Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP) is an immune-mediated systemic vasculitis generally found in children. The standard manifestations of HSP are palpable purpura, arthritis, abdominal pain, and renal complications. Although less common, there are significant urological manifestations associated with HSP. The primary objective of this review is to encourage better understanding and management of HSP by emphasizing the common and rare manifestations of HSP, how they are diagnosed, and the latest treatment options for mild to severe complications. Medline searches of HSP and its urological manifestat

The tethered cord is the fixation of the cord resulting in stretching as growth occurs. In this paper, three cases of tethered cord with symptoms related to the urinary tract were presented. In the first case, a 12-year-old girl presenting with abdominal pain and urinary incontinence had bilateral hydronephrosis and neurogenic bladder due to a tethered cord without having any other neuropathological manifestation. In the second case, an eight-year-old girl presented with enuresis and a mass in her back was found to have a lipomyomeningocele, hyperactive tendon reflexes in the lower limbs and p

Kindler syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive skin disorder. It results from mutation of the FERM domain containing kindlin-1 (FERMT1) that leads to loss of function of kindlin-1, which plays a role in keratinocyte adhesion, polarization, proliferation, and migration. It is characterized by skin blistering, photosensitivity, progressive poikiloderma, and skin atrophy. The mucosae genitourinary system is commonly affected. The urological manifestations include meatal stenosis, urethral stricture, phimosis, and scarring of the glans penis. Skin biopsy with genetic analysis is the gold standard

STUDY DESIGN: Report of an epidermoid cyst with intramedullary localization.
OBJECTIVE: To describe an atypical presentation of intramedullary epidermoid cyst.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Intramedullary epidermoid cysts are rare entities with a marked variability in the clinical presentation, essentially of neurological pertinence.
METHODS: Case report of a spinal epidermoid cyst in a 13-year-old girl presenting with urological symptoms: she had a 12-month history of recurrent low urinary tract infections, urinary frequency and nocturnal enuresis. A urodynamic evaluation was performed and s

The tethered spinal cord is an entity with potentially grave neurourological implications. Presenting urological symptoms include incontinence, symptomatic urinary tract infections and stool soiling. These symptoms may be the first to herald a tethered cord. The patients with previously repaired myelodysplastic defects are particularly prone to development of this lesion. We correlated urological history with preoperative and postoperative cystometry in 20 myelodysplastic children. In this study we noted that clinical symptomatology and urodynamic parameters improved in 60 per cent of those ch

To determine the character and prevalence of bladder dysfunction among persons with a history of polio, we conducted a survey of randomly selected polio survivors. The survey solicited information on the acute episode of polio and the nature of late-onset neurologic symptoms that could be attributed to postpolio syndrome. There were 242 female and 88 male respondents to the study. Symptoms attributable to postpolio syndrome were present in 87.2% of female subjects and 73.9% of male subjects. Respondents with postpolio syndrome had a significantly greater prevalence of urologic symptoms than se

We analyzed the renal radiographic changes in the sickle hemoglobinopathies in 92 patients, in 70 of whom the specific hemoglobin type was documented by electrophoresis. The following conclusions have been drawn: (1) Approximately 50% of patients with SS hemoglobin have renal enlargement (both on roentgenograms and at autopsy), while only a small proportion of patients with the other hemoglobinopathies show renal enlargement; (2) slightly more than one half of patients with each type of hemoglobinopathy have calyceal changes; and (3) these calyceal changes do not fall into a specific pattern w

Wegener granulomatosis is a disease characterized by necrotizing granulomatous angiitis involving the upper and lower respiratory tracts and the kidneys. The introduction of cyclophosphamide in the treatment of Wegener granulomatosis has dramatically altered the rapidly fatal course of the disease and has altered our thinking regarding its management. Recently we have cared for 3 patients who demonstrated a dramatic spectrum of urinary tract pathology related to Wegener granulomatosis. The cases presented offer three points for consideration by the urologist: (1) the manifestations of the dise

Polyarteritis nodosa is an unusual condition that infrequently presents with signs and symptoms essentially confined to the urinary system. Such a case necessitating bilateral nephrectomy owing to hemorrhage is described. The pathologic findings, pathophysiology and etiology of the condition as well as treatment by renal transplatation are discussed.

The association of insipidus diabetes, diabetes mellitus, optic atrophy and deafness is known as the Wolfram syndrome. This paper contributes two case reports with significant urological sings and symptoms associated (ureterohydronephrosis, neurogenic bladder) both studied from a radiological and urodynamic point of view, with comments on the probable origin of the urological alternatives as well as their evolution, which was favourable after treatment with antibiotics and intermittent vesical catheterism.

OBJECTIVE: Lynch syndrome (LS) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disorder resulting from germline mutation in at least one of the four mismatch repair genes or in EPCAM gene. From a clinical perspective, LS patients exhibit an increased predisposition to multiple primary malignancies and early age of onset compared to general population. We aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of all the genitourinary manifestations of LS, focusing on incidence, diagnosis, clinical features, therapeutic strategies, and screening protocols.
METHODS: Previous literature was assessed through Medline, Scop

The mosaic karyotype XO/XY is expressed by a spectrum of genital phenotypes, ranging from normal male through ambiguous genitalia to normal female. The urologist may see some of these patients because of the following clinical presentations: 1) ambiguous genitalia with a chromatin-negative buccal smear, 2) hypospadias with cryptorchidism or 3) cryptorchidism with müllerian remnants, discovered unexpectedly during inguinal operations. Reliable karyotyping is mandatory for diagnosis of XO/XY patients. Management should include laparotomy with excision of any intra-abdominal gonads (testis and/or

A long-term study of 17 patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria revealed an unexpectedly high incidence of functional and anatomic renal abormalities. All patients demonstrated varying degrees of hematuria and proteinuria distinct from hemoglobinuria. All patients also had granular casts in multiple urinalyses. Evaluation of renal function revealed hyposthenuria, abnormal tubular function and declining creatinine clearance. Radiologically, one or more of these demonstrated enlarged kidneys, renal cortical infarcts and thinning, papillary necrosis, acute renal atrophy, retroperitoneal

Cryptococcus neoformans classically causes pulmonary and central nervous system (CNS) infection in immunocompromised hosts and can lead to disseminated disease. Two cases of atypical cryptococcal infection are presented-an elderly Human Immunodeficiency Virus- (HIV-) negative male with a urinary source of infection and a young HIV-positive male with bone marrow infiltration complicated by haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). A literature review of systemic cryptococcal infections involving the genitourinary tract and bone marrow was performed. These cases highlight the importance of clin

OBJECTIVE: To describe the urologic manifestations of Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD). ECD is a rare multisystem disorder of non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. In addition to classic long bone involvement, the retroperitoneum is a well-established site of disease infiltration. Herein, we present the urologic manifestations and outcomes of ECD in a large series of patients.
METHODS: We identified 47 patients diagnosed with ECD between 1996 and 2012 at our institution. The medical records and imaging for these patients were reviewed for urologic involvement, including perirenal soft tissue encase
