Protein-losing enteropathy: first manifestation of sclerosing mesenteritis.

OBJECTIVE: To report the case of an unusual form of protein-losing enteropathy. PATIENT: A 54-year-old patient with hypoechoic tumours resembling lipomas in the mesentery. INTERVENTIONS: Following examination by ultrasound and computed tomography, the well-known intestinal and extra-intestinal forms of protein-losing enteropathy were excluded and a diagnostic laparotomy was performed. The whole mesentery was infiltrated by a large unresectable tumour. Histological examination showed that it was a sclerosing mesenteritis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Steroid therapy dramatically improved the prote

[Spontaneous regression of sclerosing mesenteritis presenting as a huge mass].

Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare benign disease originated from the mesenteries. It can be related to autoimmune disease, vasculitis, ischemia, infection, trauma and operation, but most of cases are idiopathic. The overall prognosis of sclerosing mesenteritis is usually good with benign, course. However, no consensus of treatment has yet been established. We report a case of spontaneous partial regression of sclerosing mesenteritis presented as a huge mass and diagnosed by finding of contrast enhanced abdominal computed tomography and percutaneous ultrasonography guided needle biopsy.

Mesenteric lipodystrophy with fever of unknown origin and mesenteric calcifications.

Mesenteric lipodystrophy (ML) is a rare condition characterized by a nonspecific inflammatory process that involves the root of the mesentery in a lipoma-like lesion. Presenting features of ML include abdominal pain, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. This case illustrates that ML should be included in the differential diagnosis of patients with fever of unknown origin and mesenteric calcifications.

Crystal-storing histiocytosis and immunocytoma associated with multifocal fibrosclerosis.

AIMS: Crystal-storing histiocytosis is a rare disorder described in patients with lymphoproliferative diseases, mainly in cases of multiple myeloma but also in lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma (immunocytoma). Most cases involve one single organ which, in the majority, is related directly to the presence of tumour. We describe a 44-year-old man with a clinical picture of multifocal fibrosclerosis (with mesenteric panniculitis, peritoneal, mediastinal and orbital fibrosis) in which the autopsy showed a systemic infiltrate of crystal-storing histiocytes and functional alteration of the organs involved,

Acute Recurrent Exacerbations of Mesenteric Panniculitis With Immunosuppressive Therapy: A Case Report and a Brief Review.

Mesenteric panniculitis (MP) is a rare, benign, and idiopathic disorder characterized by chronic inflammation of the mesenteric adipose tissue of the small intestine. The exact etiology of MP is unknown and its associations with underlying malignancies continues to be poorly understood. In this case report, we describe a rare case of acute exacerbations of MP in a middle-age female with a known past medical history of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in remission and small bowel resection for a localized carcinoid tumor. The patient was diagnosed with MP 4 years ago and started on tamoxifen therapy with

Mesenteric panniculitis: still an ambiguous condition.

PURPOSE: To study the possible relationship between mesenteric panniculitis (MP) visible on computed tomography (CT) and the presence of an underlying neoplastic disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 158 patients with CT examinations that revealed the presence of MP was performed. CT images were analyzed by two different radiologists using morphological criteria validated in the radiological literature. The presence, frequency and type of neoplastic lesions associated with MP were assessed. RESULTS: MP was asymptomatic in 96/158 patients (61%). Fat halo sign and pseudoca

Mesenteric panniculitis.

A 53-year-old black woman presented with a 3-day history of abdominal pain. Ultrasound of the abdomen showed a gall bladder packed with small stones. She gave a history of abdominal surgery for a gynaecological condition. She had a cholecystectomy done, but her symptoms continued after cholecystectomy. She then had anendoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatogram (ERCP) and sphincterotomy done, again her symptoms remained the same. A CT scan of the abdomen was done, and mesenteric panniculitis was suspected. A laparoscopic biopsy of the mesentery was performed, and it confirmed mesenteric pannic
