Effects of an intensive voice treatment on articulatory function and speech intelligibility in children with motor speech disorders: A phase one study.

Producing speech that is clear, audible, and intelligible to others is a challenge for many children with cerebral palsy (CP) and children with Down syndrome (DS). Previous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of using the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT LOUD®) to increase vocal loudness and improve speech intelligibility in individuals with dysarthria secondary to Parkinson's disease (PD), and some research suggests that it also may be effective for individuals with dysarthria secondary to other conditions, including CP and DS. Although LSVT LOUD targets healthy vocal loudness, the

Preliminary findings into speech inconsistency in dialectal Cypriot-Greek speaking children: A comparison between children with typical development and speech sound disorders.

Speech sound disorders (SSD) are highly prevalent in preschool-aged children, yet their identification remains challenging in linguistically diverse contexts where speech variability may reflect dialectal difference rather than disorder. The present study investigated whether token-to-token speech inconsistency differentiates dialectal Cypriot-Greek-speaking children with typical development (TD) from peers with SSD. Twenty preschoolers (mean age = 5;6) participated: 10 with TD and 10 with SSD. Speech inconsistency was assessed using the DO.KI.GLO Inconsistency Protocol, a Cypriot-Greek adapta

Self-Supervised App-Based Speech Training for Children With Speech Sound Disorder-A Single-Case Experimental Design Study.

BACKGROUND: For children with speech sound disorder (SSD), speech intervention often involves a considerable amount of home-training, to achieve high-enough training frequency to promote speech change. A digital speech-training app has been developed that could serve as a cost-effective means of providing accessible intervention to children with SSD. AIMS: To evaluate whether self-supervised home-training with the app Pop2TalkNordic can expedite more target-like speech for children with SSD and to explore children's experiences of using the app. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Four 4-6-year-old Swed

Understanding capacity for implementing new interventions: A qualitative study of speech and language therapy services for children with speech sound disorder.

BACKGROUND: Many speech sound disorder (SSD) interventions with a long-term evidence base are 'new' to clinical practice, and the role of services in supporting or constraining capacity for practice change is underexplored. Innovations from implementation science may offer solutions to this research-practice gap but have not previously been applied to SSD. AIM: To explain variation in speech and language therapy service capacity to implement new SSD interventions. METHODS & PROCEDURES: We conducted an intensive, case-based qualitative study with 42 speech and language therapists (SLTs) in th

How speech and language therapists and parents work together in the therapeutic process for children with speech sound disorder: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Speech sound disorders (SSDs) are broadly defined as difficulty producing speech sounds in childhood. Reported prevalence of SSD varies from 2.3% to 24.6%, depending on how SSD is defined and the included age range. SSDs that do not resolve before age 8 can have a lasting impact on a child's academic achievements. The intensity of intervention for SSD is important to ensure effectiveness. However, there is a gap between the evidence base for intensity and speech and language therapists' (SLTs) clinical practice. One way that SLTs try to bridge this gap is by working with parents. S

An exploratory study of an undefined acquired neuromotor speech disorder within the context of the four level framework for speech sensorimotor control.

In this study, the speech of a 28-year-old male with acquired brain injury and who presents with an undefined neuromotor speech disorder which cannot be categorised as either apraxia of speech or dysarthria, is described. Voice onset time, vowel duration, utterance duration and vowel formant analyses were done acoustically. A perceptual analysis and intelligibility rating were also executed. The subject was found to present with unique perceptual symptoms, intelligible speech, prolonged sound duration and distorted vowel quality. The results are interpreted within the context of the Four Level

Clinical Decision Support Using Speech Signal Analysis: Systematic Scoping Review of Neurological Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Digital biomarkers are increasingly used in clinical decision support for various health conditions. Speech features as digital biomarkers can offer insights into underlying physiological processes due to the complexity of speech production. This process involves respiration, phonation, articulation, and resonance, all of which rely on specific motor systems for the preparation and execution of speech. Deficits in any of these systems can cause changes in speech signal patterns. Increasing efforts are being made to develop speech-based clinical decision support systems. OBJECTIVE:

Atypical GNAO1 variants in severe childhood speech disorders: clinical, genetic, and molecular insights.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of severe childhood speech disorders, including childhood apraxia of speech (CAS), is currently understood as genetically heterogeneous, with over 40 distinct monogenic conditions reported to date. Among them, the p.Thr327Arg variant in GNAO1, encoding the major neuronal G protein Gαo, was identified in one patient diagnosed with CAS and intellectual disability (ID). This presentation is exceptionally rare, as GNAO1 mutations are commonly associated with epilepsy, hyperkinetic movement disorders, and global developmental delay, often accompanied by ID. METHODS: Here,

A Qualitative Analysis of Clinician Perspectives of Ultrasound Biofeedback for Speech Sound Disorders.

PURPOSE: Ultrasound biofeedback therapy (UBT) is a relatively new type of technology-assisted speech-language therapy and has shown promise in remediating speech sound disorders. However, there is a current lack of understanding of the barriers and benefits that may influence the usage behavior and clinical decision making for the implementation of UBT from a clinician perspective. In this qualitative study, we explore the perspectives of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who have used ultrasound biofeedback in programs of speech sound therapy using the unified theory of acceptance and use o

Peer attitudes towards adolescents with speech disorders due to cleft lip and palate.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Individuals with speech disorders are often judged more negatively than peers without speech disorders. A limited number of studies examined the attitudes of adolescents toward peers with speech disorders due to a cleft lip with or without a cleft of the palate (CL ± P). Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the attitudes of peers toward the speech of adolescents with CL ± P. METHOD: Seventy-eight typically developing adolescents (15-18 years, 26 boys, 52 girls) judged audio and audiovisual samples of two adolescents with CL ± P based on three attitud

Rehabilitation of speech disorders following glossectomy, based on ultrasound visual illustration and feedback.

Intraoral surgery for tongue cancer usually induces speech disorders that have a negative impact on communication and quality of life. Studies have documented the benefit of tongue ultrasound imaging as a visual articulatory feedback for speech rehabilitation. This study aims to assess specifically the complementary contribution of visual feedback to visual illustration (i.e. the display of ultrasound video of target language movements) for the speech rehabilitation of glossectomised patients. Two therapy conditions were used alternately for ten glossectomised French patients randomly divided

Application of a Motor Learning Treatment for Speech Sound Disorders in Small Groups.

Speech sound treatment in the public schools is often conducted in small groups, but there are minimal data on the efficacy of group treatment. This study evaluated the efficacy of a motor learning-based treatment (Concurrent Treatment) provided to elementary-school students in small groups. Concurrent Treatment incorporates the randomized sequencing of various practice tasks (e.g., words, sentences, or storytelling) and can result in rapid speech sound acquisition during individual treatment settings. Twenty-eight 6- to 9-year-old children participated in a randomized pretest-posttest control
