher. We sought to define an optimal cut point for the International HIV Dementia Scale (IHDS) in Thailand for the identification of symptomatic HAND, defined as both HAD and mild neurocognitive disorder. We then sought to determine if adding a simple test from a larger neuropsychological battery could improve the performance characteristics for identifying symptomatic HAND. In this stu

Architecture and anatomy of executive processes: evidence from verbal fluency and Trail Making Test in 2009 stroke patients.

OBJECTIVES: The few voxel-wise lesion-symptom mapping (VLSM) studies aimed at identifying the anatomy of executive function are limited by the absence of a model and by small populations. Using Trail Making Test (TMT) and verbal fluency and a model of their architectures, our objective was to identify the key structures underlying two major executive processes, set-shifting and strategic word search. METHODS: We applied a validated VLSM analysis to harmonized cognitive and imaging data from 2009 ischemic stroke patients as a part of the Meta VCI Map consortium. All contrast analyses used an a

Offering alphabet support in the Trail Making Test: Increasing validity for participants with insufficient automatization of the alphabet.

Insufficient automatization of the alphabet may falsely impair performance on the Trail Making Test among persons with dyslexia or persons not accustomed to the Latin alphabet. We analyze whether writing the alphabet on top of the test sheet changes performance in these risk groups, and whether alphabet support reduces the complexity of the set-shifting task.One-hundred and seventy patients referred to neuropsychological assessment participated and were given both a TMT-version offering alphabet support and the D-KEFS TMT. The discrepancy between the D-KEFS subtask where lines are drawn succes

Trail Making Test performance in early abstinence from methamphetamine: human evidence for a drug-associated Parkinsonian-like phenotype.

INTRODUCTION: Methamphetamine misuse is associated with elevated rates of Parkinson's disease (PD), and both conditions degrade fronto-striatal circuitry, primarily demonstrated in animal and post-mortem human studies. Despite this, few clinical studies have examined overlapping presentation, or whether long-term methamphetamine users exhibit a Parkinsonian-like phenotype. To examine whether recently abstinent individuals with methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) show Parkinsonian-like cognitive inflexibility, and whether these deficits vary by sex or patterns of use. METHODS: Forty-nine indivi

Predictors of decision-making on the Iowa Gambling Task: independent effects of lifetime history of substance use disorders and performance on the Trail Making Test.

Poor decision-making and executive function deficits are frequently observed in individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs), and executive deficits may contribute to poor decision-making in this population. This study examined the influence of lifetime history of an alcohol, cocaine, heroin, or polysubstance use disorder on decision-making as measured by the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) after controlling for executive ability, demographic characteristics, and current substance use. Participants (131 with lifetime history of SUD and 37 controls) completed the IGT and two neuropsychological test

Executive functioning and gambling: performance on the trail making test is associated with gambling problems in older adult gamblers.

Rates of gambling problems in older adults have risen with increased accessibility of gambling venues. One possible contributor to problem gambling among older adults is decreased self-control brought about by diminished executive functioning. Consistent with this possibility, Study 1 revealed that older adults recruited from gambling venues reported greater gambling problems if they also experienced deficits in executive functioning, measured via the Trail Making Test. Study 2 replicated this finding and demonstrated that problem gambling is associated with increased depression among older ad
