Multimodality evoked potentials and electrically elicited blink reflex in optic neuritis.

Pattern shift visual evoked potentials, brain stem auditory evoked potentials, spinal and scalp recorded somatosensory evoked potentials, and electrically elicited blink reflexes were investigated in 32 patients with isolated optic neuritis. Eleven patients were shown to have one additional lesion in the central nervous system outside the optic nerve. Therefore, cases with optic neuritis of unknown origin should be considered as possible cases of multiple sclerosis.

[Abolition by naloxone of the inhibitory effect of peripheral electrical stimulation on the blink reflex].

The effects of a low frequency (2 c/sec) peripheral stimulation (electro-acupuncture, EA) on the nociceptive (R2) response of the blink reflex elicited by supra-orbital nerve stimulation (0.1 msec, 1 shock/8 sec) were studied in 10 healthy subjects. EA stimulation produced a very significant inhibition of the reflex in 8 subjects. Double-blind injection of naloxone (0.8 mg) reversed this inhibition while no signiificant change was observed with placebo. These results suggest that EA stimulation induces the release of endogenous opiates.

Blinks are strategically coupled with head movements in unconstrained natural gaze behavior.

Blinks are a ubiquitous yet largely unnoticed aspect of human vision, despite causing frequent interruptions of visual input that can amount to up to 10% of waking time. By leveraging a large dataset of unconstrained gaze behavior during two natural tasks, we found a behavioral strategy to limit the impact of blinks: blinks were strategically coupled with head movements, which minimizes information loss due to unreliable visual input during head movements. Specifically, blink probability increased with higher head velocities and showed strong temporal modulation relative to head movement onset

Gender differences in attentional blink in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) is more prevalent in boys than girls. However, there was a larger proportion of girls displaying inattentive symptoms compared to boys. AIM: To investigate the gender differences in attentional blink in children with ADHD. METHOD: A total of 99 children in the ADHD group and 99 children in the typically developing children group were assessed. All children completed a dual-task rapid continuous visual presentation paradigm. RESULTS: The onset time of attentional blink in girls in the ADHD group was later than that in the typically d

The blink reflex and its modulation - Part 2: Pathophysiology and clinical utility.

The blink reflex (BR) is integrated at the brainstem; however, it is modulated by inputs from various structures such as the striatum, globus pallidus, substantia nigra, and nucleus raphe magnus but also from afferent input from the peripheral nervous system. Therefore, it provides information about the pathophysiology of numerous peripheral and central nervous system disorders. The BR is a valuable tool for studying the integrity of the trigemino-facial system, the relevant brainstem nuclei, and circuits. At the same time, some neurophysiological techniques applying the BR may indicate abnorm

Effects of tDCS on the attentional blink revisited: A statistical evaluation of a replication attempt.

The attentional blink (AB) phenomenon reveals a bottleneck of human information processing: the second of two targets is often missed when they are presented in rapid succession among distractors. In our previous work, we showed that the size of the AB can be changed by applying transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (lDLPFC) (London & Slagter, Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, 33, 756-68, 2021). Although AB size at the group level remained unchanged, the effects of anodal and cathodal tDCS were negatively correlated: if a given individual'

Assessment of eye closure and blink with facial palsy: A systematic literature review.

Facial palsy can cause the impairment of eye closure and affect blink, ocular health, communication, and esthetics. Dynamic surgical procedures can restore eye closure in patients with decreased facial nerve function. There are no standardized measures of voluntary and spontaneous eye closure that are used to evaluate the outcomes of blink restoration procedures. The purpose of this systematic literature review was to identify the measures used to assess normal and abnormal eye closure and blinking in patients with facial palsy. A literature search of the PubMed database using the keyword "fac

Analysis of blink activity and anomalous eyelid movements in patients with hemifacial spasm.

To assess spontaneous blinking and anomalous eyelid movements in patients with hemifacial spasm with an emphasis on interocular differences. Spontaneous eyelid movements were registered bilaterally for 3 min using a high-speed video camera in 28 patients with hemifacial spasm (HFS) who had not been treated with botulinum toxin injections for at least 5 months. The degree of blink conjugacy, maximum velocity, and amplitude of the closing phase of the blinks were determined for the affected and non-affected sides. Out of the 28 subjects, 23 (82%) presented with abnormal nonconjugate spasms that

How Blink Anomalies Can Contribute to Post-LASIK Neurotrophic Epitheliopathy.

: Post-LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis) symptoms and signs of dry eye have multiple causes. For example, tear osmolarity and the concentration of inflammatory mediators can increase because of reduced aqueous production and increased evaporative loss as a result of lower blink rates and increased interblink intervals. The tear concentration of inflammatory mediators can also increase because of surgical trauma, wound healing, comorbid systemic and ocular diseases, and the use of punctal plugs. Studies that examine only mechanical sensitivity of the cornea cannot detect changes in chemical

Blink patterns and lid-contact times in dry-eye and normal subjects.

PURPOSE: To classify blinks in dry eye and normal subjects into six subtypes, and to define the blink rate and duration within each type of blink, as well as the total lid-contact time/minute. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a single-centered, prospective, double-blind study of eleven dry-eye and ten normal subjects. Predefined subjects watched a video while blinks were recorded for 10 minutes. Partial blinks were classified by percentage closure of maximal palpebral fissure opening: 25%, 50%, 75%. Complete blinks were characterized as full (>0 seconds), extended (>0.1 seconds), or superexten

Information processing bottlenecks in macaque posterior parietal cortex: an attentional blink?

When two brief stimuli are presented in rapid succession, our ability to attend and recognize the second stimulus is impaired if our attentional resources are devoted to processing the first. Such inability (termed the "attentional blink" in human studies) arises around 200-500 ms following the onset of the first stimulus. We trained two monkeys on a delayed-match-to-sample task where both the location and orientation of two successively presented grating patches had to be matched. When the delay between the two gratings was varied, monkey's behavioral performance (d') was affected in a way th

Blink reflexes in chronic tension-type headache patients and healthy controls.

OBJECTIVE: To use the R2 component of nociceptive-specific blink reflex (nBR) to probe the trigeminal nociceptive system and compare chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) patients and healthy controls. METHODS: Thirty patients with CTTH and 30 age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects were included. nBR were evoked by painful electrical pulses (0.5ms duration), delivered by a concentric electrode placed on the left lower forehead close to the supraorbital foramen. The EMG activity in the orbicularis oculi muscles was recorded bilaterally. The electrical stimulus intensities to evoke indivi

Cardiac modulation of startle: effects on eye blink and higher cognitive processing.

Cardiac cycle time has been shown to affect pre-attentive brainstem startle processes, such as the magnitude of acoustically evoked reflexive startle eye blinks. These effects were attributed to baro-afferent feedback mechanisms. However, it remains unclear whether cardiac cycle time plays a role in higher startle-related cognitive processes, as well. Twenty-five volunteers responded first by 'fast as possible' button pushes (reaction time, RT), and second, rated perceived intensity of 60 acoustic startle stimuli (85, 95, or 105 dB; 50 ms duration; binaural; instantaneous rise time), which wer

Nociceptive blink reflex and visual evoked potential habituations are correlated in migraine.

BACKGROUND: Lack of habituation, as reported in migraine patients between attacks for evoked cortical responses, was also recently found for the nociceptive blink reflex (nBR) mediated by brainstem neurons. It is not known if both brain stem and cortical habituation deficits are correlated in the same patient, which would favor a common underlying mechanism. OBJECTIVE: To search for intraindividual correlations between habituation of pattern reversal-visual evoked potentials and that of the nociception-specific blink reflex in migraineurs and in healthy volunteers (HV). METHODS: We recorded

The roles of blink reflex and sympathetic skin response in multiple sclerosis diagnosis.

The neurological history and examination are important in multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis, but early and accurate diagnosis of MS often requires judicious use of paraclinical information. Electrophysiologic techniques have an important role in demonstrating lesions that are clincally silent but magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is accepted as the most sensitive paraclincal test for detecting asymptomatic dissemination in space for MS patients. In order to test the sensitivity of electrophysiologic techniques in diagnosing asymptomatic MS lesions, we performed blink reflex (BR) and sympathetic

[The blink reflex in the electrophysiologic exploration of Bell's palsy and its prognostic value].

Conventional electrophysiology of the facial nerve gives only information about the functional condition of its extracranial segment. The blink-reflex triggered for the electric stimulation of supraorbital nerve allows the study of the whole nerve path, even the intraosteal, where the great majority of its pathology settles. We have realized this tests in 43 Bell's palsy cases (at the beginning of the paralysis and three weeks later) and correlated the results with the clinic course, in order to set up the pronostic value of the procedure. The cases with shorter tendency of blink reflex along

Blink reflex recovery in facial weakness: an electrophysiologic study of adaptive changes.

OBJECTIVE: To study the electrophysiologic effects of unilateral facial weakness on the excitability of the neuronal circuitry underlying blink reflex, and to localize the site of changes in blink reflex excitability that occur after facial weakness. BACKGROUND: Eyelid kinematic studies suggest that adaptive modification of the blink reflex occurs after facial weakness. Such adaptations generally optimize eye closure. A report of blepharospasm following Bell's palsy suggests that dysfunctional adaptive changes can also occur. METHODS: Blink reflex recovery was evaluated with paired stimulati

Blink reflex excitability is abnormal in patients with periodic leg movements in sleep.

The excitability of the late component of the blink reflex was measured in 19 patients with periodic leg movements in sleep (PLMS) and in 18 control patients with other sleep complaints. PLMS patients were not different from controls regarding age, body mass index, and apneas and hypopneas per hour of sleep. The latencies of the R1 and R2 components of the blink reflex were not different between the groups. However, in PLMS, the excitability of the R2 response was markedly enhanced: The second R2 response to a pair of stimuli given at an interval of 500 ms was in PLMS 59.5% (range 21-87%) of t

Blink reflex recovery curves in blepharospasm, torticollis spasmodica, and hemifacial spasm.

R1 and R2 blink reflex responses to single and paired stimuli were investigated in 23 control subjects, 21 patients with blepharospasm (BSP), 20 patients with torticollis spasmodica (TS), and 23 with hemifacial spasm (HFS). For paired stimuli, we compared measurements of area and peak responses at two and three times R2 threshold. R1 and R2 indices were calculated as the average of the recovery values at 0.5-, 0.3-, and 0.21-s interstimulus intervals to test individual patients. Peak amplitude measurements at three times R2 threshold were optimal. The R2 index was abnormal in 67% of BSP patien
