Early Reading and Math Developmental Trajectories: Examining Influences of Specific Learning Disabilities and Socioeconomic Status.

This study examined the effects of socioeconomic status (SES) and specific learning disability (SLD) on reading and math developmental trajectories from kindergarten through fifth grade in the U.S. Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten class:2011 dataset. Using a retrospective classification based on SLD status at the end of fifth grade, we compared reading and math skills at school entry and growth over time between children with SLD (N = 540) and their peers without disabilities (N = 8,650). Although most children with SLD were not identified until third grade or later, this group

Exploring the Influences of Sleep Disturbances in Mothers of School-Aged Children With Developmental Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Although sleep is a modifiable health behavior linked to health and daytime functioning, studies have limited exploration of how mother and child-related factors interplay with mothers' sleep disturbance in mothers of children with developmental disabilities. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore the nature of sleep disturbances, their impact on health and daytime functioning, and strategies used to promote restful sleep in mothers of children with developmental disabilities. METHODS: Using a qualitative descriptive approach, 13 mothers of school-aged children (6-12 years) with developm

Application of machine learning to predict employment attainment among individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Promoting desirable employment outcomes for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities has been an important task for decades. However, the statistics indicate inequitable employment outcomes still exist; including underrepresentation in the workforce and employment in a part-time, low-wage, and segregated setting. One way to address the gap is to review and promote individual and environmental characteristics that are related to enhanced employment outcomes. For this study, we used machine learning approaches to investigate the predictors of employment status in individuals

Digital motor intervention effects on motor performance of individuals with developmental disabilities: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Individuals (i.e. children/young adults) with developmental disabilities (DDs) and intellectual disabilities (IDs) often display a variety of physical and motor impairments. It is well known that participation in motor activities can positively impact the development of children's cognitive and social skills. Recently, virtual and digital technologies (e.g. video conferencing applications, virtual reality and video gaming) have been increasingly used to promote better physical/motor outcomes. The efficacy of digital technologies in improving motor outcomes for those with DD/ID vari

The Outcomes of Liver Transplantation in Highly Dependent Incapacitated Patients with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Background/Objectives: Data regarding the outcomes of liver transplantation in disabled, highly dependent, and legally incapacitated adults are scarce, likely due to the infrequency of these procedures in such populations. Multicenter studies in adult transplant centers have shown that patients with coexisting intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) may be denied transplantation because of their expected low longevity and the complexities associated with managing post-transplant care. We examined the long-term patient and graft outcomes in highly dependent, incapacitated patients wi

Individualized participatory care planning for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities: a qualitative descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Goal setting for persons within health and social care environments can be a challenging task; although health and social care settings aim to address a person's care needs, the literature tends to focus on health. Person-centred care should encompass the goals/needs/wants of the person, whether these goals focus on career, relationship, and/or health domains. To understand how a person-centred participatory goal setting process is carried out in a care environment, we used an integrated knowledge translation approach. METHODS: We conducted 11 semi-structured interviews with commu

Chronic Health Conditions Among Adults With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in a State Medicaid System.

Despite a growing number of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and documented risk for adverse outcomes as they age, little is known about the health and healthcare patterns of adults with different IDD throughout adulthood. This study uses Wisconsin Medicaid claims data to characterize health conditions among adults with IDD. Results indicate high prevalence of asthma, diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension. Heart disease rates were particularly high, having been observed among 39% of autistic adults, 64% of autistic adults with intellectual disability (ID), 67%

Remote Delivery of Allied and Behavioral Healthcare During COVID-19 for Children With Developmental Disabilities.

OBJECTIVE: Many children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities (DD) transitioned to telehealth services due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our objectives were to describe reductions in allied and behavioral healthcare services and receipt of caregiver training to deliver services at home because of COVID-19 for children with ASD and other DD, and factors associated with worse response to remote delivery of services for children with ASD. METHOD: Prior to the pandemic, children 2 to 5 years of age were enrolled in a multi-site case-control study and completed a de

Diagnosing Pain in Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: Current State and Novel Technological Solutions.

Pain assessment poses a challenge in several groups of clients, yet specific barriers arise when it comes to pain assessment of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), due mostly to communication challenges preventing valid and reliable self-reports. Despite increased interest in pain assessment of those diagnosed with IDD within recent years, little is known about pain behavior in this group. The present article overviews the current state of pain diagnosis for individuals with IDD, focusing on existing pain assessment scales. In addition, it suggests technological

Individuals with developmental disabilities make their own stylistic contributions to text written with physical facilitation.

INTRODUCTION: For individuals with developmental disabilities (DD) such as autism, Down syndrome, or cerebral palsy, learning to express with language is a two-fold challenge because atypical cognitive capacity is compounded by sensorimotor coordination deficits. One approach to assisting linguistic expression in these individuals is to physically support them, for example, by touching their torso or arm as they type. The neurophysiological mechanism of such motor assistance for linguistic expression is not known, but recently it has been proposed that light touch may reduce the cognitive load

Using Social Network Analysis to Measure Social Inclusion for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

The aim of this perspective is to describe the theory and practical steps of using principles of social network analysis to help measure the social inclusion of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Social inclusion for those with disabilities has become an important area of focus of rehabilitative professionals in the past decade. Social inclusion is comprised of the domains participation and social interaction. Decreased social inclusion can negatively impact quality of life and health. Individuals with IDD continue to experience barriers to social inclusion suc

Assessing processing speed among individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities: A match-to-sample paradigm.

Speeded Matching (SpM) is a new processing speed match-to-sample test within the NIH Toolbox Cognitive Battery. It was designed to developmentally extend feasibility to younger children or individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD). SpM reduces cognitive demands to tapping an identical match as opposed to judging and indicating whether two stimuli are identical. In this study, we piloted SpM among 148 participants with fragile X syndrome, Down syndrome, or other intellectual disabilities (chronological age mean = 17.8 years, sd = 5.4; nonverbal mental age mean = 65 month

Future planning for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities: Perspectives of siblings in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Future planning has emerged as a global issue for families of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities due to the longer lives and limited long-term services and supports in the adult disability system. While it has received greater attention, most future planning studies only included parents of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities within the context of European or American countries. The purpose of this study was to examine future planning among siblings of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in South Korea. ME

Association Between Plasma Metabolites and Psychometric Scores Among Children With Developmental Disabilities: Investigating Sex-Differences.

Background: Developmental disabilities are defined by delays in learning, language, and behavior, yet growing evidence has revealed disturbances in metabolic systems that may also be present. Little is known about whether these metabolic issues contribute to the symptoms or severity of these disabilities, or whether sex plays a role in these associations, given that boys are disproportionately affected by some developmental disabilities. Here we sought to investigate the correlation between psychometric scores, sex, and the plasma metabolome. Methods: The plasma metabolomes of children with au

A Serious Game-Derived Index for Detecting Children With Heterogeneous Developmental Disabilities: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Developmental disabilities are a set of heterogeneous delays or difficulties in one or more areas of neuropsychological development. Considering that childhood is an essential stage of brain development and developmental delays lead to personal or social burdens, the early detection of childhood developmental disabilities is important. However, early screening for developmental disabilities has been a challenge because of the fear of positive results, expensive tests, differences in diagnosis depending on examiners' abilities, and difficulty in diagnosis arising from the need for l

The experiences of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities in inclusive schools in Accra, Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Inclusive education is internationally recognised as the best strategy for providing equitable quality education to all children. However, because of the unique challenges they often present, children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) are often excluded from inclusive schools. To date, limited research on inclusion has been conducted involving children with IDD as active participants. OBJECTIVES: The study sought to understand the experiences of children with IDDs in learning in inclusive schools in Accra, Ghana. METHOD: A qualitative descriptive design was
