BACKGROUND: Nano-silver fluoride (NSF) has been introduced to improve enamel lesions. The effective use of varnishes is important in the prevention of dental caries.
OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to compare the effect of conventional sodium fluoride varnish with the same varnish containing 1% and 2% silver nanoparticles (AgNP) on the surface microhardness of enamel.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The baseline surface microhardness of 40 premolar teeth was measured using a Vickers microhardness tester. After immersing the samples in a demineralizing agent for 24 h, the microhardness was measured again.

BACKGROUND: One of the most prevalent health problems affecting children worldwide is untreated caries in primary teeth. Agents to arrest caries are used to manage untreated decay in children in disadvantaged communities. Nano Silver Fluoride (NSF) overcomes the staining problems of Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF). This study compared the clinical cariostatic effect of NSF to 38% SDF for arresting caries lesions.
METHODS: The study included 360 children younger than 4 years, with at least one active lesion, ICDAS score ≥ 3, recruited from nurseries in a rural area in Alexandria, Egypt, in 2022.

Herein, we report an approach for generating thionyl fluoride (SOF2) from the commodity chemicals thionyl chloride (SOCl2) and potassium fluoride (KF). The methodology relies on a microfluidic device that can efficiently produce and dose this toxic gaseous reagent under extremely mild and safe conditions. Subsequently, the in situ-generated thionyl fluoride is reacted with an array of structurally and electronically differing carboxylic acids, leading to the direct and efficient synthesis of highly sought-after acyl fluorides. Importantly, our investigation also highlights the inherent modular

Long-term exposure to excessive fluoride causes chronic damage in the body tissues and could lead to skeletal and dental fluorosis. Cartilage damage caused by excessive fluoride intake has gained wide attention, but how fluoride accumulation blocks the development of chondrocytes is still unclear. Here, we report a negative correlation between the length and growth plate width after NaF treatments via apoptosis and autophagy, with shrinkage of cells, nuclear retraction, dissolution of chondrocytes. Whereas, fluoride exposure had no significant effect on the number and distribution of the osteo

PURPOSE: To assess the efficacy of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and sodium fluoride (NaF) in inhibiting enamel erosion in primary teeth.
METHODS: 80 primary canine teeth were immersed for 24 h in 2% NaF, 10% SDF, or distilled water. Afterward, some of them underwent a 10-min acid challenge using either 1% or 10% citric acid while others did not. Specimens selected for negative controls were immersed in distilled water but not exposed to the acids, whereas those selected for positive controls were not only immersed in distilled water, but also exposed to the acids. Following, 3-mL samples wer

Both dental and skeletal fluorosis caused by high fluoride intake are serious public health concerns around the world. Fluorosis is particularly pronounced in developing countries where elevated concentrations of naturally occurring fluoride are present in the drinking water, which is the primary route of exposure. The World Health Organization recommended limit of fluoride in drinking water is 1.5 mg F(-) L(-1), which is also the upper limit for fluoride in drinking water for several other countries such as Canada, China, India, Australia, and the European Union. In the United States the enfo

Two 5-arylidenebarbituric acid derivatives (IH and IM) have been synthesized by the Knoevenagel condensation of barbituric acid with 4-N,N-dimethylamino benzaldehyde and studied for anion sensing activities. Both receptors sense fluoride ion with high selectivity and sensitivity and the sensing action has been demonstrated by naked eye detection, UV-visible absorption, and fluorescence spectral changes in the presence of F(-). Indeed, the F(-) sensing mechanism for receptor IH depends on F(-) ion concentration. While at higher concentrations F(-) forms strong hydrogen bonding interaction with

Increased exposure to fluorine-containing compounds leads to accumulation of fluorides in hard tissues of bones and teeth, which may result in numerous skeletal and dental disorders. This study evaluates the influence of methionine and vitamin E on fluoride concentration in bones and teeth of rats subjected to long-term exposure to sodium fluoride in drinking water. The study was conducted in 30 3-month-old female Wistar FL rats. The animals were divided into five groups, six rats per group. The control group consisted of rats receiving only distilled water as drinking water. All other groups

Fluoride toothpastes in conjunction with tooth brushing are used to clean teeth, control plaque build-up and for anti-caries benefits. Toothpastes are designed with attractive flavours and appearances to encourage regular prolonged use to maximise these benefits. The incorporation of additional ingredients into toothpaste is a convenient way to provide supplementary protection that fits into people's everyday oral care routine. Such ingredients should not compromise the primary health benefits of toothpaste nor discourage its use. o-Cymen-5-ol and zinc chloride have been incorporated into a so

Fluoride concentration in whole saliva and in separate gland secretions was determined after a single application of each of 3 different fluoride varnishes with contrasting levels of fluoride in a randomized crossover design. The study group comprised 8 healthy schoolchildren aged 10-12 years treated with A: Bifluorid 12 (6% F); B: Duraphat (2.26% F); and C: Fluor Protector (0.1% F). Unstimulated and stimulated whole saliva, as well as stimulated parotid and submandibular-sublingual saliva, were collected at baseline and 1, 6, 12, and 24h after the varnish treatments. The fluoride concentratio

The caries-preventing activity of fluorine is a surfact in the medicine. Dentists and physicists analysed with a new nuclear physical method the fluorine uptake of the tooth enamel after application of new caries-preventive agents. The fluorine profile of the first 3 microns of the enamel surface from deciduous teeth was established after three years clinical treatment with two new developed fluorine gels from the VEB Leipziger Arzneimittelwerk in comparison with Elmexgelee and a control agent. The determination of the fluorine profiles was performed using proton-induced gamma rays emission (P

The amounts of loosely-bound fluoride (F) deposited on human enamel by two topical F treatments were measured with use of a constant-composition F washing method. Enamel biopsies conducted before treatment and after the washing were used for determination of the firmly-bound F uptake. The results showed that (1) the washing system did not remove F from untreated enamel surface, (2) a four-minute application of an acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel deposited 27.2 (2.4) (mean, S.E.) micrograms of loosely-bound F per cm2 of enamel surface and 186 (111) ppm of firmly-bound F in the outer 10 m

The in vitro susceptibility of Streptococcus mutans, S. sobrinus and Lactobacillus casei to dental gels containing various combinations of amine fluoride (AmF 297), stannous fluoride (SnF2), and chlorhexidine (CHX) was studied. The combination of AmF-SnF2 with a total fluoride content of 1.2% was the most effective against mutans streptococci but not against L. casei. At notably lower total fluoride concentration (0.4%), AmF as such or combined with SnF2, was significantly less effective against mutans streptococci than CHX or CHX-AmF-SnF2 combinations. CHX-AmF combination was a slightly more
