Machine Learning Analysis of Blood microRNA Data in Major Depression: A Case-Control Study for Biomarker Discovery.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of reliable biomarkers for major depressive disorder (MDD) in clinical practice. However, several studies have shown an association between alterations in microRNA levels and MDD, albeit none of them has taken advantage of machine learning (ML). METHOD: Supervised and unsupervised ML were applied to blood microRNA expression profiles from a MDD case-control dataset (n = 168) to distinguish between (1) case vs control status, (2) MDD severity levels defined based on the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale, and (3) antidepressant responders vs nonresponders. Integrated Biomarker-Volumetric Profiling Defines Neurodegenerative Subtypes and Predicts Neuroaxonal Injury in Multiple Sclerosis Based on Bayesian and Machine Learning Analyses.

Background: The clinical-radiological paradox in multiple sclerosis (MS) underscores the need for biomarkers that better reflect neurodegenerative pathology. Serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) is a dynamic marker of neuroaxonal injury, while brain volumetry provides structural assessment of disease impact. However, the precise link between sNfL and regional atrophy patterns, as well as their combined utility for patient stratification and prediction, remains underexplored. Objective: This study aimed to establish a multimodal biomarker framework by integrating sNfL with comprehensive volum

Correlations between biological markers of the perirenal adipose tissue and clinical features of patients with localized kidney cancer.

Among the different types of cells that surround renal epithelial cells, human renal adipose tissue (hAT) is one of the most abundant. We have previously characterized the expression of different proteins in hAT (adiponectin, adiponectin receptor 1, leptin, leptin receptor, perilipin 1, and metalloprotease (1). In this study, we evaluated if the differential proteins expression as a whole was sufficient to separate healthy patients from patients with kidney cancer, using unsupervised machine learning algorithms; and the correlation between adiponectin and leptin expression with clinical charac

Understanding Mental Health Issues in Different Subdomains of Social Networking Services: Computational Analysis of Text-Based Reddit Posts.

BACKGROUND: Users increasingly use social networking services (SNSs) to share their feelings and emotions. For those with mental disorders, SNSs can also be used to seek advice on mental health issues. One available SNS is Reddit, in which users can freely discuss such matters on relevant health diagnostic subreddits. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we analyzed the distinctive linguistic characteristics in users' posts on specific mental disorder subreddits (depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, schizophrenia, autism, and mental health) and further validated their

Comparative evaluation of supervised and unsupervised deep learning strategies for denoising hyperpolarized 129Xe lung MRI.

PURPOSE: Reduced signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in hyperpolarized 129Xe MR images can affect accurate quantification for research and diagnostic evaluations. Thus, this study explores the application of supervised deep learning (DL) denoising, traditional (Trad) and Noise2Noise (N2N) and unsupervised Noise2void (N2V) approaches for 129Xe MR imaging. METHODS: The DL denoising frameworks were trained and tested on 952 129Xe MRI data sets (421 ventilation, 125 diffusion-weighted, and 406 gas-exchange acquisitions) from healthy subjects and participants with cardiopulmonary conditions and compared w

Breath-hold CBCT-to-CT synthesis using an unsupervised artifact disentanglement network with Mamba for breast cancer adaptive radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Accurate and up-to-date anatomical information is critical for effective treatment planning in breast cancer adaptive radiotherapy. Cone-beam computed tomography facilitates real-time plan optimization but lacks sufficient electron density accuracy for direct clinical application. To address this limitation, we propose a novel unsupervised deep learning framework that integrates the Mamba architecture with an artifact disentanglement network to form the Artifact Disentanglement Network-Mamba model. METHODS: This study proposes an unsupervised deep learning framework, ADN-Mamba, in

Image quality improvement of liver ultrasound using unsupervised deep learning.

Chronic liver disease (CLD) and subsequent liver cirrhosis (LC) are common causes of death and healthcare-related socio-economical costs worldwide. Ultrasound (US) is the first-line imaging modality for assessing the liver and associated hepatocellular carcinomas. Poor quality liver US images caused by aging or inadequate management of US equipment, can pose significant challenges in both diagnosis and treatment. From this perspective, the aim of this study was to enhance and assess the image quality of liver US obtained from an older, lower-performing device using a deep learning approach. A

Feature discretization-based deep clustering for thyroid ultrasound image feature extraction.

Ultrasound imaging technology has the advantage of being convenient, less harmful and widely applied, making ultrasonography one of the most popular methods for disease diagnosis. With the rapid development of Computer- Aided Diagnosis (CAD) technology, the use of neural networks to analyze ultrasound images has become a popular method to improve the diagnostic efficiency of ultrasonography. Since the high cost of labeling medical images makes it difficult to train neural networks based on supervised learning, unsupervised CAD techniques without labeling have become a research trend. Fusion of Supervised Feature Selection and Unsupervised Clustering for Multinuclei Classification of MER Signals in DBS for Parkinson's Disease.

In deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery for Parkinson's disease (PD), the accurate intraoperative identification of key nuclei-such as the subthalamic nucleus (STN)-is critical to ensuring therapeutic efficacy. However, current approaches heavily depend on expert annotations, and classification tasks are typically confined to binary distinctions between STN and non-STN regions. This limitation hampers the real-time recognition of complex and diverse neuroanatomical structures during PD-related DBS procedures. To overcome this challenge, we propose a three-class classification strategy for micr
