Three-dimensional visual feature representation in the primary visual cortex.

In the cat primary visual cortex, it is accepted that neurons optimally responding to similar stimulus orientations are clustered in a column extending from the superficial to deep layers. The cerebral cortex is, however, folded inside a skull, which makes gyri and fundi. The primary visual area of cats, area 17, is located on the fold of the cortex called the lateral gyrus. These facts raise the question of how to reconcile the tangential arrangement of the orientation columns with the curvature of the gyrus. In the present study, we show a possible configuration of feature representation in

Sustained visual cortex hyperexcitability in migraine with persistent visual aura.

Persistent aura without infarction, a rare migraine disorder, is defined by aura symptoms that persist for >1 week without radiological evidence of cerebral infarction. To unveil its pathophysiological mechanisms, this study used magnetoencephalography to characterize the visual cortex excitability in persistent aura by comparison with episodic and chronic migraine. We recruited six patients with persistent visual aura, 39 patients with episodic migraine [12 in ictal phase; 27 in interictal phase (with aura, n = 9; without aura, n = 18)], 18 patients with chronic migraine and 24 healthy contro

Lack of habituation in somatosensory cortex but not in visual cortex of ALS patients.

OBJECTIVE: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a multisystem degenerative disease with extra-motor components. In ALS, there is also hyperexcitability of extra-motor areas. Habituation is defined as ''a response decrement" caused by repeated stimulations. Studies on evoked potential habituation can be conducted to detect cortical excitability. This study aimed to explore lack of habituation in non-motor cortical structures in ALS. METHODS: Twenty-one ALS patients and 14 controls were enrolled. Recordings were obtained in 3 and 10 consecutive blocks (each containing 100 responses) during ri

Spontaneous Activity Patterns in Primary Visual Cortex Predispose to Visual Hallucinations.

UNLABELLED: According to theoretical frameworks casting perception as inference, vision results from the integration of bottom-up visual input with top-down expectations. Under conditions of strongly degraded sensory input, this may occasionally result in false perceptions in the absence of a sensory signal, also termed "hallucinations." Here, we investigated whether spontaneous prestimulus activity patterns in sensory circuits, which may embody a participant's prior expectations, predispose the observer toward false perceptions. Specifically, we used fMRI to investigate whether the representa

Sequential visual stimuli increase high frequency power in the visual cortex.

Today, flickering full-field visual stimulation is used to increase neuronal oscillations for a variety of research or therapeutic purposes. We propose spatially organized sequential visual flickering stimulation as a newer tool to circumvent the intrinsic low-pass filter nature of the vertebrate visual system, in order to increase the power of high frequency oscillations in the visual system. We show that spatially organized visual flickering can increase power in high frequencies (100 to 190 Hz) in the visual cortex of mice. Consequently, spatially organized sequential sensory stimulation sh

Visual paired-pulse stimulation reveals enhanced visual cortex excitability in migraineurs.

Migraine is a common ictal disorder with an interindividual heterogeneous characteristic, whose underlying mechanisms remain elusive. On the one hand migraine is associated with abnormal cortical hyperexcitability. On the other hand, studies reported lower amplitudes of visual-evoked potentials (VEPs) and concluded that low preactivation levels imply decreased excitability. Here we measured visual cortex excitability and paired-pulse suppression in subjects suffering from migraine without aura and in a group of aged- and gender-matched healthy subjects to address the relation between activatio

Beta oscillation dynamics in extrastriate cortex after removal of primary visual cortex.

The local field potential (LFP) in visual cortex is typically characterized by the following spectral pattern: before the onset of a visual stimulus, low-frequency oscillations (beta, 12-20 Hz) dominate, whereas during the presentation of a stimulus these oscillations diminish and are replaced by fluctuations at higher frequencies (gamma, >30 Hz). The origin of beta oscillations in vivo remains unclear, as is the basis of their suppression during visual stimulation. Here we investigate the contribution of ascending input from primary visual cortex (V1) to beta oscillation dynamics in extrastri

Rethinking category-selectivity in human visual cortex.

A wealth of studies report evidence that occipitotemporal cortex tessellates into 'category-selective' brain regions that are apparently specialized for representing ecologically important visual stimuli like faces, bodies, scenes, and tools. Here, we argue that while valuable insights have been gained through the lens of category-selectivity, a more complete view of visual function in occipitotemporal cortex requires centering the behavioral relevance of visual properties in real-world environments rather than stimulus category. Focusing on behavioral relevance challenges a simple mapping bet

Representation of visual landmarks in retrosplenial cortex.

The process by which visual information is incorporated into the brain's spatial framework to represent landmarks is poorly understood. Studies in humans and rodents suggest that retrosplenial cortex (RSC) plays a key role in these computations. We developed an RSC-dependent behavioral task in which head-fixed mice learned the spatial relationship between visual landmark cues and hidden reward locations. Two-photon imaging revealed that these cues served as dominant reference points for most task-active neurons and anchored the spatial code in RSC. This encoding was more robust after task acqu

Conceptual size representation in ventral visual cortex.

Recent findings suggest that visual objects may be mapped along the ventral occipitotemporal cortex according to their real-world size (Konkle and Oliva, 2012). It has been argued that such mapping does not reflect an abstract, conceptual size representation, but rather the visual or functional properties associated with small versus big real-world objects. To determine whether a more abstract conceptual size representation may affect visual cortical activation we used meaningless geometrical shapes, devoid of semantic or functional associations, which were associated with specific size repres

Microstimulation of visual cortex to restore vision.

This review argues that one reason why a functional visuo-cortical prosthetic device has not been developed to restore even minimal vision to blind individuals is because there is no animal model to guide the design and development of such a device. Over the past 8 years we have been conducting electrical microstimulation experiments on alert behaving monkeys with the aim of better understanding how electrical stimulation of the striate cortex (area V1) affects oculo- and skeleto-motor behaviors. Based on this work and upon review of the literature, we arrive at several conclusions: (1) As wit

Ocular integration in the human visual cortex.

Human striate cortex contains an orderly map of the contralateral visual field, which is distorted to make a disproportionate amount of tissue available for the representation of the macula. Engrafted on the retinotopic map is a system of alternating inputs known as ocular dominance columns. These columns consist of interleaved bands of geniculocortical afferents in layer 4C serving either the right eye or the left eye. They can be revealed in humans with a history of prior visual loss in one eye by processing striate cortex for cytochrome oxidase at autopsy. Because their geniculate input is

Visual Hallucinations in Psychosis: The Curious Absence of the Primary Visual Cortex.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Approximately one-third of patients with a psychotic disorder experience visual hallucinations (VH). While new, more targeted treatment options are warranted, the pathophysiology of VH remains largely unknown. Previous studies hypothesized that VH result from impaired functioning of the vision-related networks and impaired interaction between those networks, including a possible functional disconnection between the primary visual cortex (V1) and higher-order visual processing regions. Testing these hypotheses requires sufficient data on brain activation during actual

Evidence of dysfunction in the visual association cortex in visual snow syndrome.

Patients with visual snow syndrome (VS) suffer from a debilitating continuous visual disturbance of unknown mechanism. The present study tested the hypothesis of dysfunctional visual processing using visual evoked potentials. Eighteen patients were compared to age-matched migraineurs (M) and healthy controls (C) using 2-way analysis of variance with group (VS, M, C) and gender as factors. Visual evoked potentials from patients with VS demonstrated increased N145 latency (in milliseconds, VS: 152.7 ± 7.9 vs M: 145.3 ± 9.8 vs C: 145.5 ± 9.4; F = 3.28; p = 0.046) and reduced N75-P100 amplitudes (

Development of Activity in the Mouse Visual Cortex.

UNLABELLED: A comprehensive developmental timeline of activity in the mouse cortex in vivo is lacking. Understanding the activity changes that accompany synapse and circuit formation is important to understand the mechanisms by which activity molds circuits and would help to identify critical checkpoints for normal development. To identify key principles of cortical activity maturation, we systematically tracked spontaneous and sensory-evoked activity with extracellular recordings of primary visual cortex (V1) in nonanesthetized mice. During the first postnatal week (postnatal days P4-P7), V1

Origin of orientation tuning in the visual cortex.

The results of recent experiments have thrown new light on the neuronal connections underlying orientation-selective responses in the primary visual cortex of adult animals. The pattern of afferent input from the lateral geniculate nucleus to the cortex appears to be specific for orientation, while intracortical inhibitory connections appear to be non-specific in this respect. Experimental and theoretical studies have suggested that the development of cortical cell orientation tuning is an activity-dependent process.

[Neurons in the visual cortex of Microtus brandti].

Neurons were described in the visual Cortex of Microtus brandti, a Mongolian harmful rodent living in day-activity. We find following types of neurons in our Golgi-material: 1. spiny neurons: pyramidal and stellate neurons. 2. smooth or sparsely spined neurons: smooth, large neurons, sparsely spined small neurons with descending axons, sparsely spined neurons with ascending axons. Double-bouquet-, chandelier and neuroglioforme cells are not impregnated. There are no bipolare neurons (Martinotti cells) among the neurons with ascending axons. The small, sparsely spined neurons are not only in la

Preemptive gain control in primary visual cortex.

Neurons continuously adapt their response properties to their environment. In the visual cortex, this includes gain control processes such as contrast normalization, which matches neurons' limited dynamic response range to the prevailing contrasts. Contrast normalization converges to a state that is optimal for processing the current visual input but not for the new, unknown input that impinges on the retina after each eye movement. We hypothesized that this conflict between current (pre-saccadic) and future (post-saccadic) needs could be resolved by a preemptive reset of the contrast response

Optimal gamma-band entrainment of visual cortex.

Visual entrainment is a powerful and widely used research tool to study visual information processing in the brain. While many entrainment studies have focused on frequencies around 14-16 Hz, there is renewed interest in understanding visual entrainment at higher frequencies (e.g., gamma-band entrainment). Notably, recent groundbreaking studies have demonstrated that gamma-band visual entrainment at 40 Hz may have therapeutic effects in the context of Alzheimer's disease (AD) by stimulating specific neural ensembles, which utilize GABAergic signaling. Despite such promising findings, few studi

Local neuroplasticity in adult glaucomatous visual cortex.

The degree to which the adult human visual cortex retains the ability to functionally adapt to damage at the level of the eye remains ill-understood. Previous studies on cortical neuroplasticity primarily focused on the consequences of foveal visual field defects (VFD), yet these findings may not generalize to peripheral defects such as occur in glaucoma. Moreover, recent findings on neuroplasticity are often based on population receptive field (pRF) mapping, but interpreting these results is complicated in the absence of appropriate control conditions. Here, we used fMRI-based neural modeling
