Effectiveness of a Voice Training Program for Student Teachers on Vocal Health.

OBJECTIVES: The effectiveness of a preventive training program on vocal health for German student teachers was investigated on specific vocal parameters. METHODS: The voice quality as described by the Dysphonia Severity Index of 204 student teachers (training group: n = 123; control group: n = 81) was measured at the beginning and at the end of the student teachers training period (duration 1.5 years). Additionally, for investigating the voice-carrying capacity, a vocal loading test (VLT) was performed. Finally, participants had to provide a subjective judgment of a possible Voice Handicap In

Reliability of student evaluations of voice therapy implications for theory and training.

This study examines reliability and the focus of attention of evaluations of voice therapy sessions. Therapy sessions were provided by 8 clinician-client pairs. For each pair, two 20-minute therapy sessions were evaluated by 50 undergraduate student raters and by 3 experienced clinicians. The goal of all therapy sessions was the modification of the frequency and type of voice onset. Raters evaluated each session using 12 behavioral and interpersonal criteria. Results indicated that (1) interrater reliability coefficients for each of the 12 criteria were moderately high to high, (2) the highest

Psychologists' experience of working with people who hear voices and their views on the idea of voice simulation training: A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Research indicates psychologists typically lack subjective understanding of voice hearing. Voice hearing simulation training has potential to improve understanding, empathy and confidence among clinicians, but psychologists have had limited input into its development. This study investigated psychologists' and a psychotherapist's clinical experience of working with people who hear voices and their views and recommendations for voice hearing simulation training. DESIGN: This was a qualitative study. METHODS: Clinical psychologists and one psychotherapist (N = 17) participated in s

Long-term Acoustic Effects of Gender-Affirming Voice Training in Transgender Women.

OBJECTIVES: One role of a speech-language pathologist (SLP) is to help transgender clients in developing a healthy, gender-congruent communication. Transgender women frequently approach SLPs to train their voices to sound more feminine, however, long-term acoustic effects of the training needs to be rigorously examined in effectiveness studies. The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term effects (follow-up 1: 3months and follow-up 2: 1year after last session) of gender-affirming voice training for transgender women, in terms of acoustic parameters. STUDY DESIGN: This study was a ra

Liuzijue Qigong: A Voice Training Method For Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis Patients.

OBJECTIVES: Liuzijue Qigong (LQG), a kind of traditional Chinese health exercise (TCHE), is not only widely used to strengthen physical fitness and maintain psychological well-being in the elderly but has also been utilized to help improve respiratory function. As respiratory support is an important driving force for speech production, it is logical to postulate that the LQG training method with 6 monosyllabic speech sounds, xū, hē, hū, sī, chuī, and xī, can help individuals (1) experience a relaxing and natural state of speech production, (2) eliminate voice symptoms, and (3) improve their ov

Project planning, training, measurement and sustainment: the successful implementation of voice recognition.

Computerized voice recognition systems (VR) can reduce costs and enhance service. The capital outlay required for conversion to a VR system is significant; therefore, it is incumbent on radiology departments to provide cost and service justifications to administrators. Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston implemented VR over a two-year period and achieved annual savings of $530,000 and a 50% decrease in report throughput. Those accomplishments required solid planning and implementation strategies, training and sustainment programs. This article walks through the process, step by step

Voice and Speech Training for the Transgendered Patient: What the Otolaryngologist Should Know.

Vocal dysphoria is present for many transgender individuals. Voice goals are defined by each individual client. Voice modification work can be challenging for both clinicians and clients, involving both direct and indirect aspects of intervention. The latter are likely to be less known to otolaryngologists but can form a significant part of clinical practice for experienced speech pathologists. Varying experience levels of treating clinicians can in turn have a bearing on the vocal outcomes achieved by clients. Those who do seek surgical assistance benefit from appropriate presurgery speech an

The impact of preventive voice care programs for training teachers: a longitudinal study.

The teaching profession puts vocal health at a higher risk than other professions, causing what is referred to as "occupational dysphonia." There is a need for primary prevention of "occupational dysphonia" among the teaching profession, where good vocal health is promoted before a problem occurs. To investigate the primary prevention of occupational dysphonia among teachers, this study uses a sample population of 55 training teachers, in the postgraduate certificate of education (PGCE) course at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, who were randomly assigned to three training groups: c

[Applications of the "Speech Viewer II" in voice training in vocal cord paralysis].

Referring to traditional therapeutical concepts of vocal fold paralysis a microphone-controlled computer programme was used for voice treatment in 13 patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis. 6 of these patients were female, 7 were male. The age ranged from 18 to 72 years (mean: 50 years). The etiology of the paralysis was distributed as follows: post strumectomy (4 cases), post operation of the aortic arch (3 cases), post mediastinoscopy (1 case), post operation of the cervical vertebrae (1 case). 2 cases are not decided yet, 2 are probably idiopathic. The vocal fold dysfunction lasted b

Effects of consensus training on the reliability of auditory perceptual ratings of voice quality.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: This study investigates the effect of consensus training of listeners on intrarater and interrater reliability and agreement of perceptual voice analysis. The use of such training, including a reference voice sample, could be assumed to make the internal standards held in memory common and more robust, which is of great importance to reduce the variability of auditory perceptual ratings. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective design with testing before and after training. METHODS: Thirteen students of audiologopedics served as listening subjects. The ratings were made using a mul

Speech therapy for psychogenic voice disorder: a survey of current practice and training.

A survey of speech therapists in the United Kingdom showed that they usually undertook the treatment of psychogenic voice disorders. Their pre-qualification education had provided advice that was usually reflected accurately in the experience they gained in practice, though during their education about a third had lacked any opportunity to treat or observe psychogenic voice disorders. The appropriate duration of treatment appears to be in doubt. At present, speech therapists acquire many of the psychological skills required for treatment after qualification. There is a substantial need for pos
