INTRODUCTION: Patients with neurodegenerative disorders resulting in progressive dysphagia often require gastrostomy. Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are crucial in presurgical evaluation; however, reports on pulmonary function in multiple system atrophy (MSA) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) are limited.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This single-center, retrospective study analyzed the PFT records from patients with MSA and PSP admitted between January 2012 and October 2023.
RESULTS: Data from 104 PFTs in 70 patients with MSA (21 MSA-P, 49 MSA-C) and 29 PFTs in 22 patients with PSP, showed

BACKGROUND: Home-monitoring of spirometry has the potential to improve care for patients with a motor neuron disease (MND) by enabling early detection of respiratory dysfunction and reducing travel burden. Our aim was to evaluate the validity and feasibility of home-monitoring vital capacity (VC) in patients with MND.
METHODS: We included 33 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, progressive muscular atrophy or primary lateral sclerosis who completed a 12-week home-monitoring protocol, consisting of 4-weekly unsupervised home assessments of VC and a functional rating scale. At baseline,

OBJECTIVES: The lateralised vocal fold of unilateral vocal fold paralysis (ULVFP) is unphysiological for expiration wherein vocal folds normally adduct to increase expiratory resistance and prevent small airway collapse. ULVFP may therefore impair ventilatory function and ventilatory volume. This study seeks to test whether vocal fold medialisation improves forced vital capacity (FVC).
DESIGN: Prospective inception cohort intervention study.
SETTING: Academic Tertiary Care Institution.
PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-five patients of ULVFP with a phonatory gap ranging from 2 to 6 mm.
MAIN OUTCOME MEA

BACKGROUND: Although Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) affects the connective tissue, pulmonary function might be compromised because of thoracic deformities. OI is known to be a restrictive lung disease, but spirometry provides global measurement without localizing the site of the restriction. Opto-electronic plethysmography (OEP), is a non-invasive method able to underline altered respiratory function as well as ventilatory thoraco-abdominal paradoxes during spontaneous breathing. We aimed to reconstruct the thoraco-abdominal surface, to perform local analyses of trunk motion and to make quantita

RATIONALE: Sitting-to-supine fall in vital capacity (ΔVC) can be used to help identify diaphragm dysfunction (DD), but its optimal predictive threshold value is uncertain. Our aim was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of ΔVC in identifying the presence of unilateral or bilateral DD.
METHODS: Patients referred to the diaphragm dysfunction clinic of our center (2017-2018) were included. All subjects had lung function testing (including measurement of ΔVC) and an ultrasound assessment of diaphragm thickening fraction (TFdi). Unilateral DD was defined as a single hemidiaphragm with TFdi ≤30

BACKGROUND: Living-donor lobar-lung transplantation (LDLLT) has evolved from a rarely performed experimental procedure to an accepted therapy for selected patients who are unlikely to survive the long wait for cadaveric lungs. However, a convincing study has not been performed that shows the effects of small grafts and of pre-operative variables in predicting functional outcome of recipients after LDLLT.
METHODS: From October 1998 to March 2002, 2 male and 11 female patients underwent LDLLT. Mean age was 27.3 years (range, 8-53 years). Diagnoses included primary pulmonary hypertension (n = 5)

Thirty-two pediatric patients with severe restrictive lung disease identified with vital capacities < 40% of predicted, who had undergone major reconstructive spine surgery, were reviewed. There were 18 boys and 14 girls, the mean age was 13 years (range, 7-17), and the mean vital capacity was 31% of predicted (range, 16-39%). Fifty-four procedures were performed, 13 posterior only, one of which was staged, and 19 anterior and posterior procedures, of which 15 were staged and four were sequential. The incidence of pulmonary complications (pneumonia, reintubation, pneumothorax, respiratory arre

BACKGROUND: Deterioration of vital capacity (VC) in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) signifies disease progression and indicates need for non-invasive ventilation. Weak facial muscles consequent to ALS, with resulting poor mouth seal, may interfere with the accuracy of VC measurements.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether different interfaces affect VC measurements in ALS patients and whether the interface yielding the largest VC produces an even higher VC when re-measured after one week (learning effect). To explore the relationship between optimal interface VC and sniff nasal pressure (SNIP)

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Cough and a reduction in vital capacity have recently been reported following breath-hold dives to depths of 25-75 m. We sought to investigate whether repetitive dives to depths of less than 30 m would elicit similar effects.
METHODS: Participants in a single-day spearfishing competition were recruited. Subjects performed spirometry before and after the 5-h event. Demographics, medical and diving history, respiratory symptoms and competition diving statistics were collected.
RESULTS: Twenty-five subjects (two females), age 33 years (11) (mean (SD)), were studied. Du

BACKGROUND: It is well-known that pulmonary function is altered in patients with ankylosing spondilitis (AS) owing mainly to the restriction of chest expansion. In addition to musculoskeletal factors, development of pulmonary function abnormalities may also deteriorate exercise tolerance of the patients.
AIM: The aim of this study was to examine the pulmonary function and exercise tolerance of AS patients.
DESIGN: A case controlled study.
SETTING: Outpatient clinic of an university hospital.
POPULATION AND METHODS: Twenty-two men with the diagnosis of definite AS and 20 healthy controls ma

BACKGROUND: Single-breath vital capacity technique is currently administered for inhalation induction of anesthesia with sevoflurane in adults. Because sevoflurane is used in children, the aim of this open nonrandomized trial was to explore the feasibility and acceptance of this technique in midazolam premedicated patients aged from 4 to 15 years old.
METHODS: A pediatric population (n = 118) was instructed in the vital capacity technique after their arrival in the induction room in a standardized and playful manner. Induction was performed with a circle-absorber breathing circuit, primed wit

Unbalanced hyperthyroidism leads to the feeling of dyspnea and to the decrease of vital lung capacity. Efficacious treatment of thyrotoxicosis relieves mentioned disorders and brings normalization of ventilation parameters. The main issue of this research was the analysis of vital lung capacity in female patients with properly treated hyperthyroidism and comparison of values of these parameters among patients with balanced thyrotoxicosis, non-toxic goitre and with non-thyroid disorders. Research was conducted on 300 randomized female-patients (ASA I, II), aged 18 to 47 with surgically treated

INTRODUCTION: Forced vital capacity (FVC) is an important tool for monitoring lung functions in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). However, several disease manifestations may influence the quality of FVC test in SSc. We aimed to assess the quality of FVC measurements according to current guidelines in patients with SSc and determine the factors that may affect results.
METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, SSc patients and age/sex matched controls underwent spirometry. Quality of FVC measurements were graded according to updated American Thoracic Society (ATS) and European Respiratory S

The distinction between healthy and pathological ageing has led to the concept of vitality capacity, which can be understood as the body's physiological reserve and estimated using 12 biomarkers distributed across three domains: immune and stress response, energy and metabolism, and neuromuscular function. This physiological reserve may be preserved by lifelong physical activity. This exploratory cross-sectional study aimed to examine the relationship between vitality capacity and lifelong aerobic physical activity. Vitality capacity of 20 lifelong active and 19 inactive healthy adults aged >

BACKGROUND: The ISHLT guidelines recommend early referral to a lung transplantation (LTx) center for patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) due to the unpredictable course. To our knowledge, no study has assessed the impact of forced vital capacity (FVC) reduction severity on LTx outcomes in ILD. This study aims to determine whether the severity of FVC reduction is associated with post-transplant outcomes in ILD.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Recipients from the French multicentric COLT cohort who underwent lung transplantation for ILD were included in this study. FVC was assessed to determine

BACKGROUND: Obstructive ventilatory defect (OVD) is the most common ventilatory pattern in bronchiectasis, with low forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), which is a well-known risk factor for acute exacerbation (AE). However, the impact of spirometry- defined restrictive components (restrictive ventilatory defects [RVD] or mixed ventilatory defects [MVD]) on AE remains unreported. This study evaluated the association between spirometry-defined restrictive components and AE risk in patients with bronchiectasis.
METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, patients from 51 referral hospita

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypertension associated with systemic sclerosis (SSc-PH) carries a significant risk of mortality. Although interstitial lung disease (ILD) often coexists with SSc-PH, its impact on prognosis varies considerably depending on disease extension. The prognostic implications of different degrees of functional impairment secondary to ILD in patients with SSc-PH remain poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to stratify patients with SSc-PH according to their functional parameters and to identify potential prognostic factors in different patterns of ILD extension.
