Regional status, epidemiology and impact of Taenia solium cysticercosis in Western and Central Africa.

In West Africa, Taenia solium cysticercosis in both pigs and man has been reported in Benin, Burkina-Faso, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Senegal and Togo, and although official data are lacking, T. solium is anticipated to be present in most of the pig-raising regions of other West African countries as well. In some regions of Nigeria, the prevalence of porcine cysticercosis and human taeniosis is quite high (20.5 and 8.6%, respectively). Surprisingly, however, no cases of human cysticercosis have been reported, although epilepsy is very common. Large epidemiological surveys have only been carried out i

Double burden of malnutrition among under-five children in Eastern and Southern African countries.

There is limited evidence on the burden and drivers of the co-occurrence of overweight/obesity and undernutrition at the individual level in low- and middle-income countries. This gap hinders the design of double-duty actions (DDAs) that can effectively address all forms of malnutrition. This multi-country study aimed to determine the magnitude of double burden of malnutrition (DBM) among under five children and identify household and individual level determinants in Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) countries. We pooled data of 79,394 children aged 6-59 months, collected from Demographic and

Prevalence of Escherichia coli, Campylobacter spp. and Salmonella spp. in the East African Community: a systematic literature review and meta-analysis.

Pathogenic Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp. and Campylobacter spp. are bacteria associated with foodborne diseases. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigates the prevalence of these pathogens in foods sold across seven East African Community (EAC) countries and identifies key risk factors for contamination. A comprehensive search for peer-reviewed papers and grey literature was conducted in six databases (PubMed, CAB Direct, African Journals Online, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science), as well as 12 online repositories. The review encompassed studies published in En

Prevalence and determinants of HIV among reproductive-age women (15-49 years) in Africa from 2010 to 2019: a multilevel analysis of demographic and health survey data.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains the leading cause of global morbidity and mortality. The incidence of HIV is disproportionately higher in Sub-Saharan regions, particularly the Southern African sub-region, which is the most affected region and accounts for 77% of all new HIV infections in the region. Thus, the aim of this study was to identify the determinants of HIV among reproductive-age women in Africa. METHODS: This study was conducted among reproductive-age women in Africa, based on secondary data obtained from the Demographic Health Survey (DHS) conducted between 2

Factors of acute respiratory infection among under-five children across sub-Saharan African countries using machine learning approaches.

Symptoms of Acute Respiratory infections (ARIs) among under-five children are a global health challenge. We aimed to train and evaluate ten machine learning (ML) classification approaches in predicting symptoms of ARIs reported by mothers among children younger than 5 years in sub-Saharan African (sSA) countries. We used the most recent (2012-2022) nationally representative Demographic and Health Surveys data of 33 sSA countries. The air pollution covariates such as global annual surface particulate matter (PM 2.5) and the nitrogen dioxide available in the form of raster images were obtained f

Heterogeneity in enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli and shigella infections in children under 5 years of age from 11 African countries: a subnational approach quantifying risk, mortality, morbidity, and stunting.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhoea, a global cause of child mortality and morbidity, is linked to adverse consequences including childhood stunting and death from other diseases. Few studies explore how diarrhoeal mortality varies subnationally, especially by cause, which is important for targeting investments. Even fewer examine indirect effects of diarrhoeal morbidity on child mortality. We estimated the subnational distribution of mortality, morbidity, and childhood stunting attributable to enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and shigella infection in children younger than 5 years from 11 eastern an

The interlinked crisis: pharmaceutical pollution as a driver of antimicrobial resistance in East Africa: an urgent call for ecopharmacovigilance and one health approach.

Pharmaceutical pollution is a growing environmental and public health issue in East Africa. It is fueled by rapid population growth, increased pharmaceutical consumption, insufficient wastewater treatment, and pharmaceutical uses. Leftover pharmaceuticals enter into water and land ecosystems through human and animal waste, hospital and industry discharges, and inadequate waste management practices. These pollutants present ecological dangers and significantly contribute to the rise and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), posing a threat to both the environment and public health. This nar

Evaluation of vaccine immunity against tetanus, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella and varicella, in migrant adolescents aged 13 to 18 years arriving in Geneva in 2023.

The recent surge in unaccompanied minor asylum seekers (UMAS) arriving in Switzerland presents significant public health challenges, particularly regarding immunization. Many of these adolescents lack vaccination documentation, requiring catch-up vaccination strategies. This study aimed to evaluate immunity against tetanus, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella and varicella among UMAS upon arrival in Switzerland, to optimize vaccination strategies, and provide protection. This retrospective observational study included 100 UMAS patients followed at Geneva University Hospitals in 2023. Patients

Evolving Epidemiology of Mpox in Africa in 2024.

BACKGROUND: For decades after the identification of mpox in humans in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in 1970, the disease was largely confined to the rural areas of Central and West Africa and thus did not garner broad attention. On August 13, 2024, mpox was declared a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security (PHECS) by the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), a notice that was followed the next day by a declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organization. METHODS: In this study we analyzed all mp

Association between the survey-based women's empowerment index (SWPER) and intimate partner violence in sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is high among women of reproductive age in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). However, empowering women enables them to confront and mitigate IPV. In this study, we examined the association between the survey-based women's empowerment index (SWPER) and IPV in SSA. METHODS: We used data from the Demographic and Health Surveys of 19 countries conducted from 2015 to 2021. Our study was restricted to a weighted sample of 82,203 women of reproductive age who were married or cohabiting. We used spatial maps to show the proportions of women who experienced past-yea

Spatial distribution of schistosomiasis and treatment needs in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review and geostatistical analysis.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis affects more than 200 million individuals, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa, but empirical estimates of the disease burden in this region are unavailable. We used geostatistical modelling to produce high-resolution risk estimates of infection with Schistosoma spp and of the number of doses of praziquantel treatment needed to prevent morbidity at different administrative levels in 44 countries. METHODS: We did a systematic review to identify surveys including schistosomiasis prevalence data in sub-Saharan Africa via PubMed, ISI Web of Science, and African Journals Onlin

Pantoea coffeiphila sp. nov., cause of the 'potato taste' of Arabica coffee from the African Great Lakes region.

Six isolates recovered from coffee seeds giving off a potato-like flavour were studied. Gene sequencing (rrs and rpoB) showed they belong to the genus Pantoea. By DNA-DNA hybridization, the isolates constituted a genomic species with less than 17% relatedness to 96 strains representing enterobacterial species. Multilocus sequence analysis (gyrB, rpoB, atpD and infB genes) showed the isolates to represent a discrete species of the genus Pantoea. Nutritional versatility of the novel species was poor. The novel species is proposed as Pantoea coffeiphila sp.nov. and its type strain is Ca04(T) ( =C
