As a direct consequence of the generally larger body size of the male, it is reasonable to expect the adult human vertebral column to display sexual dimorphism. However, there is a distinct paucity of literature concerning sex-related variation in vertebral dimensions. This study examines the accuracy with which sex may be predicted from vertebral body diameters. In a sample selected from a documental skeletal series, sex could be correctly assigned with an accuracy approaching 90%. This degree of sexual differentiation is of value for both the forensic and archeological identification of huma

PURPOSE: Since the introduction of vertebral body tethering (VBT) for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), a variety of post-operative chest drainage systems have been utilized. Most surgeons use formal chest tubes with a Pleur-evac, while others use smaller bulb suction drains (e.g., Blake drain). In addition, some centers utilize pleural closure. This multicenter study evaluates whether drain type or pleural closure impact perioperative and 90 day complication rates.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted from three institutions with established VBT programs. All preoperative, peri

Percutaneous vertebral body injection procedures currently are used to stabilize and reinforce weakened or fractured bone resulting from metastatic disease and severe osteoporosis. Both vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty can reinforce the structure of a vertebral body and provide pain relief, but the procedures have technical differences. Kyphoplasty improves vertebral height to varying degrees in nearly three quarters of patients. Kyphosis is improved more effectively when the procedure is performed within 3 months from the onset of fracture pain. To date, it is unknown whether vertebroplasty wit

Autografts and allogeneous bone grafts as well as cages are used for the reconstruction of the anterior column after corpectomy. Recently, expandable cages for vertebral body replacement have been developed. Based on our own experience, the purpose of this study was to summarize the available biomechanical and clinical data of expandable corpectomy cages and to compare it with established fixation techniques. If used correctly, expandable cages offer several surgical advantages in comparison to non-expandable cages. However there were no significant differences between the biomechanical proper

Recent findings suggest that vertebral osteophytes increase the resistance of the spine to compression. However, the role of vertebral osteophytes on the biomechanical response of the spine under fast dynamic compression, up to failure, is unclear. Seventeen human spine specimens composed of three vertebrae (from T5-T7 to T11-L1) and their surrounding soft tissues were harvested from nine cadavers, aged 77 to 92 years. Specimens were imaged using quantitative computer tomography (QCT) for medical observation, classification of the intervertebral disc degeneration (Thomson grade) and measuremen

STUDY DESIGN: The axial length of the vertebral canal and the anterior aspect of the vertebrae were measured in 36 skeletons, 15 with probable idiopathic scoliosis.
OBJECTIVES: To compare the discrepancy in length of the vertebral canal and the anterior spinal column in skeletons having probable idiopathic scoliosis with the degree of deformity.
SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND DATA: In idiopathic scoliosis, the vertebral bodies rotate toward the convexity of the curve, whereas the vertebral canal tends to retain a midline position. The vertebral canal therefore will be relatively short. The degree of

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the use of expandable titanium cages for vertebral body replacement in the thoracolumbar spine has been well established for the treatment of tumors, unstable traumatic lesions, or posttraumatic deformity. Collapse of the implant into the vertebral body remains a point of concern. A biomechanical compression test was designed to assess implant subsidence for a newly developed prototype for vertebral body replacement in the thoracolumbar spine using human cadaveric lumbar vertebrae. The objective of this study was to compare the compressive performance of a new expa

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: A vertebral compression fracture (VCF) can be found in trauma, osteoporosis, and tumor pathology. The most frequent is the pathological fracture in osteoporotic vertebrae in the elderly. Percutaneous techniques of vertebral cementation allow treatment of A1-A2 AO spine fractures, improving pain control and spine stabilization and decreasing mobility and mortality. Traditionally, the selection of patients is fundamental for spine surgery success, with an absolute contraindication being posterior wall involvement (A3-A4 AO spine fractures) or VCF with a loss of height

UNLABELLED: Purpose of the study was to demonstrate the effectiveness of expanding a fractured vertebral body by transpedicular dilatation and stenting. 7 human cadaveric vertebral bodies from L2 to L5 underwent axia compression until a vertebral burst fracture was provoked. Then, by bilateral transpedicular approach, balloon-catheters were introduced, which were armed with stents, usually used for angioplasty. The catheters were inflated with radiolucent fluid and the stents expanded under radiologic control. After expansion, the balloon was deflated and removed, the stents resting inside the

BACKGROUND: Vertebral body stenting systems (VBSs) are superior to balloon kyphoplasty for performing vertebral augmentation and height restoration. However, VBS may likely result in more material-related complications that have been under-reported. Here, an 84-year-old female's vertebral stents "toppled over" before the filling cement was fully applied, thus necessitating an additional posterior fusion.
CASE DESCRIPTION: An 84-year-old female presented with low back pain after a fall. Dynamic standing and decubitus X-rays revealed a vertebral compression fracture at T12 resulting in an intra

Management of osseous metastatic disease has advanced over the years with the advent of ablation and interventional technologies. Painful metastatic vertebral body lesions have been particularly studied in the recent years, as open surgery is usually reserved for emergent cord compression. Minimally invasive options in managing these lesions include percutaneous vertebral augmentation, percutaneous ablation, and embolization. This article will include an overview of these procedures including the most recent literature.

Brucellosis is caused by gram-negative, aerobic, non-motile, facultative, intracellular coccobacilli belonging to the genus Brucella. A 50-year-old man working as an employee was admitted to neurosurgery clinic with severe low back, radicular right leg pain and hypoesthesia in right L4-5 dermatomes for 2 months. Brucella tube agglutination (Wright) test was positive in serum sample of the patient with a titer of 1/640. Brucella melitensis was isolated from blood culture. X-ray and MRI of the lomber spine showed massive collapse of L4 vertebral body. Neural tissue was decompressed and then post

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: During clinical work, we have seen increases in vertebral body height associated with vertebroplasty, but our literature search revealed no reports as to how often and to what degree those increases occur. The purpose of this study was to document the frequency and degree of changes in vertebral body height after vertebroplasty.
METHODS: The heights of 85 vertebral bodies in 37 patients were measured before and after vertebroplasty. In addition, one adjacent vertebral body was measured in each patient as a control. Twenty-six patients had compression fractures in the t

An osteoid osteoma in the anterior part of the body of the fourth cervical vertebra occurred in a 22-year-old female. The patient's main complaint was neck pain and occasional numbness of the extremities. The pain was relieved by analgesics. Plain radiography and a 99Tcm MDP bone scan showed a non-specific abnormality. CT suggested the pathological diagnosis with reasonable certainty. The unusual location of the lesion and the role of various diagnostic modalities are discussed and the literature reviewed.

STUDY DESIGN: This prospective study evaluates the use of transpedicular biopsy in obtaining diagnostic tissue from vertebral body lesions.
OBJECTIVE: To report the authors' experience of all (N = 32) percutaneous transpedicular biopsies performed between 1990-1994.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Previous articles have discussed the value of open biopsy of the vertebral body using a Craig needle. A large series of closed percutaneous transpedicular biopsies have not been reported.
METHODS: The authors evaluated 32 patients (26 outpatients, six inpatients) who underwent transpedicular biopsy fo

Primary systemic amyloidosis is a rare cause of vertebral collapse. We describe a patient with extensive systemic involvement who developed collapse of vertebral bodies L1 and L3 in quick succession. Primary amyloid was found on biopsy of L1, but plain radiography, isotope bone scan and magnetic resonance imaging showed no specific features.
