A Genome-Wide Scenario of Terpene Pathways in Self-pollinated Artemisia annua.

Scenarios of genes to metabolites in Artemisia annua remain uninvestigated. Here, we report the use of an integrated approach combining metabolomics, transcriptomics, and gene function analyses to characterize gene-to-terpene and terpene pathway scenarios in a self-pollinating variety of this species. Eighty-eight metabolites including 22 sesquiterpenes (e.g., artemisinin), 26 monoterpenes, two triterpenes, one diterpene and 38 other non-polar metabolites were identified from 14 tissues. These metabolites were differentially produced by leaves and flowers at lower to higher positions. Sequence

KindMap: an e-mental health tool to promote the well-being and mental health of people facing infertility-study protocol for a feasibility randomised control trial.

INTRODUCTION: Fertility patients increasingly use web-based and mobile-based apps to access psychosocial care. These digital tools may be a helpful alternative to traditional psychological interventions. Developing and evaluating patient-centred e-mental health tools rooted in evidence-based interventions is a priority. The KindMap is a stand-alone, cost-free e-mental health intervention derived from adapting the Mindfulness Based Programme for Infertility (MBPI) contents to a digital format. The KindMap integrates mindfulness and self-compassion skills training and Acceptance and Commitment T

A Similar Genetic Architecture Underlies the Convergent Evolution of the Selfing Syndrome in Capsella.

Whether, and to what extent, phenotypic evolution follows predictable genetic paths remains an important question in evolutionary biology. Convergent evolution of similar characters provides a unique opportunity to address this question. The transition to selfing and the associated changes in flower morphology are among the most prominent examples of repeated evolution in plants. In this study, we take advantage of the independent transitions to self-fertilization in the genus Capsella to compare the similarities between parallel modifications of floral traits and test for genetic and developm

From Storage to Survivorship: A Scoping Review of Young Adult Cancer Survivors' Experiences and Preferences in Reproductive Survivorship Care After Fertility Tissue Preservation.

Despite improved survival rates for childhood cancer, around 60% of survivors suffer lifelong health problems due to their treatment, including fertility issues which account for one third of these problems. Ovarian or testicular tissue cryopreservation can be offered to patients whose cancer treatment puts them at high risk of subsequent subfertility, but it presents unique challenges compared to standard methods of fertility preservation. We report the available information on the experiences of cancer survivors who preserved tissue for future fertility, to support the development of survivo

Clinical Applicability of Microbiota Sampling in a Subfertile Population: Urine versus Vagina.

The urogenital microbiota is increasingly gaining recognition as a significant contributor to reproductive health. Recent studies suggest that microbiota can serve as predictors for fertility treatment outcomes. Our objective was to investigate the degree of similarity in microbial composition between patient-collected urine and vaginal samples in a subfertile population. We enrolled women of reproductive age (20-44 years) diagnosed with subfertility and requiring in vitro fertilization (IVF) or IVF with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF-ICSI) treatment. They self-collected both mid-stream

Reproductive and Family Building Considerations for Female Patients with Anorectal And Urogenital Malformations.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about fertility and pregnancy outcomes in patients with anorectal malformations (ARM), particularly those with long common channel cloaca and cloacal exstrophy who may have impaired fertility. The purpose of this study is to describe pregnancy and offspring data from a cohort of patients with ARM. METHODS: A retrospective review of female patients with ARM from our database, which includes patients operated on since 1980, was performed as well as a review of the literature. Demographic, operative, and self-reported fertility, obstetric, and offspring data were coll

Complex biological pattern of fertility hormones in children and adolescents: a study of healthy children from the CALIPER cohort and establishment of pediatric reference intervals.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric endocrinopathies are commonly diagnosed and monitored by measuring hormones of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Because growth and development can markedly influence normal circulating concentrations of fertility hormones, accurate reference intervals established on the basis of a healthy, nonhospitalized pediatric population and that reflect age-, gender-, and pubertal stage-specific changes are essential for test result interpretation. METHODS: Healthy children and adolescents (n = 1234) were recruited from a multiethnic population as part of the CALIPER study.

Stage-specific regulation of undifferentiated spermatogonia by AKT1S1-mediated AKT-mTORC1 signaling during mouse spermatogenesis.

Undifferentiated spermatogonia are composed of a heterogeneous cell population including spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs). Molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of various spermatogonial cohorts during their self-renewal and differentiation are largely unclear. Here we show that AKT1S1, an AKT substrate and inhibitor of mTORC1, regulates the homeostasis of undifferentiated spermatogonia. Although deletion of Akt1s1 in mouse appears not grossly affecting steady-state spermatogenesis and male mice are fertile, the subset of differentiation-primed OCT4+ spermatogonia decreased significan

Summarizing the Experiences of Individuals Who Have Obesity or Larger Bodies Seeking Fertility Care: A Scoping Review.

Females who have larger bodies or obesity may be at an increased risk for experiencing infertility. Problematically, both weight or body size and infertility are stigmatized, harming quality of care. We conducted a scoping review to understand the lived experiences of patients who may be subjected to intersecting stigmas of weight and infertility in healthcare. Searches included six databases (Medline, Embase, CINAHL, PsycInfo, Scopus, and Proquest Theses and Dissertations). Data were narratively summarized. With a team of interest holders, including lived experience experts, we identified fut

Maternal fluoride exposure, fertility and birth outcomes: The MIREC cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Fluoride exposure >1.5 mg/L from water has been associated with adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes. Little is known, however, about the effect of fluoride at levels consistent with water fluoridation (i.e., 0.7 mg/L) on pregnancy and birth outcomes. We examined the relationship between maternal fluoride exposure, fertility, and birth outcomes in a Canadian pregnancy cohort living in areas where municipal drinking water fluoride concentrations ranged from 0.04 to 0.87 mg/L. METHODS: Using data from the Maternal-Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals (MIREC) study, we estimated

The unexpected mating system of the androdioecious barnacle Chelonibia testudinaria (Linnaeus 1758).

Androdioecy was first described by Darwin in his seminal work on barnacle diversity; he identified males and hermaphrodites in the same reproductive population. Today, we realize that many androdioecious plants and animals share astonishing similarities, particularly with regard to their evolutionary history and mating system. Notably, these species were ancestrally dioecious, and their mating system has the following characteristics: hermaphrodites self-fertilize frequently, males are more successful in large mating groups, and males have a mating advantage. A male mating advantage makes andr

Unconventional conceptions and HIV.

The condom is widely recommended as the principal method for preventing HIV transmission, but such advice obviously does not apply to women who are seeking to become pregnant. In this sense, 'safer sex' is incompatible with reproduction. Existing research into HIV transmission has examined the choices made by those wishing to conceive within a sexual relationship; such research shows that HIV is not a highly significant factor in their decision-making processes. This study aims to extend the debate by exploring the decision-making processes of women seeking to become pregnant with donated sper

Validity of self-reported data on pregnancies for childhood cancer survivors: a comparison with data from a nationwide population-based registry.

STUDY QUESTION: To what degree do records registered in the Netherlands Perinatal Registry (PRN) agree with self-report in a study questionnaire on pregnancy outcomes in childhood cancer survivors (CCSs)? SUMMARY ANSWER: This study suggests that self-reported pregnancy outcomes of CCSs agree well with registry data and that outcomes reported by CCSs agree better with registry data than do those of controls. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Many studies have shown that childhood cancer treatment may affect fertility outcomes in female CCSs; however, these conclusions were often based on questionnaire d

Effect of acupuncture pretreatment on clinical pregnancy rate in women with diminished ovarian reserve undergoing IVF-ET: study protocol for a multicenter randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) is known to reduce the likelihood of achieving pregnancy or live births in women undergoing in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET). Acupuncture maybe effective for DOR, but current evidence remains limited and inconclusive. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This study is a multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled trial conducted on a large scale. A total of 300 women with DOR preparing for IVF-ET will be randomized 1:1 to acupuncture or placebo acupuncture. Interventions will be administered from the second menstrual cycle preceding the IVF c

The mythological and archaeological perspectives on penectomy and orchiectomy: The case of Cybele and Attis.

Castration has been a significant theme in mythology, religious traditions, and historical practices, often symbolizing transformation, sacrifice, and divine punishment. While the term is frequently associated with orchiectomy (removal of the testes), this study argues that penectomy (removal of the penis) must also be considered, particularly in myths where the symbolic weight of castration extends beyond mere fertility loss. The myth of Cybele and Attis serves as a compelling example, raising questions about the intended nature of Attis' self-mutilation and its implications.

Experiences and actions taken by women to address delayed conception in Delhi, India: A qualitative study.

One in six people experiences infertility in their lifetime globally, including India. Understanding experiences and actions taken by people with delayed conception requires developing person-centred fertility care interventions. We applied the theory of planned behaviour to explore the experiences and actions of women in couples that failed to conceive in low to lower middle-income neighbourhoods of Delhi, India. This was a qualitative study among 35 women who had failed to conceive after 18 months. Data were collected between February and July 2021 through focus group discussions. Deductive

Connections between primary vaginismus and procreation: some observations from clinical practice.

So far, the literature on vaginismus has mainly been contemplative. Quantitative data are scarce, while fertility and obstetrical aspects are almost never considered. In this article, these two aspects are addressed. A cohort of patients received a questionnaire, developed to obtain information about possible connections between the vaginistic reaction, the patient's treatment goals and, if relevant, obstetrical characteristics. Our data reveal that the desire to have a child is not a negative predictor for treatment outcome in terms of consummation. In some instances, however, self-inseminati
