Non-contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging for visualization and quantification of endovascular aortic prosthesis, their endoleaks and aneurysm sacs at 1.5 T.

PURPOSE: After an endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR), a follow-up at 1, 6 and every 12 months is recommended for remainder of the patient's life. The diagnostic standard methods for diagnosing endoleaks and visualization of aneurysms in EVAR-patients are: invasive digital subtraction angiography (DSA), contrast enhanced (CE) computed tomographic angiography (CE-CTA), and magnetic resonance angiography (CE-MRA). These techniques, however, require the use of iodine- or gadolinium-based contrast agents with rare, but possibly life threatening side effects such as renal impairment, thyroto

Visual Evoked Potential Recovery by Subretinal Implantation of Photoelectric Dye-Coupled Thin Film Retinal Prosthesis in Monkey Eyes With Macular Degeneration.

Retinal prosthesis or artificial retina is a promising modality of treatment for outer retinal degeneration, caused by primary and secondary loss of photoreceptor cells, in hereditary retinal dystrophy and age-related macular degeneration, respectively. Okayama University-type retinal prosthesis (OUReP) is a photoelectric dye-coupled polyethylene film which generates electric potential in response to light and stimulates nearby neurons. The dye-coupled films were implanted by vitreous surgery in the subretinal space of monkey eyes with macular degeneration which had been induced by cobalt chlo

Effects of extended powered knee prosthesis stance time via visual feedback on gait symmetry of individuals with unilateral amputation: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Establishing gait symmetry is a major aim of amputee rehabilitation and may be more attainable with powered prostheses. Though, based on previous work, we postulate that users transfer a previously-learned motor pattern across devices, limiting the functionality of more advanced prostheses. The objective of this study was to preliminarily investigate the effect of increased stance time via visual feedback on amputees' gait symmetry using powered and passive knee prostheses. METHODS: Five individuals with transfemoral amputation or knee disarticulation walked at their self-selected

Real-time visual feedback affects peak propulsive horizontal force and metabolic cost in individuals with unilateral transtibial amputation during walking.

Individuals with unilateral transtibial amputation (uTTA) using a passive-elastic energy storage and return (ESAR) prosthesis to walk have asymmetrical peak propulsive horizontal ground reaction force (hGRF) compared with nonamputees. Investigating and normalizing peak propulsive hGRF could be beneficial for individuals with uTTA, who experience a greater metabolic cost of walking and greater risk of developing secondary comorbidities compared with nonamputees. Use of the BiOM stance-phase battery-powered prosthesis can decrease peak propulsive hGRF asymmetry and the metabolic cost of walking

Retinal prostheses for the blind.

INTRODUCTION: Using artificial means to treat extreme vision impairment has come closer to reality during the past few decades. The goal of this research has been to create an implantable medical device that provides useful vision for those patients who are left with no alternatives. Analogous to the cochlear implants for some forms of hearing loss, these devices could restore useful vision by converting visual information into patterns of electrical stimulation that excite the remaining viable inner retinal neurons in patients with retinitis pigmentosa or age-related macular degeneration. Artificial vision through neuronal stimulation.

INTRODUCTION: The term visual prosthesis refers to any device capable of eliciting visual percepts in an individual through electrical stimulation of any part of the visual system. BACKGROUND: Blindness can be due to eye pathology or due to damage of the lateral geniculate or visual cortex. Eye pathology other than diseases that affect the cornea and lens are numerous and some of the leading causes are diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal detachment, glaucoma, and retinal vascular occlusions. The visual prosthesis can be divided into non-retinal and retinal approach

Traumatic aphakia treated with an iris prosthesis/intraocular lens or epikeratophakia.

OBJECTIVE: We retrospectively analyzed the visual results and postoperative complications associated with severely traumatized eyes in which aphakia was corrected with epikeratophakia or a sutured iris prosthesis/intraocular lens (IOL). METHODS: Fourteen eyes (14 patients) with traumatic aphakia and severe anterior segment complications were corrected either with epikeratophakia or a sutured iris prosthesis/IOL. All eyes lacked lens capsule or iris support for an IOL. The surgical technique of implanting an iris prosthesis/IOL employed transcleral suturing in the ciliary sulcus combined with

Inducing lateralized phosphenes over the occipital lobe using transcranial magnetic stimulation to navigate a virtual environment.

Electrical stimulation involving visual areas of the brain produces artificial light percepts called phosphenes. These visual percepts have been extensively investigated in previous studies involving intracortical microsimulation (ICMS) and serve as the basis for developing a visual prosthesis for the blind. Although advances have been achieved, many challenges still remain with implementing a functional ICMS for visual rehabilitation purposes. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the primary occipital lobe offers an alternative method to produce phosphenes non-invasively. A main chall

Visuomotor behaviors and performance in a dual-task paradigm with and without vibrotactile feedback when using a myoelectric controlled hand.

Prosthesis users allocate visual attention to their prosthetic hand while performing activities of daily living (ADLs), due to absence of sensory feedback. Dual-task assignments present competition for visual attention and may affect the performance of ADLs. Vibrotactile feedback (VTF) is a frequently-used method to provide prosthesis users with tactile feedback. However, the effect of adding VTF on visual attention and performance in a motor dual-task paradigm has not been investigated. Our aim was to compare visual attention and performance during ADLs in a motor dual-task paradigm when usin

[Anophthalmia and microphthalmia requires multidisciplinary care. Many of the children also have other medical problems].

Anophthalmia/microphthalmia (A/M) are rare congenital eye malformations. Early intervention with ocular prosthesis can stimulate orbital growth and prevent facial asymmetry. We reviewed medical records from 18 individuals with A/M (0.8-31 years) treated with ocular prosthesis at Sahlgrenska University Hospital between 2000 and 2012. A majority had other ocular findings. Seven had subnormal visual acuity in the fellow eye, one third were in contact with vision support services and half of the group wore glasses. Eleven individuals had extra-ocular findings such as cardiac defect, hearing impair

A retrospective multidimensional comparison of microprocessor and mechanical knee users: Analysis of quality of life and satisfaction with the prosthesis.

BACKGROUND: Despite the demonstrated greater efficacy of microprocessor knees (MPK) over mechanical knees (MK), the latter is still widely used by persons with transfemoral amputation. Besides motivations related to local insurance policies, quality of life (QoL) and satisfaction with the prosthesis play a key role in user preference. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to compare QoL and satisfaction in a large sample of MPK and MK users and to assess how these outcomes are explained by clinical and demographic characteristics. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. METHODS: The study was cond
