The vestibular aqueduct (VA) and endolymphatic sac were examined topographically in 29 human ears with idiopathic endolymphatic hydrops. When compared with 34 control ears, there was found to be a slight but statistically significant reduction in the width (P less than 0.005) and length (P less than 0.05) of the vestibular aqueduct. A small hypoplastic endolymphatic sac was found in three of the ears with hydrops but was also present in one control ear. It would appear that a marked reduction in sac size is not a consistent feature in ears with endolymphatic hydrops.

This report describes the case history of two male siblings with sensorineural hearing loss and an enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA). Sibling 1 presented with a history of intermittent self-limiting ataxia and hearing loss at the age of 25 months and sibling 2 presented with a similar history at the age of 18 months. MRI showed an enlarged endolymphatic duct and sac bilaterally in both children. Perchlorate discharge tests were positive in both infants leading to a diagnosis of Pendred syndrome. A number of conditions associated with EVA are discussed with a view to devising management strate

An enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) is one of the most commonly identified inner ear bony malformations in children with sensorineural hearing loss of unknown cause. Most previous reports have focused on hearing loss, but individuals with EVA may also experience paroxysmal vertigo lasting minutes to hours. We report the clinical vestibular features and vestibular function testing of two children and one adult with EVA who had a history of sensorineural hearing loss and presented to our Neurotology Clinic for the evaluation of episodic vertigo. All the patients had an antecedent history of pr

An enlarged vestibular aqueduct is a congenital disorder causing early onset and progressive hearing loss in children. This paper presents the audiological findings at first presentation and the audiological evolution in 10 consecutive cases presenting with hearing loss and showing a large vestibular aqueduct on imaging. The reported onset of the hearing loss is within the first few years of life. Most of the cases (80%) showed bilateral involvement. The sex ratio was 1. Patients presented on average at age 5 with a median hearing loss of 62 dB at the speech frequencies. The hearing loss was e

An enlarged vestibular aqueduct (LVA) is a common congenital inner ear anomaly responsible for some unusual vestibular and audiological symptoms. Most of the cases show bilateral early onset and progressive hearing loss in children. The gross appearance on CT scan of the inner ear is generally normal. However, precise measurements of the inner ear components reveal abnormal dimensions, which may account for the accompanying auditory and vestibular dysfunction. Despite extensive studies on hearing and the vestibular apparatus, saccular function is not studied. To our knowledge this is the first

The external aperture width of the vestibular aqueduct was measured in living subjects of various ages, with normal and diseased ears. Measurements were made from 3-dimensional reconstruction of CT images, and the developmental process was studied. The following results were obtained. i) In Menière's disease the external aperture was hypoplastic and its width significantly smaller than that in normal individuals and those with chronic otitis media, including children. ii) There were no significant differences between normal ears and ears with chronic otitis media in either adults or children.

The right vestibular aqueduct was obliterated in guinea pigs, chinchillas, and monkeys, and the right cochlear aqueduct and both the right vestibular and right cochlear aqueducts were obliterated in guinea pigs and chinchilas. Changes in auditory acuity were monitored by determining averaged temporal-response thresholds, and temporal-bone histologic studies were performed. Obliteration of the vestibular aqueduct or both the vestibular and cochlear aqueducts consistently produced endolymphatic hydrops in guinea pigs. In these animals, the auditory acuity gradually deteriorated. The low tones co

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between torticollis and enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA).
METHODS: An online/phone survey was administered to parents of 133 children diagnosed with the following disorders: EVA, GJB2 (Connexin 26) mutations associated congenital hearing loss and epistaxis (control). The survey included questions regarding symptoms of torticollis, vertigo, and hearing loss.
RESULTS: Patients with EVA had a 10-fold greater odds of having torticollis than controls (31% vs. 4%; OR = 10.6; 95% CI: 2.9, 39.2). No patients with GJB2 had a reported history of torticollis. T

A controversy exists concerning whether or not roentgenographic narrowing or nonvisualization of the vestibular aqueduct is a specific sign for Meniere's disease. Of 190 ears that were evaluated, abnormal aqueducts were seen in 42.9% of ears with Meniere's disease, 45.4% of contralateral, noninvolved ears from patients with Meniere's disease, 41.3% of ears with diseases other than Meniere's disease, 30.4% of ears with no disease, and 51.6% of normal ears. Narrowing or nonvisualization of the vestibular aqueduct is a nonspecific roentgenographic sign that is seen in diseased, as well as in norm

OBJECTIVE: Enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) is a congenital condition that can lead to various outcomes in pediatric patients including hearing loss and vestibular dysfunction. Our goal was to critically appraise the literature on the proportion of patients with EVA who report vestibular dysfunction, determine relevant risk factors for the development of these symptoms, and describe vestibular tests and interventions used to improve outcomes.
METHODS: A systematic review was performed in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. We queried the EMBASE, Ovid Medline, and Cochrane Library databas

OBJECTIVE: Enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) is the most common radiographic finding in children diagnosed with congenital sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Many institutions use the Cincinnati criteria for diagnosis: width ≥2.0 mm at the operculum and/or ≥1.0 mm at the midpoint. Our goals are to expand our understanding of EVA by examining the audiometric and auditory brainstem response (ABR) characteristics of a large population of children with EVA and hearing loss.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review.
SETTING: Tertiary-care children's hospital.
PATIENTS: All children diagnosed wi

Background: Wideband tympanometry (WBT) has the potential to distinguish various mechanical middle ear and inner ear pathologies noninvasively. This study investigated the diagnostic value of WBT in the diagnosis of enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA). Methods: The absorbance and resonance frequency (RF) of patients with EVA (40 ears, 25 patients) and matched population controls (39 ears, 28 subjects) were compared, alongside receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Correlations between VA width and RF were also examined. Results: Patients with EVA had higher absorbance at low frequenc

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between vestibular aqueduct (VA) morphology and Meniere's disease (MD) using ultrahigh-resolution computed tomography (U-HRCT).
METHODS: Retrospective data were collected from 34 patients (40 ears) diagnosed with MD in our hospital who underwent temporal bone U-HRCT with isotropic 0.05-mm resolution, magnetic resonance with gadolinium-enhanced, and pure-tone audiometry; 34 age- and sex-matched controls (68 ears) who underwent U-HRCT were also included. VA patency was qualitatively classified as locally not shown (grade 1), locally faintly shown (grad

INTRODUCTION: An enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA) results in hearing loss which is often progressive and heterogenous, the long-term natural history of which is not well understood. Patients born before the era of newborn hearing screening can present as adults with previously undiagnosed EVA.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients seen at a tertiary adult academic otologic clinic from 2004 to 2012 were reviewed and cases of EVA were identified.
RESULTS: Adult EVA was found to present with a mixed progressive hearing loss with absent stapedial reflexes.
CONCLUSION: Enlarged ves

OBJECTIVE: To analyze clinical manifestation of patients from two families with dilated vestibular aqueduct syndrome (DVAS). Their genotypic patterns were discriminated with the genetic testing methods for PDS gene.
METHOD: The twin sisters from pedigree and the brother and sister from pedigree 2 all suffered from sensorineural hearing loss. All patients from these two families were confirmed to have enlarged vestibular aqueduct by temporal bone CT scan. Exon 7+8 and their flanking area sequences were analyzed by direct sequencing. All other exons and their flanking sequences were screened by
