Zygomycosis is an uncommon polymorphic fungal disease. One clinical subtype, nasofacial zygomycosis, is caused by infectious exposure to the organism Conidiobolus coronatus. A case affecting the nose and lips of a 42-year-old Malay man is reported here. The clinicopathologic features and management of this disease are described, and its differential diagnosis is discussed.

The fungal disease zygomycosis was diagnosed in the thoracic cavity of two 7-weeks-old ducks. In the first case, the diagnosis was based on examination of granulomas that were found to contain fungal hyphae characteristics of zygomycetes. The second case was diagnosed using similar criteria along with the subsequent culture of Mucor sp. from the lesion. To attain a definitive diagnosis of zygomycosis, the fungal hyphae found during histologic examination must be differentiated from Aspergillus sp. and Dactylaria gallopava.

An unusual disease characterized by anorexia, progressive stunting and stomach impaction was observed in young ostriches after treatment with antibiotics. The massive accumulation of a clear white gelatinous mucus adherent to the inner surface of the ventriculus plus a severe necrosis of the glandular layer were the only consistent findings. Histological examination revealed typical forms of a zygomycete invading the affected tissue. The zygomycete Rhizopus oryzae was isolated from the ventriculus of all the affected ostriches.

Zygomycosis (mucormycosis) is a rare but highly invasive infection caused by fungi belonging to the order Mucorales, which includes the genera Rhizopus, Mucor, Rhizomucor, Absidia, Apophysomyces, Saksenaea, Cunninghamella, Cokeromyces and Syncephalastrum. This type of infection is usually associated with hematologic diseases, diabetic ketoacidosis and organ transplantation. The most common form of presentation is rhinocerebral mucormycosis, with or without pulmonary involvement. Pulmonary zygomycosis is more common in patients with profound, prolonged neutropenia and can present as segmental o…

Zygomycosis is rare but highly invasive fungal infection, with high mortality rate. A 67 years old diabetic man was presented with rhino-ocular form of the disease. Fungal elements invaded the skin and subutaneous facial tissue, with involvement of the nose, paranasal sinuses and orbit. The portal of entry of fungus was through paranasal sinuses, after the tooth extraction. Various clinical manifestations were presented: headache, facial swelling, tenderness over the involved sinuses, unilateral orbital cellulitis with proptosis, facial and orbital pain, black nasal discharge, decreased visual…

A biliary drainage catheter that traversed the right pleural space was associated with unilateral pleural infection by an unidentified zygomycete that caused pleural mucormycosis. The fungal infection was confined to the pleura and immediately subjacent lung. We interpreted these findings as a fungal wound infection that unfortunately involved a major body cavity.

A 63-year-old diabetic man presented with sinusitis with orbital and intracranial signs progressing over one week, due to zygomycosis. Despite control of the diabetes, surgical excision of infected tissue and antifungal therapy he died in the fifth week of illness. Pathological study showed extensive fungal infiltration of periorbital structures and mycotic thrombosis of many blood vessels with associated necrosis and infarction of fat and extraocular muscles.

We present a fatal case of rhino-orbital-cerebral zygomycosis in an 81-year old immunocompromised patient with a 18-year history of multiple myeloma. The patient initially presented with symptoms of an orbital complication, loss of vision after acute sinusitis and agranulocytosis. Endonasal sinus surgery with orbital decompression was performed. Within days a rapid visero-cerebral progression of necrosis developed finally causing the patient's death. Invasive fungal infections are generally characterized by diagnostic difficulties in the early stage and exhibit an extremely high mortality. Def…

Decrease of host resistance in subcutaneous zygomycosis appears to be very specific. Potassium iodide causes nonspecific resolution of the eosinophilic granuloma. The disease offers a unique direct human model for the study of host resistance and granuloma resolution.

Zygomycosis is an acute or chronic infection caused by several fungal agents belonging to the phylum Zygomycota. These are saprophytic fungi and are found ubiquitously in the environment. These are emerging highly opportunistic pathogenic organisms. Basidiobolus ranarum (B. haptosporus, B. meristoporus) is a fungus belonging to the order Entomophthorales under the family Zygomycota. Basidiobolomycosis is a predominantly subcutaneous infection involving the trunk and limbs in immunocompetent hosts. We hereby report a case of Basidiobolomycosis from the Department of Microbiology, Siddhartha Med…

Zygomycosis, or mucormycosis, is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in both children and adults. Studies in adults have shown an increase in the incidence of zygomycosis, particularly among haemtopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients and patients with haematologic malignancies. There is a paucity of data on the epidemiology of zygomycosis in children. We performed a retrospective analysis to describe trends in zygomycosis between 1 January 2003 and 31 December 2010. We used the Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) database to identify paediatric patients who wer…

Zygomycoses are severe angio-invasive fungal infections that develop in immunocompromised and diabetic patients. Any episode of sinusitis not responding to short-term antibacterial therapy should evoke the diagnosis of zygomycosis in the latter population, especially in cases of a surrounding necrotic area. Appropriate diagnosis is obtained after careful direct examination of the sample and culture. Current therapy underscores the need to control glycaemia and acidosis in addition to the need for urgent administration of high-dose liposomal amphotericin B in combination with extensive surgery.

Zygomycosis refers to a group of uncommon and frequently fatal mycoses caused by fungi of the class Zygomycetes, the organisms of which are usually found in decaying organic matter. Disease can be transmitted by the inhalation of spores or by direct inoculation on disrupted skin or mucosa. For rare diseases such as zygomycosis, two or more cases occurring in a short time should be investigated as a probable epidemic. Twelve hospital outbreaks and two pseudoepidemics caused by Zygomycetes have been cited in the English literature. The first epidemic was recorded in 1977 and the last in 2008. Ou…

Combined histological and mycological study of tissue specimens established a proven diagnosis of cutaneous zygomycosis in four patients. All patients had been treated with wide spectrum antibiotics and one patient (liver transplantation) was in addition also treated with cyclosporine. All had acidosis and cutaneous breaks and four had also been treated with systemic corticosteroids. The infecting organisms were Absidia corymbifera (n=2), Rhizopus stolonifer (n=1) and Mucor circinelloides (n=1). Combined treatment with i.v. conventional and liposomal formulations of amphotericin B and surgical…
