Accumulation of passively transferred primed T cells independently of their antigen specificity following central nervous system trauma.

The central nervous system (CNS) enjoys a unique relationship with the immune system. Under non-pathological conditions, T cells move through the CNS but do not accumulate there. CNS trauma has been shown to trigger a response to CNS self-antigens such as myelin basic protein (MBP). Here, we examined whether the injured CNS tissue undergoes changes that permit T cell accumulation. We found that injury to CNS white matter, such as the optic nerve, led to a transiently increased accumulation of T cells (between days 3 and 21). In Lewis rats with unilaterally injured optic nerves, systemic admini

Burn induced nervous system morbidity among burn and non-burn trauma patients compared with non-injured people.

OBJECTIVE: Burns cause acute damage to the peripheral nervous system with published reports identifying that neurological changes after injury remain for a prolonged period. To shed some light on potential mechanisms, we assessed injury etiology and patterns of nervous system morbidity after injury by comparing long-term hospital admissions data of burns patients and other non-burn trauma patients with uninjured people. METHODS: Linked hospital and death data of a burn patient cohort (n=30,997) in Western Australia during the period 1980-2012 were analysed along with two age and gender freque

The Effect of Surgical Trauma in the Nasal Cavity on the Behavior in the Open Field and the Autonomic Nervous System of Rats.

In this article, the effect of surgical damage to the nasal mucosa in rats under the action of general anesthesia was investigated. The motor activity and heart rate variability (HRV) of rats were studied before and 2 days after the surgery. After surgical exposure, motor activity decreased, the time of fading and grooming increased, VLF increased, and HF decreased. Surgical trauma of the nasal septum in rats at the early postoperative stage promotes a pronounced stress response in the form of a sharp shift in the balance of the autonomic nervous system towards the sympathetic level and causes

The effect of central nervous system depressant, stimulant and hallucinogenic drugs on injury severity in patients admitted for trauma.

OBJECTIVE: The effect of drugs other than alcohol on severity of trauma remains unclear. Pooled data analyses in previous studies that grouped substances with opposite effects on the central nervous system (CNS) may have masked the influence of substances on injury severity. The aim was to analyze the effect of stimulant, hallucinogenic and depressant drugs other than alcohol on injury severity in trauma patients. METHODS: The presence of alcohol, stimulant drugs (cocaine, amphetamines and methamphetamines), depressant drugs (benzodiazepines, opiates, methadone and barbiturates) and hallucino

Modeling Latent Dynamics of the Autonomic Nervous System in Response to Trauma Recall and Non-Invasive Vagus Nerve Stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a person-specific dynamic modeling approach to quantify the time course of multiple peripheral markers of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in response to acute stressors and potential stress-reducing interventions. METHODS: We curated data (N = 50 participants) from a double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial of non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation (nVNS) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). For each participant, a multi-input, multi-output, linear state space model (SSM) was trained on $\sim$3500 s of cardiovascular and respiratory marker time series data a

[Morphologic criteria for assessing of the etiology of birth trauma and dyscirculatory damage to the central nervous system (CNS) in the perinatal period].

The stages of the pathology examination necessary for establishing the diagnosis of the delivery trauma are considered. The emphasis is laid on the importance of studying the area of periostal congestion, the character of the skull bone dislocation and symptoms of the brain compression for the conclusion about the genesis of the intracranial lesions as well as for the evaluation of delivery and the quality of the obstetric help. It is shown how, by means of rules established by the author, it is possible to predict the location of the intracranial haemorrhages before opening the skull. It is s

Trauma to the nervous system and its sequelae in a one-year birth cohort followed up to the age of 14 years.

The one-year birth cohort of 12 058 children, 96% of all children born in the two northernmost provinces of Finland, Oulu and Lapland, in 1966 was studied prospectively up to the age of 14 years. During this period 14 children, 1.2 per thousand, were lost from the follow-up. Data on development, mortality, and morbidity were collected prospectively by means of questionnaires and from various registers, the most important of which was the National Hospital Discharge Register. A total of 299 cases of trauma to the nervous system (skull fracture, cerebral contusion, concussion, fracture of the ve

Elemental Mapping in a Preclinical Animal Model Reveals White Matter Copper Elevation in the Acute Phase of Central Nervous System Trauma.

Understanding the chemical events following trauma to the central nervous system could assist in identifying causative mechanisms and potential interventions to protect neural tissue. Here, we apply a partial optic nerve transection model of injury in rats and use synchrotron X-ray fluorescence microscopy (XFM) to perform elemental mapping of metals (K, Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn) and other related elements (P, S, Cl) in white matter tracts. The partial optic nerve injury model and spatial precision of microscopy allow us to obtain previously unattained resolution in mapping elemental changes in response

Trauma-related dissociation and the autonomic nervous system: a systematic literature review of psychophysiological correlates of dissociative experiencing in PTSD patients.

Background: Neurophysiological models link dissociation (e.g. feeling detached during or after a traumatic event) to hypoarousal. It is currently assumed that the initial passive reaction to a threat may coincide with a blunted autonomic response, which constitutes the dissociative subtype of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Objective: Within this systematic review we summarize research which evaluates autonomic nervous system activation (e.g. heart rate, blood pressure) and dissociation in PTSD patients to discern the validity of current neurophysiological models of trauma-related hypoa

[The neurologic diseases].

Neurologic diseases have important social and economic repercussions. The economic cost related to medications, caretakers, and therapists is evident, as well as the impact the disease may cause on the family. Epilepsy is the most frequent cause of medical care at the out-patient service of the Manuel Velasco Suárez National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery (NINN), in Mexico City and the estimated annual prevalence of this disease is 5.9 per 1,000 inhabitants. Parkinson's disease, the most representative of movement disorders, affects 20% of the populating aged > 65 years. Depression an

Bilirubin-induced neurological damage.

The incidence of the neurological damage of due to severe neonatal jaundice is increasing mainly due to early discharge from the hospital. However the molecular mechanisms at the basis of the neurological damage are still largely unknown. We here summarize what is known and what is not yet known on how bilirubin may cause cellular damage to selective regions of the brain. This may hopefully help to develop diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for a more effective handling of this invalidating condition.

Enhancing Rehabilitative Therapies with Vagus Nerve Stimulation.

Pathological neural activity could be treated by directing specific plasticity to renormalize circuits and restore function. Rehabilitative therapies aim to promote adaptive circuit changes after neurological disease or injury, but insufficient or maladaptive plasticity often prevents a full recovery. The development of adjunctive strategies that broadly support plasticity to facilitate the benefits of rehabilitative interventions has the potential to improve treatment of a wide range of neurological disorders. Recently, stimulation of the vagus nerve in conjunction with rehabilitation has eme

Neurological and neurourological complications of electrical injuries.

Electrical injury can affect any system and organ. Central nervous system (CNS) complications are especially well recognised, causing an increased risk of morbidity, while peripheral nervous system (PNS) complications, neurourological and cognitive and psychological abnormalities are less predictable after electrical injuries. PubMed was searched for English language clinical observational, retrospective, review and case studies published in the last 30 years using the key words: electrical injury, electrocution, complications, sequelae, neurological, cognitive, psychological, urological, neur

Nerve Injuries in Total Knee Arthroplasty.

Nerve injury is one of the potential complications of total knee arthroplasty. The extent of the injury includes motor and sensory dysfunction, either temporary or permanent. Although the consequences of nerve injury may be dramatic, the probability of occurrence during the course of primary knee arthroplasty is low, around 0.12% to 0.4%. Local dressing removal and knee flexion are imperative, and the initial investigations include ultrasound or MRI and nerve conduction studies. The extent of recovery depends on the type and severity of the initial nerve palsy; however, most patients are expec

A Perspective on Hormonal Contraception Usage in Central Nervous System Injury.

Naturally occurring life stages in women are associated with changes in the milieu of endogenous ovarian hormones. Women of childbearing age may be exposed to exogenous ovarian hormone(s) because of their use of varying combinations of estrogen and progesterone hormones-containing oral contraceptives (OC; also known as "the pill"). If women have central nervous system (CNS) injury such as spinal cord injury (SCI) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) during their childbearing age, they are likely to retain their reproductive capabilities and may use OC. Many deleterious side effects of long-term OC

Roles of neuronal toll-like receptors in neuropathic pain and central nervous system injuries and diseases.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are innate immune receptors that are expressed in immune cells as well as glia and neurons of the central and peripheral nervous systems. They are best known for their role in the host defense in response to pathogens and for the induction of inflammation in infectious and non-infectious diseases. In the central nervous system (CNS), TLRs modulate glial and neuronal functions as well as innate immunity and neuroinflammation under physiological or pathophysiological conditions. The majority of the studies on TLRs in CNS pathologies investigated their overall contribut
