BACKGROUND: Combined post-traumatic aniridia and aphakia demand extensive and complex reconstructive surgery. We present our approach for simultaneous correction of this surgical situation with the use of the ArtificialIris (Dr. Schmidt Intraocularlinsen GmbH, Germany) with a foldable acrylic IOL Lentis L-313 (Oculentis, GmbH, Germany) sutured to its surface. The novelty (our first operation was on June 2010) of this surgical technique is based on the combined use of foldable (with closed haptics) IOL and Artificialiris to correct post-traumatic aniridia and aphakia.
METHODS: Four consecutive

A consanguinous couple had a healthy boy and 2 children, a girl and a boy, with distal renal tubular acidosis and sensory nerve deafness. In addition, the girl had congenital glaucoma and malformation of the iris; the boy developed Wilms tumor and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. The possible significance of these associations is discussed.

A two-month-old girl with aniridia was found to have an optic pit in one eye and the morning glory disc anomaly in the other eye. The patient's mother had corectopia and atypical iris defects. The findings are described and the embryology of the various abnormalities briefly reviewed. This is the first report of such an association of findings in a family with aniridia. Failure of normal neuroectodermal development may play a role in the development of optic pits and the morning glory disc anomaly.

A rare case of a one-year-old child with Wilms' tumor, aniridia and glaucoma is described, in whom bone marrow chromosome analysis showed the presence of an interstitial microdeletion on the short arm of chromosome 11, presumably involving the p13 band. Research of the enzyme activity of RBC catalase showed a 40% reduction. This finding is compatible with the loss of the 11p13 band which contains the gene coding this enzyme. 11p13 deletion in Wilms' tumor and 13q interstitial deletion in retinoblastoma provide a rare case of prezygotic chromosome abnormality, which may be considered to have a

In this case report, we explore a complex and rare presentation of simultaneous aniridia, xerophthalmia, corneal ulcer, and keratomalacia in a 21-year-old patient with a congenital history of nystagmus and progressively diminishing visual acuity. The patient experienced a recent exacerbation of ocular pain and redness, primarily in the right eye, which led to a comprehensive ophthalmological evaluation. Examination revealed corneal ulceration, vascularization, and the absence of the iris, posing a unique clinical challenge. In this report, we detail the personalized management and therapeutic

BACKGROUND: To identify the disease-causing gene in a Chinese family affected with congenital aniridia.
METHODS: Patients underwent systematic ophthalmic examinations such as anterior segment photography, fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, and fundus fluorescein angiography. The proband was screened for pathogenic variants by whole exome sequencing (WES) and copy number variant (CNV) analysis. Real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) was applied to confirm the CNV results. Breakpoints were identified by long-range PCR followed by Sanger sequencing.
RESULTS: All seven members of th

PURPOSE: Congenital aniridia is a serious eye disease characterized by absence of iris to various degrees. The aims of this study were to investigate health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adults with aniridia and assess the relationships between HRQoL, psychological status, ocular health and obesity.
METHODS: Twenty-nine adults with congenital aniridia (48% male, aged 18-79 years) participated. HRQoL was measured with SF-36 and the EQ visual analogue scale (VAS). The physical (PCS) and mental (MCS) component summaries of the SF-36 were calculated with higher scores indicating better HRQoL

PURPOSE: To correlate the degree of foveal hypoplasia in congenital aniridia with visual acuity, iris phenotype, and PAX6 mutations.
DESIGN: Retrospective case series.
METHODS: Ninety-five consecutive patients with high-quality spectral-domain optical coherence tomography records and available genotype were included in a single referral center. Iris hypoplasia was classified as complete, presence of iris root or remnants, and mild atypical aniridia. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography images were assessed to classify foveal hypoplasia as grade 1 to 4 and to determine mean thicknesse

BACKGROUND: Post-operative endophthalmitis is a serious complication of intraocular surgery which may present acutely or chronically. Chronic post-operative endophthalmitis is characterized by decreased visual acuity, mild pain, and low-grade uveitis several weeks or months after intraocular surgery which may be responsive to corticosteroids, but recur upon tapering. Low virulence organisms such as Propionibacterium acnes are the most common culprit organisms, and treatment most often consists of both intravitreal antibiotic injections and surgery. Aniridia is a condition defined by total or p

PURPOSE: Aniridia is a rare panocular disorder characterized by iris hypoplasia and other associated eye anomalies. Heterozygous null mutations in paired box gene 6 (PAX6) are the major cause of the classic aniridia phenotype. This study aims to detect the mutational spectrum of PAX6 and associated phenotypes in southern Indian patients with sporadic and familial aniridia.
METHODS: Genomic DNA was isolated from peripheral blood from all participants. The coding regions and flanking intronic sequences of PAX6 were screened with Sanger sequencing in 30 probands with aniridia. The identified var

Autosomal dominant microphthalmia with late-onset keratitis and iris coloboma/aniridia has not been reported before. Here we report a Chinese family with these phenotypes and a novel PAX6 mutation. Microphthalmia, late-onset keratitis, iris coloboma, and nystagmus were present in the proband. His son had microphthalmia, aniridia, foveal hypoplasia, and nystagmus. A novel c.649C>T (p.Arg217X) mutation in PAX6 was detected in the proband and his affected son. This study expands the phenotypic spectrum of PAX6 mutation and enriched our knowledge of the genetic cause for microphthalmia and late-on

We report a symptomatic failure of the baroreceptor blood pressure (BP) buffering mechanism in a woman with familial aniridia. Her baseline BP oscillated at 0.1 Hz, the frequency of Mayer waves, with increased amplitude on standing without orthostatic hypotension. Although sudomotor function was normal, cutaneous thermoregulatory function and BP response to Valsalva's maneuver were abnormal. The defective BP buffer mechanism suggests Mayer waves could be a sympathetic mediated cardiovascular resonance. Baroreceptor cardioinhibition was intact. We presume that the lesion is in the rostral aspec
