Comparison of cardiovascular effects of tiletamine-zolazepam, pentobarbital, and ketamine-xylazine in male rats.

We allocated 35 male Sprague-Dawley rats into 7 groups and anesthetized each by using one of the following regimens: ketamine 50 mg+xylaxine 5 mg; ketamine 75 mg+xylazine 5 mg; pentobarbital 45 mg; and Telazol 30, 40, 50, and 60 mg/kg; supplemental doses were used as required. Respiratory rate, heart rate, mean arterial pressure, cardiac index, and stroke index were measured every 30 min for 4 h. The Telazol groups showed a dose-dependent increase in duration of anesthesia. Duration of anesthesia was significantly shorter for the ketamine and pentobarbital groups than for any of the Telazol do

Cardiorespiratory effects of isoflurane and medetomidine-tiletamine-zolazepam in 12 bonobos (Pan paniscus).

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is a significant cause of mortality in captive great apes. However, data from bonobos are lacking due to a paucity of collections in Europe. Comprehensive preventive screening is required to understand the aetiopathogenesis of cardiovascular disease, but the provision of a stable and predictable anaesthetic protocol with minimal cardiovascular effects is challenging. METHODS: This prospective, observational case series reports anaesthesia of 12 bonobos using hand-injected medetomidine and tiletamine-zolazepam followed by maintenance with isoflurane in oxygen…

Effect of Xylazine-Tiletamine-Zolazepam on the Local Field Potential of the Rat Olfactory Bulb.

Neural oscillations of the mammalian olfactory system have been studied for decades. This research suggests they are linked to various processes involved in odor information analysis, depending on the vigilance state and presentation of stimuli. In addition, the effects of various anesthetics, including commonly used ones like chloral hydrate, pentobarbital, ketamine, and urethane, on the local field potential (LFP) in the olfactory bulb (OB) have been studied. In particular, the combination of xylazine and tiletamine-zolazepam has been shown to produce steady anesthesia for an extended period…

TILETAMINE-ZOLAZEPAM-XYLAZINE ANESTHESIA IN EX SITU BLACK-HANDED SPIDER MONKEYS (ATELES GEOFFROYI SSP.).

Black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi ssp.) are endangered in Mexico. Safe anesthetic protocols are important for in situ and ex situ conservation problems. Such protocols are scarce in the literature; nor have safety and physiologic responses been reported. High doses and volume are a counter side for field immobilizations. We tested an anesthetic protocol with a combination of tiletamine-zolazepam (5 mg/kg) plus xylazine (1 mg/kg) in 14 black-handed spider monkeys under human care from two facilities in Mexico. Physiological parameters such as HR, RR, T, SPO2, systolic arterial press…

Assessing the safety and efficacy of an anaesthetic protocol combining tiletamine, zolazepam and xylazine when used in tigers.

BACKGROUND: Due to the limited availability of ketamine in Mexico, alternative anaesthetic protocols for the immobilisation of big cats such as tigers (Panthera tigris ssp.) need to be considered. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of an anaesthetic protocol combining tiletamine, zolazepam and xylazine when used in tigers. METHODS: Sixteen tigers (seven P. tigris tigris and nine P. tigris altaica) at two zoological institutions in Mexico were included in the study. Tigers were either darted or hand injected with a combination of tiletamine/zolazepam (1.5 mg/kg) and …

Reversible immobilization of free-ranging snow leopards (panthera uncia) with a combination of medetomidine and tiletamine-zolazepam.

Conservation and research of the elusive snow leopard (Panthera uncia) have been hampered by inadequate knowledge about its basic life history. Global positioning system (GPS) collars can provide useful information, but there has been limited information available on safe capture methods, drug doses, and efficacy for effective immobilization of free-ranging snow leopards. We describe a drug protocol using a combination of medetomidine and tiletamine-zolazepam for the chemical immobilization of free-ranging snow leopards. We also describe physiologic responses to immobilization drugs, including…
