An interview study of people with learning disabilities' experience of, and satisfaction with, group analytic therapy.

A number of clinicians have developed psychodynamic treatments for people with learning disabilities, but there have been few studies assessing the impact of psychodynamic therapy with this population. In particular, there have been no studies in which investigators have asked clients about their experience of psychodynamic treatment. The current study is an attempt to rectify this by exploring people with learning disabilities' experiences of, and satisfaction with, two psychodynamic groups provided by an inner city service. Nine learning-disabled clients, four from a sexual offenders' group

Longitudinal study of psychiatric symptoms, disability, mortality, and emigration among Bosnian refugees.

CONTEXT: Evidence is emerging that psychiatric disorders are common in populations affected by mass violence. Previously, we found associations among depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and disability in a Bosnian refugee cohort. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether previously observed associations continue over time and are associated with mortality emigration to another region. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Three-year follow-up study conducted in 1999 among 534 adult Bosnian refugees originally living in a refugee camp in Croatia. At follow-up, 376 (70.4%) remained living i

Marital disruption and long-term work disability. A four-year prospective study.

Data from a community-based four-year prospective study were used to investigate the relationship between marital disruption and long-term work disability. In 1990, all inhabitants of the municipality Ullensaker, Norway, belonging to six cohorts (20-22 years, 30-32 years, 40-42 years, 50-52 years, 60-62 years and 70-72 years) were sent a questionnaire. Of the 1,359 respondents who were working, married or cohabiting, and not older than 62 years, 1,115 (82%) returned a second questionnaire four years later (1994). Separation or divorce between 1990 and 1994 was related to long-term work disabil

The career success of an adult with a learning disability: a psychosocial study of amnesic-semantic aphasia.

B.I. is a 39-year-old, intellectually gifted (IQ = 130) man with learning disabilities who, without known cause, demonstrated symptoms of amnesic-semantic aphasia at age 13. This led to placement in a public school class for students with mild mental retardation and to his dropping out of school after repeating Grade 9. His aphasia is associated with a severe deficit in speech comprehension, poor reading and writing, spatial confusion, and episodic memory loss. We studied the remarkable behavioral and cognitive adjustments that have enabled him to lead a fulfilling life and become a highly suc

First diagnosis of severe mental and physical disability: a study of doctor-parent communication.

This study investigates factors associated with satisfaction with medical communication at the time of diagnosis of a child's severe mental or physical disability. Two competing social psychological models that have been used to account for parent patient satisfaction are tested: Korsch's (1968) affective model and Ley's (1977) cognitive model. One hundred and sixty six mothers of children with severe learning disabilities were questioned about the time when their child's disability was first diagnosed. Measures included the child's age when diagnosis was made, the length of time parents had b

Problems in relation to independent living: a retrospective study of physically disabled school-leavers.

Problems in relation to independent living were studied in a cohort of 80 physically disabled young people on average five years after leaving school. 38 per cent were living, or planned to live, independently. This group was more likely to be of average intellectual ability and to have a physical impairment other than cerebral palsy. Of the 35 per cent who felt that their physical disabilities were such that they would be unable to manage without care from parents in the family home, at least 80 per cent needed daily help with personal hygiene, dressing and travel. 90 per cent of the parents

[Burden on the caregiver of people with disabilities secondary to neurological damage. A multicenter study in Argentina].

INTRODUCTION: Caregiver burden encompasses the physical, financial, and psychosocial impact of caring for a person, constituting a risk factor for the deterioration of the caregiver's health and quality of life. The primary objective was to quantify caregiver burden in primary caregivers of individuals with disabilities secondary to neurological damage in four healthcare centers in Argentina. The secondary objective was to explore its association with the duration of disability, level of functional independence, hours of care, and the caregiver's gender. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a mult

Barriers and Opportunities in Anesthesia Care for Patients With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: A Qualitative Study.

Health disparities among individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) remain a significant public health concern requiring complex, interdisciplinary care tailored to communication, behavioral, and individualized needs. Despite frequent exposure to surgical and procedural interventions, nurse anesthesiology programs provide limited formal education to prepare clinicians for this population. Most importantly, the role of nurse anesthesiologists across the perioperative continuum remains underrepresented in discussions of IDD-focused care. This qualitative phenomenological

Cognitive appraisal processes mediate postinjury pain and disability: A longitudinal observational study.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: Psychological appraisal processes of pain catastrophizing (PC) and perceived injustice (PI) are involved in the transition to postinjury disability. Although these factors are modifiable and may serve as ideal intervention targets to improve recovery, they have not been examined as mediators between acute pain and postinjury disability. The present study utilized longitudinal mediation to examine acute PC and PI as mechanisms by which acute pain contributes to 90-day disability in adults after a motor vehicle crash. RESEARCH METHOD/DESIGN: This study represents secondary da

Cardiovascular Disease Risk Among Young Adults with Disabilities: A Nationwide Cohort Study.

AIMS: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk may be under-recognized in young adults living with long-standing disability. We evaluated whether disability is associated with incident CVD risk in adults aged 20-39 years beyond conventional risk factors and whether risk varies by disability type, severity, and duration. METHODS: We analysed 7,682,700 Korean adults aged 20-39 years without prior CVD who underwent national health screening (2009-2014). Disability was ascertained using a standardized, medically certified national certification system. Individuals with disabilities (n = 91,500; physical
