The clinical picture of yersiniosis in humans and its prevalence in the human population is described in detail. Mass production of animals, development of meat factories based on sophisticated chains of cold storage units and international trade of meat products and animals are believed to be the reasons for the increasing prevalence of yersiniosis in humans. In Germany, anti-Yersinia antibodies are found in up to 40% of the average population. The financial losses for the national economy cannot be judged. Of special interest for industrial medicine are sequelae-like reactive arthritis in ex

Yersinioses are zoonoses inspite of the fact, that the pathogen is rarely transferred directly from the animal to man, but mostly from contaminated food or contaminated surroundings. Enteritis or enterocolitis develop in most cases after infection with Y. enterocolitica (enteritic form), whereas pseudoappendicitis accompanied by massive mesenterial lymphadenitis of the ileocecal lymph nodes with or without the participation of adjacent parts of the intestine develops after infection with Y. pseudotuberculosis (pseudoappendicitic form). Some complications like arthritis and erythema nodosum occ

Aseptic arthritis can occur following intestinal infections due to Shigella, Salmonella, Campylobacter jejuni and Clostridium difficile. These rheumatisms are rare, only occurring in about 1 p. cent of cases, generally in patients with the HLA-B27 antigen. Whatever the causative organism, the arthritis has features in common with all reactive arthrites. They generally have a favourable course.

Yersinia is a genus of bacteria that includes several species known to cause diseases in humans and animals. We explore developments in anti-bacterial compounds to counteract Yersinia infections, focusing on both traditional antibiotic therapies and novel strategies targeting virulence factors, host-pathogen interactions, and vaccine development. This review evaluates current strategies for the treatment and management of Yersinia infections, outlining key challenges and emerging opportunities for improved clinical outcomes.

The Yersiniae are a group of Gram-negative coccobacilli inhabiting a wide range of habitats. The genus harbors three recognized human pathogens: Y. enterocolitica and Y. pseudotuberculosis, which both cause gastrointestinal disease, and Y. pestis, the causative agent of plague. These three organisms have served as models for a number of aspects of infection biology, including adhesion, immune evasion, evolution of pathogenic traits, and retracing the course of ancient pandemics. The virulence of the pathogenic Yersiniae is heavily dependent on a number of adhesin molecules. Some of these, such

As a pathogen of plague, Yersinia pestis caused three massive pandemics in history that killed hundreds of millions of people. Yersinia pestis is highly invasive, causing severe septicemia which, if untreated, is usually fatal to its host. To survive in the host and maintain a persistent infection, Yersinia pestis uses several stratagems to evade the innate and the adaptive immune responses. For example, infections with this organism are biphasic, involving an initial "noninflammatory" phase where bacterial replication occurs initially with little inflammation and following by extensive phagoc

After a primary operation for renal artery stenosis a 48-year-old woman had to be re-operated twice for renewed arterial stenosis and retroperitoneal bleeding. The patient's respiratory and cardiovascular functions were stable two days after the second operation and renal function was recovering. But because of suspected renewed bleeding a transfusion with erythrocyte concentrate was begun. Fifteen minutes later the patient started to shiver and this was followed by signs of cardiocirculatory decompensation under the picture of a septic-toxic shock. Laboratory tests did not indicate a haemolyt

The clinical course of generalized Yersinia enterocolitica infection in 13 patients was observed. Two syndromes were apparent; seven patients had an acute septicemic picture, whereas the rest had a subacute localizing infection that usually produced hepatic or splenic abscesses. The latter form often resembled amebic hepatitis clinically, and five of the six patients died despite antibiotic treatment. The acute septicemic form of the disease resembled systemic salmonellosis, and most cases responded to therapy with the appropriate antibiotics.

The clinical presentation, course and outcome of Yersinia enterocolitica infection was studied prospectively in 125 children. Enteric forms occurred in 114 children (92 enteritis, 20 pseudoappendicitis, 2 chronic ileitis), of whom 17 also had extramesenteric manifestations; 11 children had one or more extramesenteric forms without enteric disease. Enteritis occurred more frequently in young children whereas serious forms and extramesenteric forms were more common in children older than 6 years of age (P < 0.001). Arthritis was observed in 13 children and extensive lymphadenopathy in 11; 1 chil

Yersinia pestis has been infecting humans since the Late Neolithic (LN). Whether those early infections were isolated zoonoses or initiators of a pandemic remains unclear. We report Y. pestis infections in two individuals (of 133) from the LN necropolis at Warburg (Germany, 5300-4900 cal BP). Our analyses show that the two genomes belong to distinct strains and reflect independent infection events. All LN genomes known today (n = 4) are basal in the phylogeny and represent separate lineages that probably originated in different animal hosts. In the LN, an opening of the landscape resulted in t

With an estimated 100 million victims, pandemically and epidemically occurring plague has been looked upon as a classical scourge of mankind during the last two millenia. Without treatment at least 50% of the affected individuals die from infection with Yersinia pestis, a bacterium belonging to the family of Enterobacteriaceae. The disease takes a fulminant course. After an incubation period of 2-6 days, bubonic plague primarily attacks one group of lymph nodes. The onset of pulmonic plague, transmitted by droplet infection, takes place within several hours and causes bronchopneumonia. Early r

Infections of the intestinal tract with Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis are known the world over. Post-infection reactions like arthritis, erythema nodosum, erythema multiforme, scarlatiniform exanthemata and septicemic types deserve particular clinical attention. The clinical importance of enteric yersinioses has been shown in studies with the identification of significant antibody titers against Yersinia enterocolitis and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis in 6.71 and 4.58% respectively of 4411 patients examined for the first time. It was possible to isolate Yersinia enteroc

The predominant form (65% of all patients) of yersiniosis is mesenteric adenitis, resulting in enteritis, pseudo-appendicular syndromes, ileitis or colitis. The severity of this form depends to some degree on the age. Extra-mesenteric forms (in 20-25%), focal infections by dissemination, the septic form and the lymphadenopathy syndrome may occur after or without previous enteritis. Persistence of Y. enterocolitica in lymphnodes and the GALT is responsible for chronic and recurrent forms. Secondary immunological complications (25%) are arthritis and Erythema nodosum. Diagnosis is made by cultur

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous manifestations occurring in infections due to Yersinia enterocolitica are usually erythema nodosum, erythema multiforme or cutaneous vasculitis. The association between Yersinia infection and Sweet's syndrome is rare. We describe such a case contributing to the discussion on this association.
CASE-REPORT: A 29-year-old woman had a papulo-pustular eruption with fever associated with arthralgia. The results of the infectious laboratory investigations were negative but Yersinia enterocolitica type 0.9 was isolated from a stool culture. The serologic diagnosis of Yersinia en
