[Acoustic reflex as one of the indicators of the maturity of the functioning of the auditory analyzer].

UNLABELLED: The acoustic reflex is a physiological protective mechanism of the sound-conducting system of the auditory analyzer, which allows to identify various retrocochlear lesions of the human auditory system. The absence of its registration may indicate both pathology and immaturity of the auditory analyzer in children of the first year of life. OBJECTIVE: To register the acoustic reflex in children of the first year of life, to identify a full-fledged acoustic reflex at various frequencies and to analyze the dependence of its appearance on the timing of gestation. MATERIAL AND METHODS:

Influence of simulated adverse events of the floating mass transducer in a mechanical middle ear model.

BACKGROUND: The Vibrant Soundbridge Implant provides multiple options for coupling the Floating Mass Transducer (FMT) to the ossicles. A parametric evaluation in clinical trials is difficult. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: We studied the vibratory output of the FMT with three couplers-short process, former long process, and current long process-in an acoustic-mechanical middle ear model (AMEM) under simulated impaired coupling conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The AMEM, with life-sized ossicles, was tested via acoustic and electrical (FMT-) stimulation. Simulated impairments included accidental bone-cont

Spontaneous generalization of abstract multimodal patterns in young domestic chicks.

From the early stages of life, learning the regularities associated with specific objects is crucial for making sense of experiences. Through filial imprinting, young precocial birds quickly learn the features of their social partners by mere exposure. It is not clear though to what extent chicks can extract abstract patterns of the visual and acoustic stimuli present in the imprinting object, and how they combine them. To investigate this issue, we exposed chicks (Gallus gallus) to three days of visual and acoustic imprinting, using either patterns with two identical items or patterns with tw

Estimating the acoustic reflex threshold from wideband measures of reflectance, admittance, and power.

OBJECTIVE: A method was developed to estimate the contralateral acoustic reflex threshold using shifts in wideband energy reflectance, admittance magnitude and power. DESIGN: In the first experiment contralateral reflex thresholds for a noise activator were estimated on three adult participants using reflectance, admittance and power measurements at frequencies from 250 to 8000 Hz. The reflex threshold was defined using a magnitude and a correlation technique, both having the property of examining the pattern of the reflex-induced shift across a fairly broad frequency range (250 to 2000 Hz).

Recovery of the human intra-aural muscle reflex after "pauses" of various depth.

Decay and recovery of the ipsilateral and contralateral stapedius reflex were studied in eight normal hearing subjects. The activity of the intra-aural muscle was recorded as a change of the ear's acoustic impedance in response to prolonged stimulation at 2 000 Hz. A one-second long attenuation of the stimulus tone by 2 to 40 dB was introduced when the response had decayed to a certain level. The recovery following the "pause" was observed. The results show that a "pause" with a depth as small as 2 dB produced approximately 40% of total recovery. A 20 dB attenuation resulted in a recovery equa

Altered processing of acoustic stimuli during sleep: reduced auditory activation and visual deactivation detected by a combined fMRI/EEG study.

Although there is evidence that acoustic stimuli are processed differently during sleep and wakefulness, little is known about the underlying neuronal mechanisms. In the present study, the processing of an acoustic stimulus was investigated during different non rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep stages using a combined EEG/fMRI approach in healthy human volunteers: A text stimulus was presented to sleep-deprived subjects prior to and after the onset of sleep, and single-slice silent fMRI were acquired. We found significantly different blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) contrast responses du

Acoustically-Activated Liposomal Nanocarriers to Mitigate the Side Effects of Conventional Chemotherapy with a Focus on Emulsion-Liposomes.

To improve currently available cancer treatments, nanomaterials are employed as smart drug delivery vehicles that can be engineered to locally target cancer cells and respond to stimuli. Nanocarriers can entrap chemotherapeutic drugs and deliver them to the diseased site, reducing the side effects associated with the systemic administration of conventional anticancer drugs. Upon accumulation in the tumor cells, the nanocarriers need to be potentiated to release their therapeutic cargo. Stimulation can be through endogenous or exogenous modalities, such as temperature, electromagnetic irradiati

Fronto-Temporal Coupling Dynamics During Spontaneous Activity and Auditory Processing in the Bat Carollia perspicillata.

Most mammals rely on the extraction of acoustic information from the environment in order to survive. However, the mechanisms that support sound representation in auditory neural networks involving sensory and association brain areas remain underexplored. In this study, we address the functional connectivity between an auditory region in frontal cortex (the frontal auditory field, FAF) and the auditory cortex (AC) in the bat Carollia perspicillata. The AC is a classic sensory area central for the processing of acoustic information. On the other hand, the FAF belongs to the frontal lobe, a brai

[Electrophysiologic studies in patients with cochlear implants].

The insertion of reliable extracochlear single-canal cochlear implants in cophotic and subcophotic patients allows the electrical stimulation of the acoustic nerve for rehabilitation, as well as audiovestibular explorations that are no longer possible in the acoustic mode. The authors therefore aim at replacing all these examinations with their Electrical equivalent: --early evoked potentials (E-BERA), --medium-latency evoked potentials (E-MLR), --Event-related evoked potentials (E-P300), for which, to our knowledge, theses are the first recordings, --electrical stapedial reflex, --vestibular

Facial nerve function after cerebellopontine angle surgery and prognostic value of intraoperative facial nerve monitoring: a critical evaluation.

PURPOSE: Facial nerve monitoring is often used to predict postoperative facial function after acoustic neuroma tumor removal. In this study, three methods of predicting facial nerve function were compared. These methods used various parameters of the evoked electromyographic monitoring. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-four patients who underwent surgery for acoustic neuroma were retrospectively reviewed. Amplitude of ongoing electromyographic activity, stimulation current thresholds, and the amplitude of evoked response were analyzed. The predictive value of the three methods was compared with

Brainstem plasticity and modified loudness following short-term use of hearing aids.

Previous research has shown that the threshold of the middle ear acoustic reflex is modified in adult listeners following 1 week of continuous monaural sensory deprivation [Munro and Blount, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 126, 568-571 (2009)]. The results of the present study provide evidence of plasticity in the brainstem of adult listeners following monaural auditory stimulation. Acoustic reflexes were obtained at a higher sound pressure level in the ear that had been fitted with a low-gain hearing aid for 5 days. These changes are in the opposite direction to those reported after sensory deprivation a

[Audiovestibular exploration of the brain stem (author's transl)].

In the context of a postgraduate lecture for specialist physicians, the author describes techniques of objective audiology used on a daily basis in the exploration of the brain stem in the ENT department of Lariboisiere Hospital. The following are reviewed for each of them: --the corresponding anatomical pathways, --the principles and techniques used. The results are illustrated by examples. Increase in the threshold of stapes acoustic reflex above 95 dB on a frequency of 1,000 Hz is highly suggestive of acoustic nerve involvement or the lower part of the brain stem (bar sign). By contrast, th

A Fully-Implantable Cochlear Implant SoC with Piezoelectric Middle-Ear Sensor and Arbitrary Waveform Neural Stimulation.

A system-on-chip for an invisible, fully-implantable cochlear implant is presented. Implantable acoustic sensing is achieved by interfacing the SoC to a piezoelectric sensor that detects the sound-induced motion of the middle ear. Measurements from human cadaveric ears demonstrate that the sensor can detect sounds between 40 and 90 dB SPL over the speech bandwidth. A highly-reconfigurable digital sound processor enables system power scalability by reconfiguring the number of channels, and provides programmable features to enable a patient-specific fit. A mixed-signal arbitrary waveform neural

Pleasantness in Eventfulness? Bayesian circumplex assessment for ISO soundscape prediction modelsa).

Many studies on predictability of soundscape perception apply the ISO/TS 12913-3 circumplex to derive Pleasantness and Eventfulness scores as targets in statistical models. The standard assumes a fixed geometry; its validation within prediction pipelines, however, remains uncommon. Therefore, a Bayesian framework was applied to three datasets under a shared set of acoustic and psychoacoustic predictors to assess ISO circumplex compliance. Bayesian mixed-effects ordered-logistic models were fitted to predict ratings of each perceived affective quality (PAQ) item and evaluated using participant-

Bimodality of auditory receptors in bush-crickets. Сontinued discussion. It's time to experiment.

Continuation of the discussion on the sensitivity of the chordotonal sensilla of the tympanal organ of bush-crickets to vibratory stimuli. We have previously shown that individual receptors registered directly in the tympanal organ perceive vibrations along with sound stimuli. In addition, scolopidia of the crista acustica possess mixed sensitivity, too, as well as receptors of the intermediate organ. The authors of the comment offered their opinion concerning our applied methods as well as our obtained results. In particular, they noted the dissimilarity of our data from the previously obtain

Spatially selective ultrasound field formation using acoustic holography for cultured-cell applications.

Spatially selective ultrasound exposure is essential for investigating mechanotransduction and for developing targeted ultrasound-based therapies. However, conventional low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) systems provide limited control over the spatial distribution of acoustic pressure and acoustic intensity. In this study, we propose an acoustic holography-based framework for spatially selective ultrasound field formation and apply it to cultured-cell-compatible environment. A holographic control algorithm combining Iterative Angular Spectrum Approach (IASA) and gradient-based optimizati

Optoacoustically induced auditory brainstem responses in the mouse model enhanced through an absorbing film.

SIGNIFICANCE: Optoacoustic stimulation offers an alternative stimulation strategy for the hearing organ. To serve as the base for a novel auditory prosthesis, the optoacoustic stimulation must be biocompatible and energy-saving. AIM: Enhancing the efficiency of optoacoustic stimulation while reducing the energy input in a suited animal model. APPROACH: Optoacoustically induced auditory brainstem responses (oABRs) were recorded after the pulsed laser irradiation of the tympanic membrane (TM) in mice. The results were compared with the ABRs induced through acoustic click stimulation. In additi

Effects of stimulation techniques on vocal responses: implications for assessment and treatment.

During voice evaluation and treatment it is customary for clinicians to elicit samples of the vowel /a/ from clients using various elicitation techniques. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of four commonly used stimulation tasks on the laryngeal mechanism. Eleven female singing students, studying at a university music school, served as subjects for the study. The subjects phonated the vowel /a/ using 4 vocal stimulation techniques: yawn-sigh, gentle onset, focus, and the use of the voiceless fricative. Videoendoscopic and acoustic evaluations of their productions were done.

Increased reliance on top-down information to compensate for reduced bottom-up use of acoustic cues in dyslexia.

Speech recognition is a complex human behavior in the course of which listeners must integrate the detailed phonetic information present in the acoustic signal with their general linguistic knowledge. It is commonly assumed that this process occurs effortlessly for most people, but it is still unclear whether this also holds true in the case of developmental dyslexia (DD), a condition characterized by perceptual deficits. In the present study, we used a dual-task setting to test the assumption that speech recognition is effortful for people with DD. In particular, we tested the Ganong effect (
