Model based investigation of retinal vessel tortuosity as a function of blood pressure: preliminary results.

Tortuosity is one of parameters which describe a state of the eye fundus blood vessels. Tortuosity can be estimated from the detected vessels in optical fundus images. The increase in vessel tortuosity was observed in eyes of patients with advanced background diabetic retinopathy, papilloedema, even in some completely healthy eyes (in this case tortuosity does not change in time). Though many methods to estimate eye vessel tortuosity exist, dependencies between tortuosity and parameters of cardiovascular system are not fully explored. In this paper we studied whether different tortuosity estim

[Intravitreous hemorrhage caused by retinal tear with a bridge vessel. Discussion on management of 4 cases].

The authors report 4 cases of recurrent vitreous hemorrhage related to retinal breaks without detachment, bridged by a retinal vessel. Clinical and evolutive features of this type of breaks are emphasized according to a review of available literature. Fluoroscopic evaluation of vascular permeability appears as a promising prognostic tool. Management should be directed to the prevention of both retinal detachment and vitreous hemorrhage recurrence. Cryoapplication and scleral buckling is far more effective than photocoagulation.

[Recurring vitreous body hemorrhages due to a retinal vessel drawn into the vitreous body cavity].

Six cases of recurrent vitreous hemorrhage are described. The hemorrhage was due to a retinal vessel rupture or injury caused by vitreous traction. The traction was exerted by the detached vitreous and the vessel drawn into its cavity without the simultaneous occurrence of a tear in the retinal area corresponding to the point of traction. The avulsed vessel was usually a small vein in the upper temporal fundus quadrant. The vessel either projected as a hooklet into the vitreous cavity or its peripheral end was found to be floating freely within the cavity after having moved away from the retin

Defective Myogenic Response of Retinal Vessels Is Associated With Accelerated Onset of Retinopathy in Type 1 Diabetic Individuals.

PURPOSE: We seek to identify pathogenic mechanisms for diabetic retinopathy that can become therapeutic targets beyond hyperglycemia and hypertension. We investigated if a defective myogenic response of retinal arteries to increased perfusion pressure, which exposes capillaries to increased pressure and flow, is associated with the onset of clinical retinopathy. METHODS: We examined prospectively the incidence of retinopathy in type 1 diabetic individuals tested 4 years earlier for the retinal arterial myogenic response, and in a cross-sectional study the prevalence of defective myogenic resp

Relations Between Pulsatility in the Optic Nerve Head or Peripapillary Retinal Vessels and the Rate of Progression in Glaucoma.

PURPOSE: Glaucomatous pathophysiology may impair retinal vasodilation, leading to increased upstream pulsatility. We sought to quantify pulsatility at multiple locations, concurrently, and identify changes that correlate with the rate of disease progression. METHODS: One hundred eighty-one eyes of 139 participants were tested twice annually for six or more visits. Vessels within the optic nerve head (ONH) and peripapillary region were identified and classified as arteries versus veins using deep learning models applied to optical coherence tomography angiography scans. Vessels were then coloc

Developing a Novel Methodology by Integrating Deep Learning and HMM for Segmentation of Retinal Blood Vessels in Fundus Images.

Accurate segregation of retinal blood vessels network plays a crucial role in clinical assessments, treatments, and rehabilitation process. Owing to the presence of acquisition and instrumentation anomalies, precise tracking of vessels network is challenging. For this, a new fundus image segmentation framework is proposed by combining deep neural networks, and hidden Markov model. It has three main modules: the Atrous spatial pyramid pooling-based encoder, the decoder, and hidden Markov model vessel tracker. The encoder utilized modified ResNet18 deep neural networks model for low-and-high-lev

Vascular cellular adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) expression in mice retinal vessels is affected by both hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation has been proposed to be important in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy. An early feature of inflammation is the release of cytokines leading to increased expression of endothelial activation markers such as vascular cellular adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1). Here we investigated the impact of diabetes and dyslipidemia on VCAM-1 expression in mouse retinal vessels, as well as the potential role of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Expression of VCAM-1 was examined by confocal immunofluorescence microscopy in vessels of wild type (wt), h

Retinal microvascular changes are related to indicators of glymphatic dysfunction and small vessel disease in frontotemporal dementia.

INTRODUCTION: Retinal vascular alterations have been associated with cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) in frontotemporal dementia (FTD), but their relationship with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-derived glymphatic-related diffusion markers remains unclear. We investigated retinal vascular fractal dimension (FD) in relation to SVD, glymphatic-related diffusion metrics, and clinical measures. METHODS: Thirty-four patients with clinically diagnosed FTD (82.4% behavioral variant FTD) and 34 cognitively unimpaired controls underwent color fundus photography and multimodal MRI. Serp-Mamba: Advancing High-Resolution Retinal Vessel Segmentation With Selective State-Space Model.

Ultra-Wide-Field Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy (UWF-SLO) images capture high-resolution views of the retina with typically spanning 200 degrees. Accurate segmentation of vessels in UWF-SLO images is essential for detecting and diagnosing fundus disease. Recent studies highlight that Mamba's selective State Space Model (SSM) excels in modeling long-range dependencies with linear computational complexity, making it highly suitable for preserving the continuity of elongated vessel structures, especially for high-resolution UWF images. Inspired by this, we propose the Serpentine Mamba (Serp-Mamba)
