Circulating fibroblast growth factor-21 in coronary artery disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF21) is a metabolic regulator involved in glucose and lipid homeostasis and has emerged as a potential biomarker in cardiometabolic diseases. The relationship between circulating FGF21 levels and coronary artery disease (CAD) remains unclear. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to clarify this association and assess its clinical relevance. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched for observational studies reporting circulating FGF21 levels in adult CAD patients. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence

Association between clinical features of isolated coronary artery ectasia and circulating levels of inflammatory markers.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Coronary artery ectasia (CAE) can lead to adverse clinical outcomes, including coronary spasm, thrombosis, dissection and myocardial ischaemia. In patients with isolated CAE- in the absence of coronary artery stenosis, clinical symptoms such as angina pectoris may still occur. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between clinical features and circulating inflammatory marker levels in patients with isolated CAE. METHODS: Patients undergoing coronary angiography (CAG) who consented to participate underwent cardiovascular disease and risk assessment. The study en

The effect of empagliflozin on circulating endothelial progenitor cells in patients with diabetes and stable coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with premature atherosclerotic disease, coronary artery disease (CAD) and chronic heart failure (HF), leading to increased morbidity and mortality. Sodium-Glucose Co-transporter 2 Inhibitors (SGLT2i) exhibit cardioprotective benefits beyond glucose lowering, reducing the risk of major cardiovascular events (MACE) and HF hospitalizations in patients with DM and CAD. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are bone marrow-derived cells involved in vascular repair, mobilized in response to vascular injury. The number and function of circulating EPCs (c

Cardiometabolic Co-morbidity Burden and Circulating Biomarkers in Patients With Chronic Coronary Disease in the ISCHEMIA Trials.

Cardiometabolic co-morbidities, diabetes (DM), hypertension (HTN), and obesity contribute to cardiovascular disease. Circulating biomarkers facilitate prognostication for patients with cardiovascular disease. We explored the relation between cardiometabolic co-morbidity burden in patients with chronic coronary disease and biomarkers of myocardial stretch, injury, inflammation, and platelet activity. We analyzed participants from the International Study of Comparative Health Effectiveness with Medical and Invasive Approaches (ISCHEMIA) trials biorepository with plasma biomarkers (N-terminal pro

Circulating Interleukin-22 in Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction Undergoing Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention.

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) represents an important clinical manifestation of coronary artery disease (CAD) and is characterized by a particularly poor prognosis. Myocardial reperfusion through primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) is imperative in the event of acute ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Interleukin-22 (IL-22) regulates immune and inflammatory responses. This interleukin has been described in the scenario of the CAD, but there are no data in patients with STEMI undergoing PPCI. Objectives: The goals of this study were to investigate the differences in circu

Circulating amino acid signature features urea cycle alterations associated with coronary artery disease.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) remains a leading cause of death worldwide and imposes a substantial socioeconomic burden on healthcare. Improving risk stratification in clinical practice could help to combat this burden. As amino acids are biologically active metabolites whose involvement in CAD remains largely unknown, this study investigated associations between circulating amino acid levels and CAD phenotypes. A high-coverage quantitative liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry approach was applied to acquire the serum amino acids profile of age- and sex-coarsened-matched patients with CAD (

Circulating levels of galectin-3 and coronary microvascular perfusion in rheumatoid arthritis patients with suppressed inflammation.

OBJECTIVE: Cardiovascular manifestations are the leading cause of mortality in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Galectin-3, a lectin protein with major role in cellular, inflammatory, and fibrotic processes, has been introduced as a novel cardiac biomarker. We hypothesized that patients with RA present increased levels of galectin-3, and investigated potential associations with arterial stiffness and coronary microvascular dysfunction. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled RA patients and non-RA individuals without cardiovascular comorbidities. Galectin-3 and high-sensitivity C-reactive prot

Circulating microRNA-126 &122 in patients with coronary artery disease: Correlation with small dense LDL.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease (CAD) and stroke are major causes of cardiovascular diseases related deaths. Conventional risk factors cannot explain the changes in atherosclerosis. New and useful diagnostic markers are required. MicroRNAs are small, noncoding RNA that regulate the gene expression implicated in the pathogenesis of various cardiovascular diseases. Endothelial dysfunction is involved in the early event of the atherosclerosis process. AIMS: The current study was designed to evaluate the vascular endothelium-enriched miRNAs would be altered in CAD patients. METHODS: Circulat

Circulating trimethyllysine and risk of acute myocardial infarction in patients with suspected stable coronary heart disease.

BACKGROUND: The carnitine precursor trimethyllysine (TML) is associated with progression of atherosclerosis, possibly through a relationship with trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO). Riboflavin is a cofactor in TMAO synthesis. We examined prospective relationships of circulating TML and TMAO with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and potential effect modifications by riboflavin status. METHODS: By Cox modelling, risk associations were examined amongst 4098 patients (71.8% men) with suspected stable angina pectoris. Subgroup analyses were performed according to median plasma riboflavin. RESULTS: Du

Minimal invasive extracorporeal circulation represents a dominant technique in coronary artery bypass grafting; insights from a cost-utility economic analysis.

IntroductionTo evaluate the cost-utility of minimal invasive extracorporeal circulation (MiECC) versus conventional cardiopulmonary bypass (cCPB) in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) over a 7-years horizon.MethodA cohort-based, deterministic cost-utility model was constructed from the Greek NHS perspective over a 7-year period. Clinical inputs were derived from a meta-analysis including 4849 patients. Direct medical costs for intensive care unit (ICU) and ward stay, blood transfusions, intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) use, and perfusion circuits were applied to estimate the cost of care.

Prognostic Nutritional Index is Associated with the Degree of Coronary Collateral Circulation in Stable Angina Patients with Chronic Total Occlusion.

BACKGROUND: Coronary collateral circulation (CCC) can effectively improve myocardial blood supply to the area of CTO (chronic total coronary occlusion) and can, thus, improve the prognosis of patients with stable coronary syndrome (SCS). The degree of inflammation and some inflammation markers were associated with the development of collaterals. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether prognostic nutritional index (PNI) has an association with the development of CCC in patients with SCS. METHODS: A total of 400 SCS patients with the presence of CTO in at least one major epicardial coronary artery w
