A 72-year-old man noticed progressive weakness of both upper limbs, more severe on the left side, 9 months after an electric shock of a 20,000 V alternating current. He had diffuse scars of superficial burns with skin graft in four limbs, more on the right side. A neurological examination revealed diffuse muscle atrophy, weakness and fasciculation in both upper limbs, predominantly on the left side, hyper-reflexia in four limbs with mildly exaggerated jaw jerk, left Babinski sign, and mild decrease of touch and pain sensation in the right C6 and C7 segments. Painful dysesthesia was present in

OBJECTIVE: Individuals exposed to an electrical injury develop a variety of complications, several of which are recognized years after the initial electrical shock. Alteration in gastrointestinal and nervous system function has been described in these patients, yet the frequency and character of these abnormalities are poorly understood. We reviewed records of 40 individuals with a history of electrical injury to identify evidence of delayed onset of complications.
METHODS: Forty consecutive patients with electrical shock injuries were monitored for up to 5 yr after their traumatic event usin

We describe a patient who developed right arm dystonia following an electrical injury. The patient's arm remained adducted, and flexed at the elbow and wrist, with all movement resulting in pain and tremor. Surface electromyographic evaluation revealed constant tonic activity of multiple upper and lower arm muscles at rest, that was not distractible. Voluntary and passive movement of the elbow or wrist resulted in high amplitude EMG activity, with motor grouping at 11 Hz at the elbow and 8 Hz at the wrist. Although a diagnosis of psychogenic dystonia was entertained, the stereotyped nature of

When patients enter the Rehabilitation Centre a therapeutic electrical stimulation programme is immediately initiated. Three groups of patients were identified: (i) those in whom an improvement of both voluntary and stimulated muscle force was observed, (ii) those with an increase in stimulation response only, and (iii) patients in whom no effect of electrical stimulation training could be recorded. Isometric measurement of voluntary and stimulated knee joint torque revealed that in a great number of patients one leg was severely paralysed while the other leg was under sufficient voluntary con

Vascular damage is a frequent and serious complication following high voltage injuries (greater than 1000 V), but does not seem to have been described with low-voltage current. We report an unusual case with delayed thromboses in the hand arteries of a young, healthy 24 yo man, after a 220 V electric shock. Two weeks after the accident he developed a successively increasing hand ischemia with Raynaud phenomenon, and finally fingertip necroses. Angiography revealed multiple small vessel occlusion. Although systemic fibrinolysis with streptokinase was not initiated until eight weeks after the ac

OBJECTIVE: Electrical burn injuries associated with copper wire theft represent a unique and dangerous subset of injuries observed in clinical practice. Economic hardship and the high value of copper wires drive some individuals to engage in the risky act of scavenging wires, often cutting them directly from live electrical poles. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and clinical outcomes of electrical burn injuries resulting from copper wire theft.
METHODS: This retrospective analysis reviewed medical records of patients presenting with electrical burns caused by contact with live e

Spinal cord injury is a serious disease of the central nervous system. The electrophysiological properties of the spinal cord that are essential to maintaining neurotransmission can be impaired after the injury. Therefore, electrophysiological evaluation is becoming an important indicator of the injury extent or the therapeutic outcomes by reflecting the potential propagation of neural pathways. On the other hand, the repair of damaged nerves is one of the main goals of spinal cord injury treatment. Growing research interest has been concentrated on developing effective therapeutic solutions t

INTRODUCTION: Electric injury-induced intestinal perforation is one of rare and lethal complications. Direct injury and ischemic changes are the mechanism of intestinal perforation. Proper surgical and non-surgical management may increase the survival chance.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old male was referred from rural hospital with history of electric burn injury two days before. On arrival, the patient started complaining bloating and abdominal x-ray revealed small intestine dilation. On fourth day post-event, the symptoms worsened and abdominal CT-scan revealed free peritoneal air. Explor

Background: People with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) often have trouble remaining active because of paralysis. In the past, exercise recommendations focused on the non-paralyzed muscles in the arms, which provides limited benefits. However, recent studies show that electrical stimulation can help engage the paralyzed extremities, expanding the available muscle mass for exercise. Methods: The authors provide an evidence-based approach using expertise from diverse fields, supplemented by evidence from key studies toward the management of electrical stimulation therapies in individuals with SCIs.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Electrocution can lead to severe visceral organ damage, including pulmonary injuries. However, isolated electrical-induced pulmonary injury (EIPI) following electric shock remains underreported. This case reports a 33-year-old male who suffered an EIPI after contact with low-voltage electricity and provides a comprehensive literature review to explore the mechanisms, clinical presentation, imaging findings, and treatment of EIPI.
CASE PRESENTATION: A previously healthy 33-year-old male presented with dyspnea, chest pain, and dry cough following an electrocution wh

OBJECTIVE: Accidental ingestion of button batteries (BB), usually occurred in children and infants, will rapidly erode the esophagus and result in severe complications, even death. It has been recommended that treatment of this emergent accident as soon as possible with drinking of pH-neutralizing viscous solutions such as honey and sucralfate before surgical removal can mitigate the esophageal injury. Recently, we reported that the electric insulating solutions such as edible oils could mitigate tissue damage in BB-exposed esophageal segments. In this study, we compared the protective effect

Electrical injuries are uncommon but not completely rare. It is most prevalent in the male population, although females are also affected in the workplace or household-related activities. These injuries usually occur in situations where proper precautions are not taken by the individual and also appropriate safety drills and education for personnel are not carried out. Electrical burns affecting children are very rare, but when they do occur, it is usually due to accidental contact with exposed electrical sources. In this patient, there were severe levels of secondary complications following t
