INTRODUCTION: Since the escalation of the armed conflict in Ukraine in 2022, the number of Ukrainian citizens in Poland has increased considerably, especially among women. The study aimed to explore the opinions of migrant women from Ukraine regarding the intrapartum and midwifery care they received in Poland, as well as to analyse demographic, migration-related, clinical, and psychosocial variables associated with these aspects of care.
METHODS: The study was conducted using the diagnostic survey method between December 2024 and February 2025 among 481 migrant women from Ukraine who gave bir

BACKGROUND: World Health Organization (WHO) projections point to an increasing global demand for nurses and midwives, leading to shortages in many countries, particularly in less developed regions. Ireland, the context for this study, currently relies heavily on foreign educated nurses and midwives to meet its demand, with Government policy moving towards a domestic recruitment model. This paper estimates the recruitment requirement and associated nursing and midwifery student intake over time under different reform scenarios. It also highlights policy considerations for countries, like Irelan

BACKGROUND: Compared to undergoing prenatal care with a physician, care with a midwife reduces the risk of medical interventions and complications during labor and delivery among low-risk pregnant individuals. However, many analyses that assess the relationship between midwifery-led care and birth outcomes condition on live births, potentially inducing a type of collider bias.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to analyse the change in prevalence of caesarean deliveries, primary and secondary postpartum haemorrhage, obstetric trauma, and maternal infection under hypothetical scenarios where midwife

PROBLEM: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a complication of pregnancy which may exclude women from midwife-led models of care.
BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of research evaluating the safety and feasibility of continuity of midwifery care (CoMC) for women with GDM.
AIM: To investigate the impact of CoMC on maternal and neonatal outcomes, for otherwise low-risk women with GDM.
METHODS: This exploratory cross-sectional study observed maternal and neonatal outcomes including onset of labour, augmentation, labour analgesia, mode of birth, perineal trauma, gestation at birth, shoulder dys

OBJECTIVE: Use a pragmatic mixed methods approach to provide a rich understanding of the perceptions of Problematic Substance Use (PSU) and the influences of PSU on the mental and physical health of midwives registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
DESIGN: A confidential and anonymous self-administered online survey was employed to encourage wider participation.
SETTING: United Kingdom PARTICIPANTS: Midwives (n=623) registered with the NMC MEASUREMENTS: Open text responses were invited throughout the survey. Along with the collection of brief demographic data, PSU was also me

BACKGROUND: Women have consistently reported lower satisfaction with postnatal care compared with antenatal and labour care. The aim of this research was to examine whether women's experience of inpatient postnatal care in England is associated with variation in midwifery staffing levels.
METHODS: Analysis of data from the National Maternity Survey in 2018 including 17,611 women from 129 organisations. This was linked to hospital midwifery staffing numbers from the National Health Service (NHS) Workforce Statistics and the number of births from Hospital Episode Statistics. A two-level logisti

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between the duration of the latent phase of labor and subsequent processes and outcomes.
METHODS: Secondary analysis of prospectively collected data among 1,189 women with low-risk pregnancies and spontaneous labor.
RESULTS: Longer latent phase duration was associated with labor dystocia (eg, nulliparous ≥ mean [compared with < mean] aOR 3.95 [2.70-5.79]; multiparous ≥ mean [compared with < mean] aOR 5.45 [3.43-8.65]), interventions to ameliorate dystocia, and epidurals to cope or rest (eg, oxytocin augmentation: nulliparous > 80th% [compared

BACKGROUND: For healthy women entering birth after uneventful pregnancy, midwife-led models of care have the potential to reduce interventions and increase the vaginal birth rate. In Germany, 98.4% of women are giving birth in consultant-led obstetric units. Alongside midwifery units (AMU) have been established in 2003. We compared the outcome of women registered for planned birth in the AMU at our hospital with a matched group of low-risk women who gave birth in standard obstetric care during the same period of time.
METHODS: We used a retrospective cohort study design. The study group consi

BACKGROUND: Historically nursing and midwifery students have reported difficulty understanding the concept-based science underpinning the interactions between drugs and their targets. This knowledge is crucial for the administration and monitoring of the therapeutic and adverse effects of medications. Immersive three-dimensional technology is reported to enhance understanding of complex scientific concepts but the physical effects of motion sickness may limit its use.
OBJECTIVES: This project compared the effectiveness of three-dimensional immersive visualisation technology with two-dimension

BACKGROUND: High rates of preterm births remain a UK public health concern. Preterm birth is a major determinant of adverse infant and longer-term outcomes, including survival, quality of life, psychosocial effects on the family and health care costs. We aim to test whether a model of care combining continuity of midwife care with rapid referral to a specialist obstetric clinic throughout pregnancy, intrapartum and the postpartum period is feasible and improves experience and outcomes for women at increased risk of preterm birth.
METHODS: This pilot, hybrid, type 2 randomised controlled imple

Perinatal drug and alcohol use is associated with serious medical and psychiatric morbidity for pregnant and postpartum women and their newborns. Participation in prenatal care has been shown to improve outcomes, even in the absence of treatment for substance use disorders. Unfortunately, women with substance use disorders often do not receive adequate prenatal care. Barriers to accessing care for pregnant women with substance use disorders include medical and psychiatric comorbidities, transportation, caring for existing children, housing and food insecurity, and overall lack of resources. BACKGROUND: Social inequity in perinatal and maternal health is a well-documented health problem even in countries with a high level of social equality. We aimed to study whether the effect of birthplace on perinatal and maternal morbidity, birth interventions and use of pain relief among low risk women intending to give birth in two freestanding midwifery units (FMU) versus two obstetric units in Denmark differed by level of social disadvantage.
METHODS: The study was designed as a cohort study with a matched control group. It included 839 low-risk women intending to give birth in an FMU, wh

Nursing and midwifery students constitute a subgroup of health care providers exposed to occupational risk of HIV infection became of direct contact with blood and body fluids during clinical practice. The occupational risk faced by these students is of serious concern, given their limited experience and proficiency in nursing care skills. This study was carried out to provide important baseline data about knowledge, perception and practice with regards to occupational risks of HIV/AIDS among 359 nursing and 120 midwifery students (N = 479) in Ibadan, Nigeria. The study utilized both qualitati

The aim of the present study was to examine the use of maternal weight measurements during antenatal care throughout the United Kingdom. A postal questionnaire and follow-up letter were sent to 1500 midwives throughout the United Kingdom, selected at random from the UKCC register. The postal survey achieved a response rate of 44.8% (672/1500 questionnaires), and obtained responses from at least 10 midwives in all but the lowest grade. Respondents were representative of midwives practising throughout the country, in terms of their gender, working hours and grade, although there were fewer midwi

AIM: To examine:(1) study-related demands faced by first-year midwifery students; and (2) support provided to help them cope with demands.
BACKGROUND: The recent national transition from vocational training into tertiary midwifery education in Germany resulted in a new teaching environment and adjusted clinical placement settings. Capacity building at tertiary level enabled innovative services to foster supportive learning environments for midwifery students, including processes for onboarding. However, little is known about students' perceived challenges during this time.
DESIGN: Convergent

Shenzhen, a leading city in China's Elimination of Mother-to-Child Transmission (EMTCT) Programme, implemented effective practices to reduce HIV-related stigma and officially launched a comprehensive work plan in 2021. This study assessed the trend of HIV-related stigma in Shenzhen's midwifery hospitals by comparing two surveys of healthcare providers (HCPs) conducted in 2020 and 2023. The study included 2705 HCPs and used an adapted 15-item HIV-related stigma scale. The results showed a significant decrease in stigma, with the mean stigma score dropping from 2.01 in 2020 to 1.89 in 2023. Whil

Past Australian research has identified gaps in midwives' knowledge, confidence and skills to incorporate oral health promotion within routine antenatal care. The Midwifery Initiated Oral Health (MIOH) evidence-based online training program is designed to provide midwives with practical skills required to promote oral health. The long-term effectiveness of the MIOH program on midwives' oral health knowledge and confidence to incorporate oral health promotion into practice was assessed. A pre-post-test design was used with a convenience sample of midwives (pre vs. post and post versus long-term

OBJECTIVES: preterm birth represents a significant personal, clinical, organisational and financial burden. Strategies to reduce the preterm birth rate have had limited success. Limited evidence indicates that certain antenatal care models may offer some protection, although the causal mechanism is not understood. We sought to compare preterm birth rates for mixed-risk pregnant women accessing antenatal care organised at a freestanding midwifery unit (FMU) and mixed-risk pregnant women attending an obstetric unit (OU) with related community-based antenatal care.

PRINCIPLES: The prevalence of early postpartum mental health conditions is high. Midwives and other health professionals visiting women at home may identify mothers at risk. This seems crucial given decreasing trends of length of hospital stay after childbirth. This study aimed to identify predictors of maternal mental distress in a midwifery home care setting.
METHODS: Using the statistical database of independent midwives' services in Switzerland in 2007, we conducted a matched nested case-control study. Out of a source population of 34,295 mothers with midwifery home care in the first ten
