Small- and large-calibre ureteroscopes: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review and meta-analyse the available evidence comparing perioperative outcomes between small- (≤6.3/7.5 F) and large-calibre (≥7.5/9.8 F) ureteroscopes. METHODS: A literature search of MEDLINE/PubMed, and Scopus was performed prior to March 2026 according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The endpoints of interest were stone-free rates (SFRs), overall complications, and operative time. Study quality and risk of bias were evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and the Revised Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool f

Crowdsourcing Evaluation of Ureteroscopic Videos Using the Post-Ureteroscopic Lesion Scale to Assess Ureteral Injury.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that crowdsourcing assessments could be applied to the Postureteroscopic Lesion Scale (PULS) for ureteral injury. METHODS: At a single institution, we prospectively digitally recorded 14 ureters at the terminal portion of standard ureteroscopic procedures. Each recording was reviewed by 10 global experts to determine a mean PULS score. Following training, the Crowd-Sourced Assessment of Technical Skills, C-SATS® (C-SATS, Inc., Seattle, WA) platform was used to obtain crowd-based reviews. The mean crowd PULS scores was determined using the linear mi

Comparison of a single-use, digital flexible ureteroscope with a reusable, fiberoptic ureteroscope for management of patients with urolithiasis.

OBJECTIVES: Ureteroscopy is one of the commonest procedures performed to manage urolithiasis. Flexible ureteroscopy has been traditionally based on reusable, fiber-optic ureteroscopes. Technology advancements permitted the development of single-use scopes with digital image. The aim of this study is to compare efficacy and safety between a reusable, fiberoptic ureteroscope with a single-use, digital scope. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We collected data based on chart review from a prospectively collected database on a tertiary, high-volume hospital in Greece. Baseline, perioperative and postoperativ

Single use flexible ureteroscopes: a review of current technologies and cost effectiveness analysis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Flexible ureteroscopy (fURS) has evolved into both diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. Our review discusses the cost-effectiveness of single use flexible ureteroscopes (su-fURS) and the use of these instruments in routine urological practice. RECENT FINDINGS: There are studies which support the use of su-fURS with an argument of both cost and clinical utility over reusable flexible ureteroscopes (ru-fURS). However, the cost may vary across countries, hence is difficult to compare the results based on the current literature. Perhaps therefore there is a role for hybrid st

Ureteroscopic stone management in prepubertal children.

Ureteroscopy for treating ureteric stones in prepubertal children has become more common with the advent of smaller endoscopes. We retrospectively reviewed our experience with ureteroscopy for ureteric stone in this cohort of patients. During the period Jan 2001 and June 2005, we performed 22 ureteroscopic procedures in 20 children. Ureteroscopy was done in a manner similar to that in adults. Ureteral dilatation was done in all cases. A stent was placed postoperatively if there was significant stone burden, ureteral trauma, impaction and edema of ureteric orifice. Of the 20 children, 18 were m

Ureteroscopic surgery: changing times and perspectives.

Ureteroscopy developed as an extension of cystoscopic techniques into the upper urinary tract with smaller, rigid, and flexible endoscopes. Smaller working instruments have made therapeutic procedures possible. Ureteroscopy has become the technique of choice to diagnose and treat benign essential hematuria and has a major role in treating ureteropelvic junction obstruction, upper tract neoplasms, and calculi. Finally, there is a need for smaller and more effective endoscopes and working devices.

Ureteroscopic evaluation in renal transplant recipients.

Percutaneous access and antegrade intervention have been the gold standard for the management of renal and ureteral complications in the renal transplant patient. We reviewed 540 consecutive renal allografts performed between July 1991 and September 1996 to determine the feasibility and morbidity of diagnostic and therapeutic ureteroscopy in renal allograft ureters. Of these, 14 patients (2.5%) had indications for endoscopic intervention of the allograft ureter. Four patients had obstructive ureteral calculi, three had migrated double-pigtail stents, three had persistent suspicious urinary cyt

Transurethral ureteroscopic retrieval of ureteric stones.

This report documents our initial experience in the transurethral retrieval of ureteric stones using the rigid ureteroscope. Ten patients are included. Half of the stones were located in the lower one-third of the ureter and half in the upper two-thirds. They varied in size from 5 to 10 mm in diameter. Seven were successfully extracted at the first attempt using stone baskets under direct vision. Of the remaining 3, one was retrieved at a second ureteroscopy, one was fragmented and subsequently passed and one required percutaneous nephroscopy for its removal from the renal pelvis. It is conclu

Paraureteral calculi caused by ureteroscopic perforation.

OBJECTIVES: Ureteroscopy has become an effective and safe procedure for treatment of ureteral calculi. Formation of strictures are considered long-term complications with a low incidence. This report focuses on the incidence of strictures in cases of calculi pushed or flushed retroperitoneally alongside the ureter because of iatrogenic ureteral perforation. METHODS: Fifteen consecutive patients with paraureteral calculi caused by ureteroscopic perforation were observed. An excretory urogram was performed after a mean of 22.5 months, with a range of 9 to 54 months. In all patients, a stent was

The use of the flexible ureteroscope in the Stamey urethropexy.

Stamey endoscopic suspension of the bladder neck is a reliable technique for treatment of female urinary stress incontinence; however, inadvertent passage of the suture into the bladder lumen must be recognized by the surgeon. The use of a flexible ureteroscope through a suprapubic sheath allows for continuous visualization of the bladder lumen during passage of the needles, and achieves greater control and facility in performing the procedure.

[Transurethral ureterolithotripsy using a rigid ureteroscope].

Eighty patients with ureteral stones underwent transurethral ureterolithotripsy using a rigid ureteroscope. In 68 of the patients (85%), the stones were removed successfully. Most of the 12 failures were removed by a percutaneous approach. The main complications of transurethral ureterolithotripsy were high fever (35%), ureteral injury (10%) and ureteral stricture (1.6%). Ureteroscopic procedures are thought to be useful in stone removal and diagnostic evaluation of abnormality of upper urinary tract.

Shaft stiffness heterogeneity in single-use flexible ureteroscopes: implications for maneuverability and robotic applications.

PURPOSE: Shaft-level mechanical behavior of single-use flexible ureteroscopes (su-fURS) remains poorly defined despite its relevance to maneuverability and force transmission during retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS). This study aimed to quantify axial and bending stiffness across six contemporary su-fURS and to evaluate whether nominal shaft diameter predicts mechanical performance. METHODS: Standardized benchtop testing was performed under controlled laboratory conditions. Axial stiffness was measured using a vertical tension setup, while effective bending stiffness was assessed using a h
