Diversity of Food Allergy.

Food allergy is defined as an immune system-mediated adverse reaction to food components. Food allergic reactions are mostly IgE mediated and also known as immediate type hypersensitivity (type I reaction). There are several characteristic clinical types of food allergy, such as Anaphylaxis, Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (FDEIA), and Oral allergy syndrome (OAS). In addition, food allergy is also classified into two types (class 1 and class 2) based on the pathophysiological mechanism. In the class 2 food allergy, pollen allergy causes plant food allergy; therefore this type of al

Food and environmental allergies.

Immunoglobulin E-mediated allergic responses to food and environmental allergens can cause symptoms ranging from mild allergic rhinitis and rashes to gastrointestinal distress and, most seriously, anaphylaxis. The diagnosis can be difficult, as it relies on complex interplay between patient history and diagnostic tests with low specificity. Adding to the difficulty in confirming the diagnosis is an increased public interest in food intolerances, which can be inappropriately attributed to an allergic response. Treatment of allergic diseases with avoidance strategies and pharmacologic treatments

Toxicology of food dyes.

BACKGROUND: Food dyes, synthesized originally from coal tar and now petroleum, have long been controversial because of safety concerns. Many dyes have been banned because of their adverse effects on laboratory animals or inadequate testing. CONCLUSIONS: This review finds that all of the nine currently US-approved dyes raise health concerns of varying degrees. Red 3 causes cancer in animals, and there is evidence that several other dyes also are carcinogenic. Three dyes (Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6) have been found to be contaminated with benzidine or other carcinogens. At least four dyes (

Epidemiology of food allergy.

Adverse reactions to foods can occur for a variety of reasons, but a food allergy is caused by a specific immune response. Challenges to determine the prevalence of food allergy include misclassification, biased participation, lack of simple diagnostic tests, rapid evolution of disease, large numbers of potential triggers, and varied clinical phenotypes. Nonetheless, it is clear that this is a common disorder, with studies suggesting a cumulative prevalence of 3% to 6%, representing a significant impact on quality of life and costs. The inclusion of mild reactions to fruits and vegetables coul

Neurobiology of food addiction.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review recent work on disorders related to food use, including food addiction, and to highlight the similarities and differences between food and drugs of abuse. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent work on food use disorders has demonstrated that the same neurobiological pathways that are implicated in drug abuse also modulate food consumption, and that the body's regulation of food intake involves a complex set of peripheral and central signaling networks. Moreover, new research indicates that rats can become addicted to certain foods, that men and women may respond differently to

Food allergy and intolerance.

This article forms part of a series looking at the relationship between diet and good health, and the role of the dietitian in the primary health care team. This article discusses adverse reactions to food including IgE mediated food allergy and nonimmunological food reactions. Coeliac disease, a T-cell mediated reaction to gluten, will be discussed in the next article in this series.

Asthma and food allergy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Food allergy associated clinical and social burdens have increased substantially in prevalence in the past decade. Coexisting asthma is a significant problem as food reactions tend to be more severe when they involve the lung. Food allergy also increases asthma morbidity in adults and children. RECENT FINDINGS: Especially in early infancy, food allergy can be related to the development of future asthma. For diagnosis, cut-off values are very important for both specific IgE levels and skin-prick test when interpreting food allergy. For the treatment, oral immunotherapy is sh

Contact reactions to food.

Cutaneous adverse reactions to foods, spices, and food additives can occur both in occupational and nonoccupational settings in those who grow, handle, prepare, or cook food. Because spices are also utilized in cosmetics and perfumes, other exposures are encountered that can result in adverse cutaneous reactions. This article describes the reaction patterns that can occur upon contact with foods, including irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis. The ingestion of culprit foods by sensitized individuals can provoke a generalized eczematous rash, referred to as systemic conta

[A food cognition questionnaire].

BACKGROUND: Many authors evoke the role of cognition in the persistence of symptoms or in relapse. In pathology the cognitions produced by the patients are called dysfunctional or erroneous. The content of the cognitions are words or images issued from the treatment of information. In emotional disorders, the structure of thoughts named dysfunctional "schemata" involves a biased treatment of information and leads to erroneous cognitions. Several studies have attempted to elicit the most specific cognitions of different diseases. In this field, Hollon and Kendall found 36 cognitions specific to

Food allergy in children.

Food allergy is being increasingly recognised with the highest prevalence being in preschool children. Pathogenesis varies so diagnosis rests on careful history and clinical examination, appropriate use of skin prick and serum-specific IgE testing, food challenge, and supervised elimination diets. A double blind placebo controlled food challenge is the gold standard diagnostic test. Avoidance of the allergenic food is the key towards successful management. IgE mediated food allergy may present as a potentially fatal anaphylactic reaction, and management consists of the appropriate use of adren

Contact allergy to food.

Contact allergies to foods, spices, and food additives can occur to individuals in the workplace or at home. Seven different reaction types have been described. These include irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, contact urticaria, protein contact dermatitis, phototoxic contact dermatitis, photo-allergic contact dermatitis, and systemic contact dermatitis. The causes of each of these are reviewed and an approach to the diagnosis and management of contact allergy to foods, spices, and food additives is formulated.

Biochemical and biophysical properties of prions including possible inactivation methods are reviewed. Possible molecular markers of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) and mechanisms behind infectivity and correlation with clinical symptoms are discussed. The risk of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) for humans i.e. variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (cCJD) is addressed in detail. Food induced skin diseases.

Skin diseases due to an adverse reaction to food are urticaria, atopic dermatitis, oral allergy syndrome, dermatitis herpetiformis and protein induced contact dermatitis. The first three disorders will be discussed in more detail. Urticaria per se is a common skin reaction associated with various external and internal factors. Food as a causative factor is more frequently associated with acute than with chronic urticaria. The relation between food and atopic dermatitis is evident in young children with atopic dermatitis. The course of atopic dermatitis in adults is hardly influenced by food. T

Food-associated gastrointestinal disease.

The ingestion of food is frequently associated with specific adverse gastrointestinal symptoms, including emesis, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and gastrointestinal bleeding. This brief review discusses a variety of food-induced gastrointestinal diseases and will highlight the recent information pertaining to the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic approach, and treatment of these disorders. Reactions resulting from immediate hypersensitivity and cell-mediated processes will be reviewed in detail, as well as other proposed pathophysiologic mechanisms. The clinical presentation a

Malabsorption of food cobalamin.

Food-cobalamin malabsorption is marked by the inability to release cobalamin from food, which therefore cannot be taken up by intrinsic factor for absorption. The defect is not detectable by classical clinical tests like the Schilling test which are all based on the absorption of free, crystalline cobalamin. Tests of food-cobalamin absorption have been devised, the most popular ones using cobalamin bound to eggs or to chicken serum. The disparity between the abnormal results of these tests and the normal results with the Schilling test defines the disorder of food-cobalamin malabsorption. Rele
