Effects of Amisulpride Adjunctive Therapy on Working Memory and Brain Metabolism in the Frontal Cortex of Patients with Schizophrenia: A Preliminary Positron Emission Tomography/Computerized Tomography Investigation.

OBJECTIVE: Dopamine plays a significant role in working memory by acting as a key neuromodulator between brain networks. Additionally, treatment of patients with schizophrenia using amisulpride, a pure dopamine class 2/3 receptor antagonist, improves their clinical symptoms with fewer side effects. We hypothesized that patients with schizophrenia treated with amisulpride and aripiprazole show increased working memory and glucose metabolism compared with those treated with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and aripiprazole instead. METHODS: Sixteen patients with schizophrenia (eight in the am

EEG activity during the spatial span task in young men: Differences between short-term and working memory.

Short-term memory and working memory are two closely-related concepts that involve the prefrontal and parietal areas. These two types of memory have been evaluated by means of the spatial span task in its forward and backward conditions, respectively. To determine possible neurofunctional differences between them, this study recorded electroencephalographic activity (EEG) in the frontopolar (Fp1, Fp2), dorsolateral (F3, F4), and parietal (P3 and P4) areas during performance of the forward and backward conditions of this task in young men. The backward condition (an indicator of working memory)

Cingulo-opercular and frontoparietal control network connectivity and executive functioning in older adults.

Executive function is a cognitive domain that typically declines in non-pathological aging. Two cognitive control networks that are vulnerable to aging-the cingulo-opercular (CON) and fronto-parietal control (FPCN) networks-play a role in various aspects of executive functioning. However, it is unclear how communication within these networks at rest relates to executive function subcomponents in older adults. This study examines the associations between CON and FPCN connectivity and executive function performance in 274 older adults across working memory, inhibition, and set-shifting tasks. Av

Abnormal Neural Network of Primary Insomnia: Evidence from Spatial Working Memory Task fMRI.

BACKGROUND: Contemporary functional MRI (fMRI) methods can provide a wealth of information about the neural mechanisms associated with primary insomnia (PI), which centrally involve neural network circuits related to spatial working memory. METHODS: A total of 30 participants diagnosed with PI and without atypical brain anatomy were selected along with 30 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Subjects were administered the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression and clinical assessments of spatial working memory, followed by an MRI scan and fMRI in spat

Three-dimensional spinal motion and risk of low back injury during sheep shearing.

Sheep shearers are known to work in sustained flexed postures and have a high prevalence of low back pain (LBP). As sustained posture and spinal movement asymmetry under substantial loads are known risk factors for back injury our aim was to describe the 3D spinal movement of shearers while working. We hypothesised that thoraco-lumbar and lumbo-sacral movement would be tri-axial, asymmetric, and task specific. Sufficient retro-reflective markers were placed on the trunk of 12 shearers to define thoraco-lumbar and lumbo-sacral 3D motion during three tasks. Thoraco-lumbar movement consistently i

The influence of theta transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on working memory storage and processing functions.

The study aimed to explore the role of the fronto-parietal brain network in working memory function--in temporary storage and manipulation of information. In a single blind sham controlled experiment 36 respondents solved different working memory tasks after theta transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) was applied to left frontal, left parietal and right parietal areas. Both verum tACS protocols stimulating parietal brain areas (target electrodes positioned at location P3, or P4) had a positive effect on WM storage capacity as compared with sham tACS, whereas no such influence was

[Representations of informal jobs and health risks among housemaids and construction workers].

During the past few decades, the Brazilian labor market has been characterized by an increase of unregistered workers, earning lower wages, not covered by social insurance or occupational risk prevention programs. This study describes the representations and perceptions about informal work contracts and job-related health risks, analyzed in a group of injured unregistered workers. This was a qualitative study based on in-depth interviews carried out with seventeen laborers, nine housemaids and eight construction workers. The findings indicate that workers recognize the importance of formal job

Music, Math, and Working Memory: Magnetoencephalography Mapping of Brain Activation in Musicians.

Musical transposing is highly demanding of working memory, as it involves mentally converting notes from one musical key (i.e., pitch scale) to another key for singing or instrumental performance. Because musical transposing involves mental adjustment of notes up or down by a specific amount, it may share cognitive elements with arithmetical operations of addition and subtraction. We compared brain activity during high and low working memory load conditions of musical transposing versus math calculations in classically trained musicians. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) was sensitive to difference

Challenges to pre-migration interventions to prevent human trafficking: Results from a before-and-after learning assessment of training for prospective female migrants in Odisha, India.

BACKGROUND: Awareness-raising and pre-migration training are popular strategies to prevent human trafficking. Programmatic theories assume that when prospective migrants are equipped with information about risks, they will make more-informed choices, ultimately resulting in safe migration. In 2016, India was estimated to have 8 million people in modern slavery, including those who migrate internally for work. Work in Freedom (WiF) was a community-based trafficking prevention intervention. This study evaluated WiF's pre-migration knowledge-building activities for female migrants in Odisha to pr

Novel Right Ventricular Function Parameters can Identify Short-Term Nonresponders to Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair for Mitral Regurgitation.

Mitral regurgitation (MR) is a common valvular disease associated with poor prognosis. Percutaneous mitral valve repair (PMVR) combined with guideline-directed medical therapy has shown prognostic benefits, yet a substantial proportion of patients experience major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), including death and heart failure hospitalization, within the first year. Identifying short-term nonresponders remains a clinical priority. This study evaluated the prognostic value of advanced right ventricular (RV) function parameters in predicting MACE following PMVR using the MitraClip system

[Work rehabilitation in people with severe mental illnesses].

Work and employment are basic human rights. Work therapy has a long-standing tradition in mental health care. Integrating people with severe mental illness into jobs has always been considered indispensable. Germany has a good legal framework for work rehabilitation and there is solid evidence of effectiveness for a range of interventions. International models of work integration have not been implemented to a sufficient degree and this may be one of the reasons for limited success in work rehabilitation for people with mental illnesses. The need for work rehabilitation measures and the availa

Making it "work": mothers' perceptions of workplace breastfeeding and pumping at Dutch universities.

BACKGROUND: Dutch breastfeeding rates are below World Health Organization's recommendations and targets despite the benefits for individuals and society. Increasing the rates is complex due to multiple breastfeeding determinants, of which maternal education and employment are dominant. This study aimed to identify the perceptions and experiences of mothers employed at Dutch universities regarding barriers and enablers to workplace breastfeeding and pumping. METHODS: The study adopted a descriptive, qualitative research design. Thirteen semi-structured online interviews, underpinned by the Soc

Analysis of temperature on the surface of the wrist due to repetitive movements using sensory thermography.

UNLABELLED: This study examines changes in body temperature generated in the wrist area through sensory thermography technique because of highly repetitive movements, proving with this technique that there is a decreased ability to perform muscular work, and thereby assess possible pathologies of Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTDs). METHODS: Two healthy right-handed individuals, who performed repetitive work, emulating an operation of the textile industry for three days, generated DTA in the area of the wrist. The evaluation time was of 3 hours 30 minutes in a controlled temperature between 20

Water, sanitation and hygiene for homeless people.

This short communication provides insights into water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) for homeless people through a scoping study conducted in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It investigates homeless access to WASH through the lens of a rights-based approach. It demonstrates that homeless people's denial of their right to WASH reflects their marginal position in society and an unequal distribution of power and opportunities. The study ultimately suggests a rights-based approach to work toward dealing with the root causes of discrimination and marginalisation rather than just the symptoms. For the homeless,

Congenitally dysplastic inferior rectus muscle.

The authors report an unusual presentation of an idiopathic congenitally dysplastic inferior rectus muscle that responded well to surgical correction. Isolated unilateral enlargement of extraocular muscles is rare in children, and there is no definite logical explanation for its cause. A 20-month-old child presented with a congenitally enlarged posterior part of the right inferior rectus muscle with prominent hypotropia and enophthalmos since 10 months of age. Systemic disease work-up, ultrasound B-scan, computed tomography of the orbit and brain, and inferior rectus muscle biopsy were perform

Recurrent laryngeal nerve schwannoma: same setting of resection and injection laryngoplasty.

A 33-year-old woman was diagnosed with right recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) schwannoma. She presented with a long history of hoarseness, and only recently developed dysphagia. On physical examination, a mass was observed over the right cervical level IV. Endoscopic examination of the larynx showed that she had right unilateral vocal cord palsy. She successfully underwent transcervical resection of the tumour followed by injection laryngoplasty. This study discusses the presentation of the tumour, radiological findings, our working diagnosis and treatment options of RLN schwannoma.
