Smartphone Acoustic Sensing for Contactless Respiration Monitoring and Gesture-Based Authentication.

This paper presents a smartphone-based sonar-sensing system for contactless monitoring of respiration and gesture-based user activity, using a single commercial phone with no hardware modification. A 20 kHz audio signal is transmitted from the phone's speaker and reflections are captured by its microphone; motion-induced Doppler shifts are recovered using an envelope detection method that removes the need for a reference copy of the transmitted signal and improves robustness to transmitter frequency drift. Actuator experiments at a target distance around 50 cm demonstrated motion sensitivity a

Smartphone integrated portable oxidase-like hydrogel kit for UO22+ colorimetric analysis.

Uranyl ion (UO22+) pollution in marine environments poses a serious threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems. To overcome the dependence of traditional detection methods on large-scale instruments, a portable smartphone-integrated hydrogel kit was reported for on-site quantitative detection of UO22+ with nanozyme technology. Spindle-shaped FeOOH/MnO2 nanozymes with intrinsic oxidase-like activity were fabricated within an agarose hydrogel matrix in a 96-well plate. FeOOH/MnO2 catalyzes the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) without the need of unstable hydrogen peroxide (H2

Intraoperative Correction of Femoral Anteversion Using a Native Smartphone Measurement Tool.

Femoral de-rotation osteotomy is an established treatment option for femoral malrotation. Surgical correction of femoral malrotation often requires precise measurements using specialized equipment. Identification of a widely accessible intraoperative measurement tool that may be used in place of this specialized equipment may improve surgeons' accuracy with regard to achieving the desired degree of femoral rotation and therefore improve postoperative outcomes. In this case report, we highlight the use of a widely available smartphone application to measure and operatively correct femoral malro

Inclusive and Accurate Clinical Diagnostics Using Intelligent Computation and Smartphone Imaging.

Smartphone-based colorimetry has been widely applied in clinical analysis, although significant challenges remain in its practical implementation, including the need to consider biases introduced by the ambient imaging environment, which limit its potential within a clinical decision pathway. In addition, most commercial devices demonstrate variability introduced by manufacturer-to-manufacturer differences. Here, we undertake a systematic characterization of the potential imaging interferences that lead to this limited performance in conventional smartphones and, in doing so, provide a compreh

Patient-level performance evaluation of a smartphone-based malaria diagnostic application.

BACKGROUND: Microscopic examination is commonly used for malaria diagnosis in the field. However, the lack of well-trained microscopists in malaria-endemic areas impacted the most by the disease is a severe problem. Besides, the examination process is time-consuming and prone to human error. Automated diagnostic systems based on machine learning offer great potential to overcome these problems. This study aims to evaluate Malaria Screener, a smartphone-based application for malaria diagnosis. METHODS: A total of 190 patients were recruited at two sites in rural areas near Khartoum, Sudan.
