AIM: To review the evidence on nurses' health systematically.
BACKGROUND: Nurses are one of the most important resources of a health system. They are subjected to biological, socio-economic, cultural and health system factors that determine their health. Although mental and physical health problems seem to prevail among nurses, literature is often contradictory. The literature on health styles, health behaviours and self perceived health of nurses is also unclear.
DESIGN: Systematic review of experimental and observational studies on nurses' health.
METHODS: Forty-three databases searched.

AIM: This study evaluates the effectiveness of immersive virtual reality (VR) in nursing education, with a focus on its impact on knowledge acquisition, skill development, and problem-solving abilities among nursing students and nursing staff. In addition, it examines the effects of different levels of VR immersion across various learner populations, as well as potential side effects.
BACKGROUND: Traditional nursing education often lacks realistic clinical settings, leading to "reality shock" during clinical practice. VR provides a safe environment for learners to simulate clinical scenarios

INTRODUCTION: The 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes were among the most catastrophic disasters in Türkiye’s history, affecting over 13 million people and causing massive casualties and infrastructure devastation. Nurses play a critical role in all phases of disaster management, yet no standardized, nurse-specific framework exists to guide their practice. This study aims to explore the challenges nurses encounter in earthquake management and to develop a comprehensive, nurse-specific earthquake management model based on their field experiences. METHODS: This qualitative study employed semi-structu

PURPOSE: Suicide is a major issue around the world. Cancer is now well known as a higher risk of suicide. Guidelines recommend that patients need to be screened for suicidal ideation to be referred early to appropriate supportive care. Nurses are primary professional resources. Despite this role in many international studies, oncology nurses felt unable, lacked skills, and feared to deal with suicidal patients. We lack data concerning the care practices of French nurses. This study aims to describe the barriers and facilitators to screen suicidal risk in adult cancer patients by nurses working

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the influence of a newly implemented acuity and scheduling system on nurses' perception of staffing adequacy and scheduling satisfaction.
BACKGROUND: Research shows an association between nurse staffing and scheduling and job satisfaction, but there is limited research on how staffing and scheduling affect this relationship.
METHODS: A convenience sample of nurses completed surveys measuring satisfaction with staffing and scheduling before and after implementation of a new scheduling and acuity system in the hospital setting. Comparison of pre-post survey responses was an

AIM: To describe the self-evaluated level of competence of clinical nursing staff and supervisors' evaluations of staff competence in non-specialist palliative care settings.
METHODS: A web-based questionnaire provided a cross-sectional nationwide sample of answers.
FINDINGS: A total of 587 answers were analysed. Clinical nurses rated their competence lowest in the themes of communication and advance care planning (ACP). ACP was among the lowest scoring themes for supervisors' evaluat

Sepsis and septic shock are two of the most prevalent disease states in today's medical intensive care units. Sepsis is a multi-system inflammatory response to infection that affects multiple organ systems, with the cardiovascular system being one of the most profoundly affected. Inflammatory mediators cause dilatation of the venous system, local tissue perfusion defects cause vasoconstriction of arterioles, and catecholamines cause increases in heart rate. Thus, nurses play a crucial role in assessing these clinical manifestations in the critically ill patient as noted through blood pressure,

Suzetrigine (JOURNAVX) is a novel oral medication approved in January 2025 for the treatment of moderate-to-severe acute pain in adults. It works by selectively inhibiting NaV1.8 voltage-gated sodium channels, which play a key role in pain transmission through peripheral sensory neurons. This targeted mechanism offers potential advantages over current pain management options. Clinical trials have demonstrated efficacy in reducing pain intensity following surgical procedures, making it a promising alternative to opioids. For nurses, suzetrigine represents an important addition to multimodal pai

Burnout, a psychological syndrome caused by prolonged exposure to chronic workplace stressors, is a prevalent issue in nursing, characterised by emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and a diminished sense of accomplishment. This article explores the widespread impact of burnout in nursing, identifying its key indicators and consequences for both nurses and patient care. Furthermore, it evaluates evidence-based management strategies, including organisational interventions, resilience training, and peer support programmes, aimed at mitigating burnout and improving outcomes.

In a culture of safety and risk management that seeks to prevent serious adverse events in healthcare environments, we rarely consider what the caregivers involved in these events experience. Studies of nurses show that they experience a range of feelings and sometimes symptoms similar to those found in post-traumatic shock. This text looks back at the experience of nurses as moral suffering, focusing on the offence of a healthcare system and the betrayal of a promise at the heart of the caring relationship.

IMPORTANCE: Supporting healthy aging is a US public health priority, and gratitude is a potentially modifiable psychological factor that may enhance health and well-being in older adults. However, the association between gratitude and mortality has not been studied.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of gratitude with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in later life.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based prospective cohort study used data from self-reported questionnaires and medical records of 49 275 US older female registered nurses who participated in the Nurses'

Nurses working in outreach capacities frequently encounter disaffiliated or 'hard to reach' populations, such as those experiencing homelessness, those who use substances, and those with mental health concerns. Despite best efforts, nurses regularly fail to find meaningful engagement with these populations. Mobilizing the work of Deleuze and Guattari, this paper will critically examine conventional outreach nursing practices as rooted in the royal science of psychiatry, which many 'survivors' of psychiatric interventions reject. The field of Mad Studies offers an understanding of patient resis

The chick embryo has prevailed as one of the major models to study developmental biology, cell biology and regeneration. From all the anatomical features of the chick embryo, the eye is one of the most studied. In the chick embryo, the eye develops between 26 and 33 h after incubation (Stages 8-9, Hamburger and Hamilton, 1951). It originates from the posterior region of the forebrain, called the diencephalon. However, the vertebrate eye includes tissues from different origins including surface ectoderm (lens and cornea), anterior neural plate (retina, iris, ciliary body and retinal pigmented e

BACKGROUND: The opioid epidemic is a major health challenge in the United States.
PURPOSE: Members from the American Academy of Nursing joined to write a consensus paper about nurses' role in the opioid epidemic.
METHODS: The panel reviewed the history of the opioid epidemic and policies to care for patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) and how registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice nurses (APRNs) could increase care for people with OUD.
DISCUSSION: Recommendations are presented to advance policies that empower RNs and APRNs to abate the opioid epidemic.
CONCLUSION: Recommendation
