Neck pain and low back pain in relation to functional disability in different sport activities.

This population-based, cross-sectional study aimed to determine the frequency of neck pain, low back pain (LBP) and also the LBP related functional disability in five sport categories including football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, and other sports in one of the Iranian sport Olympiads. The prevalence of neck pain and LBP in different time points was evaluated with the use of an interview questionnaire. A visual analogue scale was used to evaluate the athlete's current pain. Furthermore, the functional disability related to LBP was assessed by the Athletes Disability Index Questionnaire

Altered pain sensitivity and axioscapular muscle activity in neck pain patients compared with healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have indicated that neck pain patients feel increased symptoms following upper limb activities, and altered axioscapular muscle function has been proposed as a contributing factor. METHODS: Pain sensitivity and muscle activity, during arm movements, were assessed in neck pain patients and controls. Patients with ongoing insidious-onset neck pain (IONP, N = 16) and whiplash-associated disorders (WAD, N = 9) were included along with sex- and age-matched controls (N = 25). Six series of repeated arm abductions were performed during electromyographic (EMG) recordings

Common Mechanisms in Migraine, Migraine-Related Neck Pain, and Low Back Pain: Implications for Treatment.

AIM: Chronic pain conditions, such as migraine, migraine-related neck pain (NP), and low back pain (LBP), are central pain processing disorders that frequently coexist. This narrative review aims to synthesize central sensitization (CS), pain spread and pharmacological and rehabilitation-based interventions for these three conditions and their common underlying mechanisms. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed and Web of Science to identify clinical and neurophysiological studies investigating CS, nociceptive processing, pharmacological and non-pharmacological app

Bilateral mechanical-pain sensitivity over the trigeminal region in patients with chronic mechanical neck pain.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to investigate bilateral pressure-pain sensitivity over the trigeminal region, the cervical spine, and the tibialis anterior muscle in patients with mechanical chronic neck pain. Twenty-three patients with neck pain (56% women), aged 20 to 37 years old, and 23 matched controls (aged 20 to 38 years) were included. Pressure pain thresholds (PPTs) were bilaterally assessed over masseter, temporalis, and upper trapezius muscles, the C5-C6 zygapophyseal joint, and the tibialis anterior muscle in a blinded design. The results showed that PPT levels were signific

Peripheral neuron circuitry mediating pain in head and neck cancer.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pain is a major source of morbidity in head and neck cancer (HNC), yet its neural mechanisms remain incompletely defined. This review examines how malignant cells, the tumor microenvironment, and cancer treatment remodel peripheral sensory and autonomic circuits, and how neural activity reciprocally influences tumor biology, with particular attention to findings published since 2023. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies show that HNC selectively reorganizes tumor-associated nerves rather than merely injuring a pre-existing neural scaffold. Sensory-neuron transcriptional response

Carotidynia-A Rare Cause of Anterior Neck Pain: Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Carotidynia is a rare, often under-diagnosed condition characterized by idiopathic inflammation around the carotid artery, presenting with unilateral neck pain that typically resolves within two weeks. CASE REPORT: A 32-year-old male presented with intermittent right anterior neck pain for two years, with no other associated symptoms. Computed tomography revealed carotid perivascular inflammation, consistent with carotidynia. CONCLUSION: Although self-limited, carotidynia should be considered in patients with unexplained neck pain, as its recognition is crucial to differentiate

Acute Myocarditis Presenting as Neck Pain With Severe Systemic Inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Acute myocarditis classically presents with chest pain, dyspnea, and arrhythmias; however, atypical and extracardiac presentations may delay recognition. We describe an unusual presentation characterized by unilateral neck pain, dysphagia, profound systemic inflammation, and reversible cardiogenic shock. CASE SUMMARY: A 35-year-old previously healthy woman initially presented with unilateral neck pain, dysphagia, and constitutional symptoms without chest pain or dyspnea. She developed hypotension requiring vasopressors, marked leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia, transaminitis, elevate

Vitamin B12 deficiency presenting as neck pain and cervical radiculopathy.

Vitamin B12 is required for the formation of haematopoietic cells and the synthesis of myelin. Deficiency typically presents with fatigue and megaloblastic anaemia. Prolonged deficiency can cause neurological symptoms such as paresthesia, which can progress to subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord. We describe an unusual presentation of B12 deficiency in a young man who was initially diagnosed and treated for cervical radiculopathy. This case highlights the challenges of diagnosing B12 deficiency in patients with neurologic but without haematologic, abnormalities. While the current

Subgrouping individuals with migraine associated neck pain for targeted management.

INTRODUCTION: Neck pain is one of the most common and burdensome symptoms associated with migraine. Many individuals with migraine and neck pain seek neck treatment, but evidence for such treatment is limited. Most studies have treated this population as a homogenous group, providing uniform cervical interventions that have yet to show clinically important effects. However, different neurophysiological and musculoskeletal mechanisms can underlie neck pain in migraine. Targeting treatment to specific underlying mechanisms may therefore be the key to improving treatment outcomes. Our research ch

Tactile Precision Remains Intact When Acute Neck Pain Is Induced.

A growing body of evidence suggests that chronic pain is associated with perceptual changes, such as impaired tactile acuity and laterality judgements. A recent study on low back pain showed that tactile acuity was decreased immediately after acute pain induction. Biologically, acute pain should lead to enhanced rather than disruptive changes in tactile acuity to meaningfully respond to potentially damaging nociceptive stimuli. In this double-blinded experiment, 30 healthy volunteers attended 3 experimental sessions (injection, sham injection, and control condition) separated by 1 week each, t

ACR Appropriateness Criteria® Cervical Neck Pain or Cervical Radiculopathy.

Nontraumatic neck pain is a leading cause of disability, with nearly 50% of individuals experiencing ongoing or recurrent symptoms. Radiographs are appropriate as initial imaging for cervical or neck pain in the absence of "red flag" symptoms or if there are unchanging chronic symptoms; however, spondylotic changes are commonly identified and may result in both false-positive and false-negative findings. Noncontrast CT can be complementary to radiographs for evaluation of new or changing symptoms in the setting of prior cervical spine surgery or in the assessment of extent of ossification in t

Fear avoidance and illness beliefs in post-traumatic neck pain.

STUDY DESIGN: A descriptive overview of the relevant literature and the introduction of a new psychological model. OBJECTIVE: The fear-avoidance (FA) model and the potential importance of illness beliefs in post-traumatic neck pain are discussed. The causal beliefs-anxiety model is introduced as an adaptation of the FA model, emphasizing the critical role of illness beliefs. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although the FA model is most thoroughly used to investigate chronic low back pain, it seems also highly relevant as a starting point for other chronic pain conditions like whiplash.
