A comparative split-face study of cryosurgery and trichloroacetic acid 100% peels in the treatment of HIV-associated disseminated facial molluscum contagiosum.

A comparative split-face study of 20 participants with disseminated facial molluscum contagiosum (MC) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection was conducted to assess treatment with cryosurgery (left side of the face) versus trichloroacetic acid (TCA) 100% peels (right side of the face). A total of 2 treatments were administered at 4-week intervals. At week 8, treatment with TCA 100% proved to be superior to cryosurgery with an average reduction in lesion count of 90% versus 55%, respectively. Demonstrating a statistically significant rate of lesion clearance (P < or = .05), TCA 100% a

Cryosurgery and acrylic cementation as surgical adjuncts in the treatment of aggressive (benign) bone tumors. Analysis of 25 patients below the age of 21.

This article reviews the clinical experience with cryosurgery (use of liquid nitrogen) and acrylic cementation (polymethylmethacrylate; PMMA) in the treatment of aggressive, benign bone sarcomas and the biologic basis of this technique. The results of 25 patients below the age of 21 treated by cryosurgery, with an average follow-up period of 60.8 months, are reported. Three approaches to surgical reconstruction were used: Group 1 (four patients) had cryosurgery with no reconstruction, Group 2 (13 patients) had bone graft reconstruction alone, and Group 3 (eight patients) had composite osteosyn

Use of a combination of an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid, an antibacterial agent and an antifungal in the local post-operative treatment of cutaneo-mucosal diseases following cryosurgery.

Forty-two patients undergoing cryosurgery for skin diseases were treated by means of the simultaneous application of three creams, the respective bases of which were beclomethasone dipropionate, sodium fusidate and ketoconazole. The treatment produced excellent results, preventing bacterial and/or mycotic superinfections and relieving the edema and erythema caused by the operation in 97.6% of cases. Local tolerance was optimal in all cases; no adverse reactions of any kind being reported.

Repetitive Daylight Photodynamic Therapy versus Cryosurgery for Prevention of Actinic Keratoses in Photodamaged Facial Skin: A Prospective, Randomized Controlled Multicentre Two-armed Study.

Actinic keratoses are a chronic condition in ultraviolet-damaged skin, with a risk of progressing to invasive skin cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the preventive potential of field-directed repetitive daylight photodynamic therapy for actinic keratoses. A randomized trial was performed, including 58 patients with ≥5 actinic keratoses on photodamaged facial skin, who received either 5 full-face sessions of daylight photodynamic therapy within a period of 2 years or lesion-directed cryosurgery. Primary outcome was the mean cumulative number of new actinic keratoses developed bet

One-week treatment with 0.5% fluorouracil cream prior to cryosurgery in patients with actinic keratoses: a double-blind, vehicle-controlled, long-term study.

Topical fluorouracil is currently approved for the treatment of actinic keratosis (AK) and is often used prior to or following cryosurgery as interval therapy in patients with severe AK lesions. No randomized, controlled studies are available to confirm anecdotal evidence suggesting pretreatment with fluorouracil is beneficial. This prospective, randomized, double-blind, vehicle-controlled study evaluated the effect of pretreatment with 0.5% fluorouracil cream (FC; Carac) or a vehicle cream (VC) once daily for 7 days to the face plus scalp, ears, neck, and/or lips in patients with > or = 5 vis

Cryosurgery as a Single Agent and in Combination with Intralesional Corticosteroids Is Effective on Young, Small Keloids and Induces Characteristic Histological and Immunohistological Changes: A Prospective Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: As the pathogenesis of keloids is poorly understood, there is no sound biological basis of keloid management. Few controlled therapeutic studies have been published, and recurrences are a major reason for treatment failure. OBJECTIVE: To detect efficacy and safety of cryosurgery regimens on keloids and the occurring biological changes caused by the treatment. METHODS: This prospective randomized study compared efficacy and tolerability as well as histological/immunohistochemical effects of liquid nitrogen contact cryosurgery as a single regimen (group A) and combined with intrale

Review of 16 cases of aneurysmal bone cyst in the proximal femur treated by extended curettage and cryosurgery with reconstruction using autogenous nonvascularized fibula graft.

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is an aggressive benign lesion that may sometimes be difficult to treat. Lesions that occur in the proximal femur require to be addressed aggressively because of the high rate of local recurrence and the risk of fracture. Few articles report the experience of management of ABC in the proximal femur. This location presents a surgical challenge due to its anatomical and biomechanical peculiarity. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 16 cases with ABC in the proximal femur that were treated in our institution between 2005 and 2014, utilizing extended curett

Effect of timing, dose and interstitial versus nanoparticle delivery of tumor necrosis factor alpha in combinatorial adjuvant cryosurgery treatment of ELT-3 uterine fibroid tumor.

Cryosurgery has shown potential as a minimally invasive technology for tumor treatment. However, incomplete destruction followed by tumor recurrence after cryosurgery is a common drawback. This study characterizes several variables in the cryoadjuvant TNF-alpha enhancement of conservative cryosurgery (i.e. freezing to the visible edge) of ELT-3 (uterine leiomyoma) tumor in a female nude mouse model. The variables include pretreatment time, mode of TNF-alpha delivery (native vs. CYT-6091, a PEGylated 33 nm colloidal gold core nanoparticle) and dose of TNF-alpha. Survival and tumor growth delay

The natural history of cervical cryosurgical healing. The minimal effect of debridement of the cervical eschar [see comment].

BACKGROUND: Cryosurgery is a favored treatment method for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) among family physicians, in part because it is inexpensive and requires the least technical training and skill. Although cervical cryosurgery has been used for more than 30 years, the natural history of the postprocedure process has never been described. The primary purpose of our study was to describe the natural history of the healing process after cervical cryosurgery. A secondary purpose was to determine the effect of mechanical debridement of the cervical eschar on the symptoms of healing.
