Cystic lesions of the kidney represent a heterogeneous group of conditions ranging from non-neoplastic processes to benign and malignant neoplasms. With the widespread use of cross-sectional imaging, these lesions are detected with increasing frequency, often incidentally during radiologic evaluation. The Bosniak classification system remains the primary radiologic framework for estimating malignancy risk and guiding management decisions for cystic renal masses. However, imaging findings alone are frequently insufficient for definitive diagnosis, and accurate classification often requires inte

To clarify the significance of bone marrow fibrosis and amyloid deposition in plasma cell neoplasm, a retrospective cross-sectional study for a period of 3 years was conducted. Patients who underwent bone marrow aspiration and biopsy with suspicion of plasma cell neoplasms were included in the study. The bone marrow findings were correlated with clinical profile of the patient along with biochemical parameters, cytogenetics, Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) wherever available. A total of 273 bone marrow aspirates and biopsies of patients with suspected plasma cell neoplasms were analyz

Surgery for retroperitoneal neoplasms with a tumor thrombus extension into the right atrium is challenging. This study reviewed four surgical cases of advanced stage malignant neoplasms with the tumor thrombus extending into the right atrium. The malignant neoplasms involved the kidney in two patients, and the liver and adrenal gland in one each. The tumor thrombus was removed through a longitudinal cavotomy and right atriotomy in all cases. The inferior vena cava reconstruction was performed by directly closing it in one patient and by pericardial patch suturing in another. Cardiopulmonary by

Cytokeratin 7 (CK 7) and cytokeratin 20 (CK 20) are low molecular weight cytokeratins. Their anatomic distribution is generally restricted to epithelia and their neoplasms. We surveyed 435 epithelial neoplasms from various organ systems by immunohistochemistry using CK 7 and CK 20 monoclonal antibodies. Expression of CK 7 was seen in the majority of cases of carcinoma, with the exception of those carcinomas arising from the colon, prostate, kidney, and thymus; carcinoid tumors of the lung and gastrointestinal tract origin; and Merkel cell tumor of the skin. The majority of cases of squamous ce

Fetal tumors are a diverse group of neoplasms, which are unique in their histologic characteristics, anatomic distribution, and pathophysiology. The biologic behavior of tumors in the fetus may differ dramatically compared with that of the same tumor detected later in life. Teratomas are the dominant histologic type and constitute the majority of both extracranial and intracranial neoplasms. Although often histologically mature, they may prove lethal because of their location and metabolic demands on the fetus. Large solid tumors may lead to cardiovascular compromise and hydrops fetalis. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: 219 heart transplant recipients with survival over 3 months were retro- and prospectively analysed for the incidence of primary neoplasms. Patients received immunosuppressive drugs (cyclosporine A, azathioprine, steroids) with a 4-5 days induction course of Rabbit Anti-Thymocyte Immunoglobulin (RATG) or monoclonal antibodies induction /OKT3/ in some cases. Anti-rejection treatment consisted of pulse doses of methyloprednisolon or RATG.
RESULTS: 9 cases of malignancy (4.1%) with one case of pre-malignant liver condition (dysplasia gigantocellulare, 0.45%) were found (8M

A 7-month-old male domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was presented for evaluation of unilateral testicular enlargement. Microscopic examination of the left testicle revealed a neoplasm with differentiation along multiple cell lines (ectoderm, endoderm, mesoderm) including respiratory epithelium, bone and haired skin. A poorly differentiated epithelial component was dispersed throughout the neoplasm with invasion of testicular lymphatics. The animal developed progressive dysuria and was euthanized. At necropsy, metastasis of the poorly differentiated epithelial component was present in th

Two cases are reported of the development of mucoid adenocarcinoma of the colon in young patients, nineteen and thirty-four years after ureterocolic anastomosis for benign conditions. One patient showed implantation of the colonic neoplasm on the mucosa of an upper calyx in the obstructed kidney. Patients who have undergone ureterocolic anastomosis have a greatly increased risk of the development of large-bowel neoplasms. When suspected, radiologic examination of the colon using a water-soluble contrast material, together with rectosigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy, is essential. Because of the ser

A 56-year-old Japanese man consulted a urologist because of urethral bleeding. He had been undergoing hemodialysis for the past 15 years due to polycystic kidney disease. Computed tomography revealed an irregular cyst wall in the left kidney. Since a neoplasm could not be ruled out, we removed the left kidney, by laparoscopic radical nephrectomy after obtaining the patient's consent. Histopathologic diagnosis was renal cell carcinoma. Fourteen months after the operation, urethral bleeding recurred. Further examination of the bladder and the urethra revealed no significant abnormalities. The pa

Tumors of the renal pelvis are rare neoplasms: their yearly incidence is 1.4 cases per 100,000 men and 0.6 cases per 100,000 women. The annual incidence of renal tuberculosis is 13 cases per 100,000 persons. The likelihood of both diseases occurring in the same kidney is extremely remote. We report on a case of ureter transitional cell carcinoma developed in a patient with tuberculosis stenosis of the same ureter, small retracted bladder and destruction of the opposite kidney. Total uterectomy, augmentation ileocaecocystoplasty and contralateral nephrectomy were performed. Literature is briefl

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare spindle cell neoplasm that mostly originates from the pleura, and accounts for only 2% of all soft tissue tumors. Moreover, the cases of SFT of the kidney are rarely reported. Here, we report a typical case of kidney SFT, which was consistent with other reported cases. This case further expands on existing diagnostic methods of SFT and explains the importance of STAT6 mutations in SFT.
CASE SUMMARY: We report a typical case of SFT of the kidney. A 34-year-old woman presented to the urinary surgery department after physical examinations were s

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MC) is a rare malignant cartilaginous forming tumor. MC of the kidney is extremely rare, with only seven cases reported in the literature. The present study described the case of a 17-year-old male, who presented with sudden severe pain in the right flank and a high fever. Imaging studies demonstrated a large soft heterogeneous mass (7.8×9.5×15 cm) located between the liver and right kidney with no clear demarcation, and a well-demarcated mass (1.3×2.4 cm) with patchy dense calcification occupying the left renal pelvis. Following the diagnosis of a Wilms' tumor, the

OBJECTIVE: To report a new case with elevation of Ca 125 and hydronephrotic kidney without neoplastic disease, having special reference to clinical aspects.
METHOD: The clinical history, anatomopathological and immunohistochemical findings are described. We performed a bibliographic review. We report the case of a 27 year-old female with the diagnosis of giant hydronephrosis and Ca125 elevation (313 u/ml hydronephrotic kidney urine and 112.3 u/ml serum).
RESULT: She underwent a radical nephrectomy and Ca125 levels decreased. After 9 years the patient did not have any neoplastic disease and C

BACKGROUND: Currently, the standard treatment for renal pelvis carcinoma is radical nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff excision. To describe the feasibility of retroperitoneal laparoscopic partial nephrectomy with segmental renal artery clamping for cancer of renal pelvis, we report this special case for the first time.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old woman received this operation. Preoperative ureteroscopy revealed a papillary neoplasm with a pedicle in the upper calyx of the left kidney. After entering the retroperitoneal space and dissociating the renal artery and renal vein, the target

Cancer patients have an incidence of about 60% kidney disease development and are at elevated risk of acute renal damage. Kidney disease in these patients is frequently associated with nephrotoxicity from the ongoing oncological treatment. New anticancer therapeutic strategies, such as targeted therapies and immunotherapies, offer substantial benefits in the treatment of many neoplasms. However, their use is associated with significant nephrotoxicity, which qualitatively differs from that seen with traditional cytotoxic chemotherapy, while the underlying mechanisms are complex and still to be

A total of 12 patients with malignant localized renal or ureteral neoplasms underwent multi-slice computed tomography. Imaging data were sent to the dedicated workstation to create volume rendering and virtual laparoscopic images of the kidney which was displaced ventrally with retroperitoneal balloon. These findings were compared with video images obtained during retroperitoneal laparoscopic nephrectomy. The kidney displacement simulator depicted all renal arteries (100% sensitivity) and 13 of 14 renal veins (93% sensitivity). Hilar anatomy, including the tumor, major vessels and their relati

Fibrillary glomerulonephritis (FGN) is a rare glomerular disease characterized by the deposition of fibrils within the mesangium and glomerular basement membrane. Most cases are idiopathic, but it can be linked to autoimmune diseases, neoplasms, and infections. There is limited evidence on the best treatment approach, and many patients progress to end-stage kidney disease. The authors present a case of FGN in a patient with Sjögren's syndrome (SS) and primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), highlighting a successful clinical outcome.

Renal tumors are exceedingly rare in Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 1 (MEN1), a pleyotropic hereditary cancer disorder affecting the endocrine system. Herein we report a unique case of renal sarcomatoid carcinoma with concomitant ipsilateral non-secreting adrenal adenoma occurring in a young male MEN1 patient, previously operated for hyperparathyroidism and multiple pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms. Molecular analysis in the MEN1 locus at 11q13 showed loss of heterozygosity in the adrenal lesion, while kidney cancer was unrelated to MEN1 syndrome.

Mixed epithelial and stromal tumors (MESTs) of the kidney are rare renal neoplasms characterized by mixed cystic and solid components. These tumors are typically present in middle-aged women as a flank mass, or as a cause of flank pain or hematuria. We outline the case of an older male who presented with an enlarging abdominal mass causing symptoms that suggested a partial small bowel obstruction. Management of the patient and a brief review are discussed.
